Title: Chicago meetup
Post by: roadtripper on February 25, 2015, 11:27:32 AM
I saw interest in a Chicago meetup on an old thread, but don't know if anything ever got off the ground. I'd be interested in meeting other Mustachians in the city. A friend in Omaha meets regularly with a MMM group at locations that rotate among different parts of town. It'd be great to get something like that going here.

Give a holler and let's try to get something on the calendar. Maybe (definitely) at a place with cheap eats and/or drinks?

About 40% to FI and always interested to talk strategy or support newcomers. Tried once or twice before to no avail. A strong organizing presence for this is what is needed (not my strong suit).

Okay, then let's get this rolling a little more. What are everyone's general availability and location preferences?

Monday and Thursday evenings work best for me.

Live on the North Side and work in the Loop. I'd prefer to meet anywhere near the Red Line, though I'd be happy to deviate from that. (In other words, it would not change my participation if we didn't meet near the Red Line.) My friend and her Omaha MMM group meet at a dive bar that serves food. We could try exploring everyone's favorite Chicago neighborhood dives. Any other suggestions?

Yep I'm also in.  I say start with something on the North Side and I heard mention of a Thursday so how about March 26th, Thursday.  Any objections?  Anyone have a place that they are thinking of?  Just throw out a few ideas, happy to organize a little for the group.

It is too early in the year for the March/April 26 meetups Even Steven and Mr. 1500 are talking about, but I propose establishing something around the Navy Pier Fireworks. Free fireworks and music coming off the yacht clubs on a summer night is easily my favorite Mustachian entertainment.
Title: Re: Chicago meetup
Post by: Philbert on March 13, 2015, 06:27:49 AM
I'm totally down for something in March or April (or May). I think a bar may be preferable to Navy Pier fireworks because it's more of a chance to talk to each other. There was a Chicago meetup last year. You can always search the thread and reach out to people there, too. I remember from that meetup, there were people who traveled from the suburbs. Something to keep in mind. I live in the city, so I'm up for whatever. Keep me posted!

A meetup would be great! I'm also a fan of a central location like around the loop or along the red line.

I'm especially a fan of taking advantage of the multitude of free outdoor events in Chicago, which I would think appeals to the readership here. Of course, this is when the weather improves (soon/now!). Some ideas: Millennium Park free music (especially weekday / less crowded ones), Navy Pier fireworks (viewed from almost anywhere such as museum campus or Lincoln Park lakefront), festival like Jazz/Blues/Celtic, or a community garden of some sort.

Indoors, the Chicago Cultural Center has free open meeting areas but isn't open very late on weekdays (7pm). Could still be a meeting point.

I'm still open, of course, to a delicious happy hour.

Mike

Sorry, the thread got away from me. For whatever reason, I stopped receiving the notifications and quit checking this particular forum -- until today.

March 26 won't work for me -- one of the few Thursdays when I have plans. But please feel free to proceed without me. I could always join a future meeting.

I'm happy to meet at a bar or free cultural event. A concert or fireworks might not be the best for conversations, but I'm willing to give it a try. The website smalltabs.com is a good place to check daily bar specials. The ones near DePaul would be located near the Red/Brown lines, but I haven't been to any and don't know if any would be mellow.

Gaaah I don't want to see this thread languish. Let's make this meetup happen!

***I propose Thursday, April 30th at Kelly's Pub.***

Kelly's Pub
949 W Webster Ave
Chicago, IL 60614

Mr1500 will be in town that week, and roadtripper is available Mon and Thurs. I figure Thursday is a better meetup night than Monday. (Well, for those of us still working, anyway.) That being said, if Monday is better for everyone, then Monday it is.

Kelly's Pub is two blocks south of the Fullerton el stop, so it's convenient. Plus it seems like a lowkey place to talk -- with an outdoor beer garden allegedly! I don't know how crowded it gets, especially if it's a nice evening, but we can take our chances. On Thursdays, they have $3 beer, so cheap drinks. http://www.kellyspub.com/index.html

April 30th seems far away, but it'll sneak up on us quicker than you think. It will give people some time to find the thread and consider going. I'm flexible, though, so this date doesn't have to be set in stone.

Let's do it!

Sorry, I'm out for 4/30. Heading to Omaha that day for the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting. I'm not a shareholder, but know someone who can get me in -- and I'd like to check out this event at least once in my life.

I'll keep an eye on the thread for future meetups. I'd definitely like to meet Chicago locals who post to these boards.

I'm a bad Mustache. I had no idea the BRK meeting was that weekend. And I'm currently reading Tap Dancing to Work. Double oof!

