Title: Colorado Springs - Ongoing Meetups and Adventures
Post by: jordanread on September 20, 2014, 05:41:46 PM
Hey all. So I know there are at least a few of us here in Colorado Springs, so I thought I'd leave this here to see if anyone was specifically interested in doing a semi-regular meetup? I figure we can do a tour of parks with grills, or whatever. I also know that there are some people who are relatively close (and a bit south), who want to meet up as well. Any thoughts, ideas, etc?

Just post here if you are in the area. Also, if you are just visiting and would like to arrange something, feel free to PM me. I'm always down to meet Mustachians, even if it's not a full on meetup.

Im in Co Springs now.  Moved here in August and have been loving the change.  I'd be interested in semi regular meetups.  New to the area so dont have much in the way of suggestions but the parks and grills idea sounds good to me.

Happy to have you!! I'm glad you resurrected this thread. Let's see who else is interested.

I'm not in Colorado Springs yet but thinking about moving there...it made it to my top 4 places. I plan on taking a 14 State tour looking for a new place to live. I should be in the area around the end of Feb/early Mar, it would be cool to meet up with some of you to pick your brains on the area. If you have any pros/cons about the area feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Hey DollarBill--just curious about the other towns that made your top 4.  I saw that Flagstaff made it.  Also, what are your criteria?  If, during your multistate tour, you come through SW Colorado, feel free to PM me and I will show you around.  If you are into hiking, skiing (downhill, backcountry, cross country, skate skiing), river stuff, mountaineering, you should check out my town.  Good luck with your search!

I just made this post about it. I didn't mention my top 4 because I wanted to see what people said. So far it's Austin, Tucson, Las Vegas, Colorado Springs...that's just the short list.

I know...don't know if it's been done before. But I'm sure it's each their own and with different circumstances.

Been living in the Springs for the last year and I will be here for at least one more year. I didn't even realize this thread existed or I would have spoke up sooner.

Well, the good news is that I just recently acquired a Pit Barrel Cooker, which so far has made some out of this world whole chickens, ribs, burgers, smoke veggies, and the like. I live pretty close to Memorial Park (https://goo.gl/maps/fHL9vXZsw5M2), and could potentially take it over there. Only 'problem' is that it's a smoker, so everything is pretty low and slow (like 4-5 hours for ribs and the like). That would be a hell of a hangout. I've got a slackline as well, and I've attached it to some trees on the North side of the lake (I am very not good at that). I also know they have first come first serve pergolas too. Any thoughts?

Count me in for a meetup. I'm "free" most afternoons/evenings and almost every weekend.

So is that a total of 6 people already? 94, are you actually here in COS, or will that require a bit of travel?

Thanks for thinking of me, Jordan, but no, I'm way over in SW CO.

I'll actually be making a work trip to Denver in a few weeks, but will have no time to take a side trip.  :(

Thanks again.

Damn. I thought it was something like that. Next time I wind up in Durango/Pagosa Springs (there is an awesome hike => camping => natural hot springs we love), or that general direction, I'll hit you up.

For everyone else, how about Memorial Park on 10/1? I'll bring a slackline, and if it gets too crazy, we can head back to my place a couple of blocks away.

So tentative meetup date of 10/1. Who can make it?

Good start, and even if it's only one person, it should still be fun. Since I already have the Frugal FIRE calendar shared, I added it to there. No specific time as of yet, but feel free to RSVP to that event.

I haven't met any yet!  Not even sure the people here really exist!  :)

I've made plans to go to Chicago next month to meet several of them.  I'm sure hoping they are real, or else I will have a huge airbnb place to myself for 3 days!

Absolutely. We're going to be at the park. If we have enough people, I'll grab one of the pavilions, which are super close to one of the playgrounds.

Title: Re: Colorado Springs - Bi-Monthly BBQ?

Just made the following post in the specific 10/1 Meetup thread. Link here (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/1012016-colorado-springs-co/). That is primarily where I will be updating things as we get closer. I am going to leave this thread more general for a possible recurring thing, so feel free to pop over there. Since I planned ahead, but not that far ahead, I'll update in here too. I attached the picture of the general area I'm planning.

