Title: Canberra
Post by: deborah on May 25, 2014, 11:39:51 PM
I had such a great time at the Melbourne meet up that I want one where I live - does anyone want a meetup in Canberra?

Someone said they would like to do it after 22nd June. I have been trying to think of an appropriately Mustashian place. Any suggestions welcome.

I did talk to Erindale Library a few months ago (for something else I am doing). There is a room in the library with a kitchenette and an urn that is FREE to any non-charging group with an educational outcome (they have knitters in there on Thursdays) - I am sure we would qualify, and we can definitely eat in there. I could see if we could book it on a Saturday (they are closed on Sundays), and bring stuff. Of course this may be a bit TOO Mustashian.

I assume a weekend would be a more suitable time for people than a week day.

I live 2 or 3 hours from Canberra, but would love to come down if I can make it. Booked solid in June. July looks good. The library idea sounds pretty good - Outdoor picnic in winter in Canberra is prob optimistic!

I'm in.

Keep me posted on where.

A BBQ at one of the lake free BBQ's with cycle access would be in the spirit?

I have just been to Erindale Library. The JP who is there every Saturday has the use of the community room from 11am until 1pm.

We could have it from about 1:15pm to 3:45pm (the library shuts at 4pm on Saturdays). They don't currently have anyone using the room at this time in July, so we could choose whichever Saturday we like. I am currently available any Saturday.

So, is this OK? and which Saturday would you like - 5th, 12th, 19th or 26th July?

http://www.act.gov.au/browse/topics/sport-and-recreation/barbecue-and-picnic-areas is a brochure on parks in the ACT. I looked for ones with gas BBQs and picnic shelter, and came up with - 18 Gungahlin Town Park, 37 Acton Park, 41 Remembance Park, 46 Commonwealth Park, 55 Weston Park, 56 Yarralumla Bay, 60 Telopea Park, 61 Kingston Foreshores, 67 National Arboretum, 68 Stromlo Forest Park,  82 Tuggeranong Town Centre Park, 86 Faden Pines Park, 2 Uridarra Crossing, 14 Honeysuckle (home of the moon walk), 15 Orroral Valley... If we wanted to, there are BBQs at the other end of Wanniassa - in Wheeler Cres opposite where Athllon Drive and Drakeford Drive meet (the park is between the corner and Wheeler Cres).

Count me in too! I'm good for any of those dates in July. The library sounds like the best option for wintry Canberra.

5th and 26th are best for me. I might be able to manage 12/19th if I can pull off some rearranging..

Post by: Evangeline on June 17, 2014, 04:34:37 PM
Sorry guys can't make the 26th. I'm doing family stuff because it's my birthday a ('zero' year!)
Erindale is also pretty far for me, I live northside so it'd probably take
me a whole day to get there! Maybe next meet up we can go to a more centrally located library? I'm sure they'll all have similar facilities available.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on June 17, 2014, 04:57:15 PM
One reason for Erindale Centre is that on Saturdays route 900 buses run there from Belconnen every 15 minutes - see http://www.action.act.gov.au/routes/saturday/900_belconnen - sad you can't make it.

I'm out for the 19th and 26th (un-mustachian interstate weddings for friends).  I'm keen to come though - also northside, so happy to car pool / give a lift if its a day I can attend.

Thanks for organising!

12th is good for me too.
Google maps says it will be a 1 hour 20min bike ride from my place, which is not so bad if it's going to be around 1pm. I'm also just about to buy a new bike, so I'm keen to put it through its paces on that weekend. Thanks for offers of lifts though!!

deborah> thanks for sending my the PMs. I could have sworn I'd turned on notifications for this thread but the option doesn't seem to have 'stuck'.

Post by: Evangeline on June 25, 2014, 06:18:54 AM
Hello all, sorry to be a PITA but something's suddenly come up for me on the 12th at 2pm. It will take me an hour to cycle from Erindale Library to the place I need to get to so is there a possibility for rescheduling to a bit earlier? 12 or anything before that?
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on June 25, 2014, 07:50:39 PM
They came back today - and it is booked for the 12th July at 1:15pm. They don't want us to use the boiling water (they think it is unsafe - it actually is, as the tap is about 30cm above the sink draining board), so I'll bring a thermos flask of boiled water. I'll also bring some soup and some mugs and some whiteboard markers (there are two whiteboards).

Sorry, it can't be earlier as the JP has use of the room until 1pm.

Hope everyone is still coming. I've included a map of where Erindale Library is. I'm really looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday. There is parking out the front of Erindale Library, and the bus stop is about where the knife and fork symbol is, in Comrie Street, next to the shopping centre.

Sending my apologies. Haven't been able to negotiate out of various issues in a way that will leave me free for a whole day, which I will need by the time I drive down and back.