Roadtripper & Reepekg - at the next Chicago meetup, you'll have to give us the full scoop on the meeting.

Although I'm sure the BRK meeting will be entertaining, I take Warren's advice and just buy VTI. We'll have to get the details from Roadtripper as my 1/2 miles flights are to a friend's wedding.

I saw the Marquee option for my message and started laughing, your comment made it even better, thanks.

Identify mustachians.......good question.  I can now spot Mr. 1500 days out in a crowd, and I look like this guy in the attachment.  So I will be wearing sunglasses, have no hair, dressed in a suit with dollar bills coming out from my pockets, also I will be giving the thumbs up to everyone who even looks in my direction.

Was great to meet and see everyone! Thanks for kicking us off here, roadtripper.

Steven, nice summary. You found an awesome comparison pic of Pitbull!

I'm also a big fan of the zoo! They close pretty early for meeting after work (5pm), so maybe a weekend morning with mugs of coffee would work well. Conducive to a bike ride!

I forgot to mention in person -- if anyone needs a hand with learning to tune their bike to get riding again, I'm happy to help and have all the needed tools.

Title: Re: Chicago meetup
Post by: metastache on May 21, 2015, 02:49:58 PM
Great! That makes at least four. The suggestion for free fun places is a good one; seems that a weekend day might make the most sense in that case.

Here is a list of free places (please add to it!)
-Lincoln Park Zoo
-Botanical Gardens
-Garfield Park Conservatory
-Chicago Cultural Center
-Maggie Daley Park

Which weekend day works best for folks? I'm partial to the 14th or the 28th. And getting at least eight people to commit probably makes sense, so keep it coming...)
Title: Re: Chicago meetup
Post by: SticktothePlan on May 21, 2015, 09:37:35 PM
Given Chicago's unpredictable weather.  I vote for later in June.  June 28th is a Sunday.  Lincoln Park Zoo is fine.

Other free places =
Oak St Beach
Millennium Park
Grant Park (Buckingham Fountain)
Oz Park
31st St Beach
Montrose Beach
Ohio St Beach/Jane Adams Park
UIC Campus
Lake Shore Park (Near Northwestern)
Mary Bartelme Park
Museum Campus (outside of the field Museum)
Some of the Libraries have indoor meeting rooms for community groups (I think this counts) that can be reserved
South Garden (Art Institute)

Ha I just quit my job at the zoo last week! Not to retire...but for a better job. Weird timing. Anyway, I'm up for meeting wherever. All the dates mentioned work for me.

Just a heads up - @evensteven there are no polar bears there now! The habitat is under construction. But there is a brand new monkey habitat which is pretty cool.

I should be able to make it. Hopefully we have better weather than we did this past weekend.

Just a heads up: June 28th is the date of the pride parade in Lakeview. It shouldn't effect us down at the zoo, but the el & buses might be extra crowded that day, especially in the morning. (parade starts at noon) Could we do mid-afternoon?

@moelac - congrats on the new job!

Hi everyone, recently converted Mustachian here! I am definitely interested in meeting up with other Chicago folks and collaborating. I actually made today a meetup.com group around MMM's ideas: http://www.meetup.com/Financial-Freedom-through-Frugal-Living-Chicago/ (http://www.meetup.com/Financial-Freedom-through-Frugal-Living-Chicago/) is the group. Would we like to coordinate a meetup through there? It may be easier to plan on a set date and location there.

If you feel inclined to meet up or check out the page, please join! If not, I will be checking back here regularly to see when a date and location get decided on to meet up. See some of you soon hopefully :)

Hello Chicago!!

I see lots of journals from the Chicago area.  (Apparently us Mustachians are hard to get together.)  I am going to propose the following meetup date/time because I KNOW I am going to be in downtown Chicago that day and would be able to meet up in this area that evening. Wouldn't it be nice to have a network of mustachians to get together with?  I am in the suburbs, but I know many are concentrated in Chicago proper.

Here is the date and location (unless the bar goes under before May - I'll check again a couple weeks in advance to be sure).

May 17, 2015. Tuesday - 5:30pm-7:30pm. The Option Room - 401 S. La Salle Street, Lobby 3, Chicago IL

I have never been to this bar. (Frankly I don't usually go out to bars since I'm frugal and live in the suburbs.)  However I'd love to meet some mustachians, this bar is close to where I'll be that day and also close to a metro stop.  They have beer on tap and have done Groupons in the past.   It's one night, and from there we could plan affordable picnics or other activities.

Is anyone in?  SAVE THE DATE!! :-)

I am in. But I am baffled at the venue, surely there are free outdoor eventts in Chicago during the summer time. For example, we can bring picnic food and meet up on the deck of the botanical garden at Navy Pier.  My first year in Chicago, so call me clueless.