All right. I went over to the park and scoped out some spots last night. I don't know how many people we've got coming, so I won't head over super early and grab the pavilion. But there is a plethora of picnic tables over there. I was also going to wait to see the response before I made any other plans, but screw it. I've got a pork shoulder that is 2 hours away from being put on the smoker. I will pull it, and bring it over. I don't do BBQ sauce, so feel free to bring that, or bread for sandwiches, or veggies, or fruit, or whatever. It's not required by any means, and you are all welcome to hangout, eat the food, whatever. The pork will be smoked over mesquite, with an adobo/allepo rub. More savory than spicy, and I've had no issues with anyone thinking it's too hot.

I'm going to be over there between 12:30 and 1:00 (I'm shooting for 12:30), and we'll just hang out until we get bored or have elsewhere to be. I'll be wearing a headwrap of some kind and a Hawaiian shirt, but the easiest way to spot me will be by looking for the slackline (or some guy trying to setup the slackline). It's a red line, and it will be pretty close to the playground on the SW side of the park. I've attached a picture outlining the general area I'm planning. There is parking all along that section. If it's too crowded, we can always move, and I'll update this post if we decide to take a jaunt. South of the boathouse, North of the big playground. I know some people were thinking about bringing their kids, so I will do my best to make sure that the if they run to the playground, they can still be supervised.

See you all tomorrow. It's going to be fun!!

Thanks!

Yes, I live in Kansas City but I'd love to visit Colorado Springs again. I was just there a few months ago and loved it. Maybe since you all are meeting regularly, I could look you all up the next time I come through.

Don't sweat it economista. This thread is for ongoing adventures here in COS. Sucks that you missed the last one, but just keep an eye on this thread for the next one. I'm not 100% certain what it will be, especially if winter actually decides to come this year. Shoot, we're almost getting close enough that we could a New Years bash or something. :)

So I just got back from a little walk around pulpit Rock. I'm very seriously considering making 2017 the year for park picnics. Every couple of months, meet at some new park, have a picnic, maybe a bike ride or hike before it after. It's not like we don't have options here. What do you all think? We don't even need to wait until it gets warm, if we decided sledding would be fun (and we get real snow).

Let me know what you all think about this, suggestions for places, etc. My goal is to have at least a 3 week advance notice.

Count me in. I'm on the north side, so places like Palmer Park are easier for me but I've ridden down to Acacia, Monument Valley, and Bear Creek parks as well (it's the ride back up that gets you!)

I love to bike and hike. It's supposed to be nice Saturday so I was thinking of checking out Pulpit Rock; I haven't been there before.

I so wish we had weather forecasts that go out a month. I have no idea what the weather is going to be like in January. Are you out all of February?

Oh yeah. I've always worked North of my house. I get the uphill stuff out of the way early. :) How'd you like Pulpit Rock? It's a fun little place. The better half and I were going to hit up Section 16, but wound up going to a trampoline place by the house. Holy crap I was sore the next day.

I have plenty of wood, especially considering I just ripped up a floor. Just in case it's snowy, does anybody know a park or somewhere with a fire pit? A bonfire would be nice if it's all cold and stuff.
Anyone have any favorite parks? I think I've hit most of them, but I pretty much get surprised every year with the awesomeness here.

Okay, this doesn't need to necessarily be outdoors, or Paris, or whatever, but how many of you are interested in a mid-january meetup, and what kind of activity would you like. It will definitely be on a weekend, but other than that, I just want to get a feel for who's down.

Sundays seem to be my most available day, though january is going to be a busy, busy month for me. I deliver pizzas, so more than likely if I'm free, it'll be morning/afternoon, and not dinner/evening. Midweek, I'm more often working during the day and free-er in the evenings. Otherwise, I'm down.

If I had a house, I'd say we should do a board-games/potluck thing, but alas, we're currently in a fairly small apartment.