Yay! Looking forward to meeting you chesebert! I am not from Chicago proper...and venue is because a) I will be there that day, b) it is close to public transport, c) it is relatively close to where I will be during the day, d) I wanted to throw something out there as we have never gotten a meeting formalized and e) you never know the weather in Chicago 5 months in advance.

I didn't know there was an indoor garden in Navy Pier - maybe we can do that another time! :-)

Hi all, I would definitely join the May meetup. We should start some sort of formal meet up group and have everyone's email as a list so we can share thoughts, support each other etc.

Let's face it, it's very difficult to be or find a Mustashian. I have a crushingly bad story to share: my family net worth is approaching retireable level, but my spouse is into BMW SUV and other luxuries. With those things, it never ends and will become an ever increasing money drain. I am mulling over divorce but there is so much pain associated with that....

I am happy to start a Chicago Chapter of the meet up if there is enough response. We may do regular meet up, such as once a month or some reasonable schedule. Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi Terry! I think that's a great idea.

My wife and I no longer live in the Chicago area, but still make trips there every couple months or so to visit family. So we're unavailable for monthly get-togethers, but if we're in town we'd love to join a meetup!

Very sorry to hear about your tough situation. I really hope you can find the support you need here or elsewhere.

Yes, we're on for our two dates! (I was out of the country in China for the past week - I will post a pic of my kid's MMM China T shirt which I will bring to the meetup and put up at our May meeting to help people find our group.)

I don't want to change the time/venue for the two currently scheduled events since they've been posted out there for awhile, and I'm actually a suburbs gal - not a city gal.  I think any venue change would be confusing to people who've already put it on their calendars. Please feel free host/add new dates/venues for other meetings.

We've got two scheduled dates/times so far....

Terry - I got your PM, and am just now reading your actual post.  So sorry for your crushingly bad story - my DH is also not MMM at all, but I love him and if he wants to keep working to support his lifestyle, I'm all for it.  (My retirement number is significantly lower than his.) Divorce can actually be a very expensive option in IL, depending on the length of your marriage....A new formula for spousal support was set in 2014.

I'll join the Chicago Chapter too! Thanks for finding it, and I look forward to meeting everyone in person.

Boo, I'll be at a conference in CA on the May 15th. Not sure about any August plans yet.

We take the cat to street fairs almost every weekend during festival season--we volunteer for Tree House, but also go for fun when we're not volunteering. So if you go to a fair and see a couple walking a black cat, that's us.

I love this! I usually vend at Glenwood Ave. and am planning to do so again this year, should the organizers ever cough up the application forms. So if you're at that I will keep an eye out for the walking cat. :)

(One of my former cats came from Tree House! And I fostered a kitty for them once; unfortunately he turned out to be Bitey McBiterson so it was not a great experience for us. I hear he did find a forever home after he went to the adoption floor, though.)

I think I caught the names of most people I spoke to except maybe Matt (???) who used to buy old Mercedes. I'd love to keep in touch with you all!

Will brainstorm some additional locations given the nice upcoming weather, such as the Cultural Center, LP Zoo, or Millennium Park free concerts. And that bar was a pretty ideal space!

You are better with names/faces than I am, and it will take a few meetings before all of them connect.  I really had a great time hanging out.  I probably introduced myself several times to each of you! :-)

That would be awesome if you could brainstorm some locations - how about in the June 20-27 time frame?  Since we have an 8/13 meetup scheduled that could make it about every 6 weeks and not run into 4th of July. Anyone feel free to just name the time/place....Honestly, I think the changing locations/times might have been what stopped the earlier meetups from happening.

Was a good meetup, only complaint is that it was pretty loud/hard to hear people.  A few of us were saying we should have maybe a potluck/BBQ at the lake for the next one(s).   What's better than being outside on a beautiful day with awesome food, playing vball, frisbee, etc?

I'd be in favor of an outdoor location (ideally with an indoor back-up option in case of bad weather), and I also don't love bars because they are loud. That being said . . .

Couponvan, in the midst of suggestions for future meet-up improvements, I want to make sure that you know your organizing efforts are much appreciated! I'm sure part of the reason for the great turnout was that you set a date, time, and location early, and stuck to the plan. Further, for a random bar, the Option Room turned out to be as good as it gets. We had a whole room to ourselves! That's pretty amazing. So, thank you!

I think I may have found an event that meets the outdoor/free/mustachian criteria at the 6 week interval.  I probably will not be able to make this date unless I bring my kids, but here is my suggested event for a meetup.

http://www.choosechicago.com/event/Millennium-Park-Summer-Film-Series/22238/

Monday, June 21, 2016 - Meetup at 5-5:30 pmFREE movie - Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

The movie starts at 6:30 pm, and the group could bring potluck picnic items to share, with BYOBeverages.  (I'd suggest a large sign with a mustache on it to identify where the MMMers would be as there will probably be a crowd.) I LOVED this movie when it came out, and it's a Chicago classic.

Yes? No?

I think the movie is a great idea. (ooooo, Purple Rain in August - I didn't know the movie schedule was out already.)

As long as there's a rain plan. Was it last year or the year before when every single movie night in the park was rained out?

I was on the park's website just now (http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/millennium_park_-frequentlyaskedquestions.html) and it says no booze during free films except in the pavilion, and I assume we'd be on the lawn. Just FYI. (I was looking because I remember going to a concert there once where security made me dump out my water bottle - which contained only water! - while I was being searched.)

Movie is a great idea; I was about to suggest it after checking my calendar!

@Tris -- unless something has changed since last year (which I suspect would induce a riot), alcohol is allowed on the lawn during the non-ticketed events such as movies. I looked at the FAQ and I think it may have just had imprecise language (I hope!!!).

For a backup location, perhaps the Cultural Center just a block away? It's only open until 7pm on weekdays, so it's not perfect. Or of course Option Room since it's a backup.

Post by: couponvan on May 19, 2016, 12:07:33 PM
OK - at least 3 are in for a movie, so sounds like that should be the next planned event.

Does anyone besides me want to agree to be the "host" for the event? I can't commit to that date at this point.

For a rain backup, there were two people that offered their conference rooms - I will PM them to see if they are available that night and whether one of those locales might work as a backup.

Option Room could be an "option"! ;-)

Hmm, good to know about the booze, I've not been there for an event in a few years. I just remember being really angry that I was being asked to dump out my water - it was a really hot day and I didn't want to have to keep buying it. Fortunately they didn't take the actual bottle so I just refilled in from the water fountains in the underground bathrooms.

This has just came across my mind and I am sure some of you may think it is a bit crazy. I was reading a recent post relating to getting invited to free dinner/events by financial advisers and asset mangers and this dawned on me. I have never been invited and I like free food/ticket :)

Given the combined wealth of all the MMM in Chicago, we could potentially broach this idea and offer to sit in one of their presentations in return for free food/event tickets :)

I am curious to see the combined asset value of the folks in Chicago (I am guessing in the 30-50 million range (if not more), which should peak the interest of any adviser/manager).

Just a thought.

Next meet up! I have family coming from CA and I will see if they are interested in swing this movie too...

Monday, June 21, 2016 - Meetup at 5-5:30 pm.  FREE movie - Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Millennium park movie series

The movie starts at 6:30 pm, and the group can bring potluck picnic items to share, with BYOBeverages.

Let's go have some frugal fun!

There is a Meet Up group in the link below. Sign up there and you can add these events to your calendar easily.  Terry is the leader of that group. He's going to add the meetups from this forum onto the meetup calendar.  Last night the meetup.com note had 23 RSVPs yes...and you know a bunch of us showed up.  It's nice to get the reminders of the upcoming event.

http://www.meetup.com/Financial-Freedom-through-Frugal-Living-Chicago/

Otherwise, here's the next currently scheduled event.....

August 13, 2016. Saturday - 7:00pm-?. Brehon Pub - 731 N Wells Street, Chicago

Also ETA - Thanks Terry for finding and saving my son's MMM shirt. Whew.

Is the Aug 13 meetup still on? It hasn't been posted to the meetup site. I'd like to come since I wasn't able to make the meeting at the Option Room. I'm happy to help plan as well. Let me know!

Title: Re: Chicago meetup
Post by: mschaus on June 20, 2016, 09:56:14 PM
Yup, I still plan on going, and my wife should be able to join. I suggest we meet in the far back center portion of the lawn for the best chance of finding each other and being the least crowded. You never know what night is going to be popular, and tomorrow is the first movie of the season and a good one at that! And it's the 30th anniversary. So might get a crowd.

I was at Millennium Park last week and can confirm it's still BYOB and food!

Anyone have a visible marker/flag of some sort? I can try printing something on letter-sized paper but that's not much.

We're volunteering at Northalsted Market Days, so we might make it or might not depending on how late we get done and how drained we feel. I'm pretty introverted, so I'm not sure if I can handle a day of massive crowds followed up with meeting new people (although I'm sure you're all delightful!).