Long-time reader, but rarely post! My husband and I would love to meet up sometime for a game night and pot luck. We are free from Wednesday - Sunday nights, but we do have a 9 year old with us half the time (depending on co-parenting schedule). We live near Southgate.

I can't host that many people at my house, so I'm probably going to wind up doing the park thing in March. If someone else wants to host, I'm down to show up, though. Pot luck with food does sound fun though. If someone wants to set it up, just make a new thread with the date, and post a link to it here.

Welcome to Colorado!  I'm over in the SW corner of the state, but I get up to the Denver area once or twice per year, mostly on work trips.

If you ever get over to my part of the state, be sure to let me know!

Glad a few of you had fun at the potluck and board games. Next one will probably be another Memorial Park meetup on a weekend in March. No idea what the weather is like, but that doesn't really matter, does it? We can sled if it's snowy, or slackline if it's not.

Which weekend works best for everyone?

All right, I'm thinking of the weekend of 3/18 or 3/19 somewhere at Palmer Park (https://www.google.com/maps/@38.8771882,-104.7710369,15.43z). I am not in a position to do a potluck or anything like that currently, but I'm down for a hike, or anything else. I've been there twice in the last few weeks, and I know the playground gets busy. I was thinking of something more towards the middle. I know there is a gazebo here (https://goo.gl/maps/ketQjhiffG72), and while there are signs that say it needs to be reserved, I've never seen people there (if we choose this, I'll probably go back, and see about actually reserving it...if all else fails, we could just leave if someone showed up too). What think you all? Good date? Good location?

If so, I'll start another thread for this meetup specifically.

Jordan, what time were you thinking for the park this weekend?

It's going to be 3/19 at 1pm. So not this weekend, but next. I'll make another thread right quick, and post it here.

2nd ongoing meetup was a success. Thank you to all of you who showed up. It was fun, and I think I've got some good ideas as for the next one.

I was thinking though, I am most definitely going to be doing the Starlight Spectacular this year, and I usually create a 'team', so I'll post the link once we can sign up for it. There will be something else before then for sure though.

For those who didn't get to talk about future meetups in person, what kind of things would you be interested in doing?

We've done a park picnic (we had a slackline, but none of us used it), and we've done a meandering hike. Some thoughts are bike rides, meeting up at a brewery, some multi-day backpacking adventures, etc. We live in the awesome place where a majority of the land is a big free playground. What think you?

There will most likely be another meetup before the starlight, but tickets are available now, so I made a thread for the ride. Starlight Spectacular meetup is here (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/colorado-springs-starlight-spectacular-bike-ride-6172017/).

My parents live in the Springs. I visit a few times per year. I'll be sure to follow this thread for future meets.

Since it was at the last Palmer Park meetup in which I was introduced to this, I wanted to x-post here.

Quote from: jordanread
So the hike. I learned about this place at the last Mustachian Meetup I organized. I had no idea this place even existed. It was interesting to say the least. Let's take a look at the altimeter info.

Now, looking at this insanity, one could easily think that this was some Type II fun. Or maybe, since that has been discussed lately, atonement for the sins of dinner on Friday*.

And oh boy were there sins. As an appetizer, Spam Musubi made an appearance:

There were four of them, but they were so tasty, two got eaten before I even thought to appreciate the beauty of them. For the main course, MXT had a roasted chicken sandwich with a pineapple habanero sauce (that was more like a chutney). I didn't get a photo, but I did get a bite. It was a touch sweet for my tastes, but the chicken was good. I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I got a combo plate with two entrees. Introducing Loco Moco and Kalua Pig with Cabbage.

There are two beef patties under those fried eggs, covered with gravy that was delicious (not too salty, which was impressive).

So yeah, sins to atone for, and with the profile you saw above, it is completely realistic that this hike was specifically to make up for the gorging that we did on Friday. But the altitude profile only tells part of the story. Yeah, it was steep as hell, and yes the trail was rough, and yes we really haven't done any serious hikes lately. But if you were to just look at that altitude profile, seems painful, but you'd miss some of the stuff you see.