Hi everyone - a bunch of out of towners are going to be in the area in late October. We would love to meet up with the Chicago MMM'ers.

Saturday, Oct 22:

Anyone who's available on that date, speak up! We can do either afternoon or evening, and location is TBD. Suggestions are welcome. When the NYC group meets, we usually head to a park for a few hours.

The retreat is directly west of  Montrose Beach on the map...will that still be open in October? It looks like a nice place to walk around/hang out if the weather is good.
Title: Re: Chicago meetup
Post by: forestbound on September 07, 2016, 01:33:23 PM
The entire lakefront of Chicago is open and publicly accessable all year round. Montrose beach is fine, North Avenue Beach is nicer. If the weather is nice the lakefront of Chicago is a spectacular place to be, a bike path/running path and sidewalks run the entire length. If the wind is off the lake and it is cold and rainy... well, not so much.

Come as You Are Meetup Saturday 10/22 at 11:00am-1:00pm - North Avenue Beach, Chicago

There are 9 MMM Ladies from across the US doing a "Come as You Are" retreat in Chicago Th-Sun 10/20-10/23.  We'd all love to see some Chicago folks, and we haven't had a big Chicago meetup in awhile.  It will be picnic style, so bring your own blankets and some food you enjoy/can eat and might be willing to share. Beverages are BYOBeverage as well.  All the ladies are staying at a house in the area, so we'll bring our own food/beverages.

Temps are supposed to be in the 60's, so make sure to bring a warm fleece or something.

Barring rain, we'll meet at the North Avenue Beach park at 11:00am on Saturday.  If it is raining (less than 10% chance), we'll converge at Dollop, 4181 N. Clarendon in Chicago.  Frankly, I've never been to North Avenue Beach or Dollop.  I also have no idea if the prices are mustachian at Dollop or not, but  it's less than 10% likely we'll need it.

Below is a link for maps and info on Dollop.

Can you reply here so we'll get an idea of who to be expecting.

MMMrs that are planning to be in attendance so far are :

Couponvan, that sounds great! I'm in and will probably bring a friend (my wife is out of town unfortunately). What is a "come as you are" retreat?

North Ave beach is a great idea and should be pretty calm this time of year. And sunny! Note that technically alcohol is not allowed but a thermos of Irish coffee seems pretty reasonable to me.

FYI there is a (crappy but well-located) restaurant there, Castaways, but it is already closed for the season. I think the public bathrooms will still be open.

Looking forward to it!

How will the lake be?

Like for swimming? Probably for a serious endeavor only. Maybe very low 60s? They stop reporting temp on Labor Day :(. I would need a wet suit! But I haven't been in the water in months.

The infamous TAU!! Oh yes - do bring him.  Your mind will need a break and the cat needs a walk.  (Even though I'm allergic, I LOVE cats...outside they are way better than inside, as I can admire them and not sneeze.) It's going to be cold, but given he's a Chicago cat, it shouldn't be anything he can't handle. :-)

I'll keep trying to brainstorm indoor locations for winter! A condo party room is an awesome idea, or maybe the Chicago Cultural Center or Lincoln Park Zoo Conservatory.

It was great meeting everyone! Even the cat had a good time, once she decided she more-or-less approved of the sand. Hope to see you all next time!

Sorry I wasn't able to make it to the meetup--I really want to meet Tau! I'm very involved in the animal rescue community in Chicago so hopefully we'll be able to connect sometime!

Hi y'all! I'm coming back to town next week (Sunday through Thursday). Who's up for another hang? I've got a couple people interested in the free concert in Millennium Park on Monday night, so that is one option. I'm open Sunday/Monday most of the day, and Tuesday/Wednesday night if someone has another suggestion or wants to meet one on one.

New to the forums and FIRE ideology, and I'd love to talk to some IRL humans about it! Anyone interested in planning a 2017 meet up?

I'm new to Chicagoland and would love to hear how others find ways to save. I'm in Elmhurst, so can use public transit and the bike to get to most places pretty easily...

I am definitely interested in a meetup.  I am in the northwest suburbs.

Interested and close to Northwest suburbs. My preference would be a weekend meetup, although it seems the trend is to do these right after work downtown.

I'd be interested in meeting as well.  Is anyone else here from northwest Indiana?

I travel for work about 11 months out of the year at least, and will be in Chicago for the next two months and would be interested in a meet up!

5:30PM-? (I'm putting 5:30 since that's when I can get there....anyone coming from the North can come later)
737 W Randolph Street
Chicago, IL

I posted a message on the meetup group page - hopefully the organizer will add it as a combined event. There are 210 people on that meetup group.

Hope to see lots of MMMers there.