Like how you start going up and up, and on occasion, can see the city get further

below you. As you constantly start checking to see how far you've gone, and are constantly disappointed by the mere mileage, you continue to look up towards the peak. And then, after a couple of hours of brutal uphill, you finally come to the saddle. To one side, green and city, to the other...

As the evening drew near, and the shadows lengthen, the relatively recently engulfed mountain side became a strange mix of hope for the future as new life can be established, and sorrow for the damage caused by humanity.

All in all, it was glorious.

*I'm merely being facetious here. TBH, I hate when people workout losing sight of the fact that for something to be sustainable, it needs to be fun. Considering that fitness is kind of a big thing with me, even typing that out kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but I know it's a humorous way that a lot of people say things, without any of the baggage that I have.

Also, I'm attempting to work out a less transient meetup before the Starlight Spectacular (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/colorado-springs-starlight-spectacular-bike-ride-6172017/). I've had lots of fun meeting at parks and the like, but damn if it wouldn't be nice to just relax, BBQ some food, play games, or chat (with a bathroom nearby). I'm working on the better half to allow this at our place, and if that's the case, I'm thinking an awesome potluck in which I smoke some ribs, a turkey, and some pork shoulder. Just a thought that occurred to me this morning as I found myself involved in a few simultaneous discussions about BBQ, roasting, and hosting.

How many people are down for something like that? More of a "make an evening out of it" kind of thing?

Oh man. That is coming up quick. Regardless, we'll get something setup before you all head out. Weekend of the 3rd or 10th super busy for you, or is it doable?

Nice. New people! This may be an opportunity to try some things I haven't quite figured out how to implement in our meetups yet.

Ah cool. If it becomes a let's make an evening thing, I'm thinking Saturday, but if it winds up being an afternoon thing, Saturday or Sunday would work.

All right! June 3rd it is. Sorry all, for the short notice. Also, it's going to most likely be a potluck at my house (near memorial Park), and I'll bust out the smoker for some kind of meat. Details will be in a separate thread tomorrow.

Hey all, a new guy on the forums just joined in. I know it's been rainy a lot recently, but I'm thinking another Saturday over at Memorial Park. For me, it won't be until after 10/9, and I got to CMC two weekends from then.

How does everyone's schedule look? Preferences? Do we want to do something at my house again maybe?

I just moved to CS and would like to meet the local mustachians.  I'm job-free on 1 October so pretty much have an open schedule 😁.  I'd be down for either a park setup or otherwise.  Thanks for being the CS voice on here Jordan!

Hey all. I'm doing food and board games at my house on saturday 12/16. This isn't a mustachian-only thing, but I figure the more the merrier! I'm going to have dinner for anyone who wants it, and feel free to bring a favourite board game (I have Taboo, Dominion, Apples to Apples, and Oodles). I'm planning a start time of 4:30pm for dinner. Y'all are welcome to come a bit earlier if you want, or if you can't make it 'til later, that's cool too.

You can PM me for the address.

I'll PM you. Not sure if the better half is down or not, but I'll ask her. Also, thanks for posting. I need to get one more BBQ before the end of the year. Not sure about slacklining at the park (I still suck) due to the weather, but it could be cool.

I'm looking for a venue for a Camp Mustache Colorado event.

Does anyone know of a place with lodging (beds) that provides food as well?

Typically summer camps/church camps are good venues for this type of event.

PM me if you have any suggestions for venues!

Hello fellow Springs folks,

My wife and I are in our mid-thirties, have a two-and-a-half year old, and are looking for some like-minded friends to connect with. We enjoy hiking, biking, climbing, board games, or just tossing around a Frisbee. Please feel free to contact us, if you'd like to meet-up.

Yay! I would love to meet up! I host a food and board game night at my house every saturday 4:30-8:30. My kids are 7 and 8, so definitely bring your little one! I'm in the UCCS neighbourhood. I usually make taco/burrito fixings, so pretty chill.

Also up for a hike if we can coordinate schedules!