Just a quick thanks to those that braved the cold!  Was good to have a chat with some with a similar financial outlook.

Anyone keen on another meetup?  Personally, I'd like to see what we can share from our experiences - I know I've had a lot of learning's on investments structures and tax, but would be keen to learn more from others on real estate.

Anyone keen?

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on July 20, 2014, 06:19:54 PM
Where would we like to meetup next? Is everyone OK with 14th September?

The ACT library room page http://www.library.act.gov.au/library_services/room_hire says that there are rooms at most libraries, but I think that the one at Dickson, Woden or Kippax, or either training room at Gungahlin seem to be the most appropriate for us. These all have some kitchen facilities and I am not sure that the smallest rooms would be big enough (they would have been last time when we had four).

Of course, in September, we might go for a bbq somewhere, or something else. I would love to try BigChrisB's sausages!

Wilsons Prom. Thanks for liking it - took a few tries to get the mustache right (pity the others weren't good - they had surf behind them). Camped there on the way home, and thought that travel to wonderful places is one of the main reasons people go for MMM.

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: bigchrisb on July 22, 2014, 12:04:02 AM
Thanks for the poll - I've voted.  Northside is good for me.

Have had a change of circumstance since our last meet-up - signed a contract to buy a place (Turner).  Can debate if it was a wise move at the moment or not.  However, after some suggestions on minimizing the damage now its done.

Tricks I can see:
- Rent it out for a while before moving in.  That way I can claim stamp duty as a tax deduction. (I'm not eligible for concessional duty or first home buyer stuff).
- Get lowest rate possible. Best I've found is 4.54 from loans.com.au.
- Get a depreciation schedule done and depreciate the billy-o out of it in the first year.
- Just before the tenant leaves and I move in, get the work I want done, so I can claim that too.  Main things are the carpets, and replacement of a couple of windows with double glazed units, and conversion of halogen lightign to LEDs.  Gets that dealt with in pre-tax dollars.

Once I move into it, pay out the mortgage.  Borrow against it to refinance my margin loan (drop interest rate half a percentage point, remove margin call risk). Get a housemate paying a room cash in hand.

Any other ideas you clever folks can think of?

I had prepared a very convincing presentation on the woes of property investment in Canberra to give at our next gathering, so I guess that I'm going to have to shelve that now...

Just kidding! Congrats on securing a new place and for thinking up ways to maximise its tax deductibility. The only thing that doesn't look right with your cunning plan is that those pre you moving in upgrades sound more of a capital nature to me, hence are depreciable over a few years rather than directly tax-deductible in one year. If you can make some of it sound like maintenance instead, those bits can then be tax deductible.

I've got a loans.com mortgage, for about 6 months so far, at a similar rate.

All is going well so far.

The rate is the best in australia.

Remember to get cashout at eftpos to avoid cash-withdrawl fees.

The startup/paperwork was a bit of a hassle, but that seems normal.

The Loan manager (salesman) tends to palm you off to less competent assistant/support staff.  So watch out for that.

overall, slightly more hassle for very low rate, definitely worth it.

Sounds like I need to mark up the offending single glazed windows with some masking tape and encourage the tenants to play indoor cricket...

Found the place on googlemaps: there seems to be a big car park behind the glassworks, is that the best place to park?

The big car park is probably the best place to park - but there's street parking right outside the cafe too.
It's probably just as unmustachian to buy coffee :P
The weather will actually be pretty good in late sept. Another option is having a picnic at Floriade (everyone bring a plate to share?) with the wet weather option being a cafe.

Welcome Astatine! It's not too late. As it happens, Paleo Perfection does not take bookings. I've been there a couple of times for big group gatherings and there's never been a problem, so I'm pretty confident we'll be able to get a spot (probably outside). Hopefully you'll find our company worth the loss of anonymity :)

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on September 15, 2014, 06:15:03 PM
I have never been there, and I assume it is like most coffee shops where there are initially no tables set up for 6 or 8 or however many we are now. Evangeline said that there were inside and outside tables. The met says the forecast is sunny -2 - 17 with light winds, so it should be warm and not raining (although they predict rain for sunday).

How about the first person there reorganises the furniture outside so there is a table for 8? Would this work? Or would you like everyone to bring something to make a mustache (eg. a piece of rope), that can be placed in the middle of the table, so anyone coming later can recognise it?
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: Evangeline on September 15, 2014, 07:04:12 PM
The outside area is undercover so rain is not an issue. It can be a bit breezy but blankets are provided. It's fairly small so big groups are obvious. I'll try to get there earlier to get tables set up. I'll be the person with a dark green bike helmet on the table.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: happy on September 16, 2014, 03:09:37 AM
11am? Yes? Green bike helmet on table, check.
If I'm late its because I've miscalculated how long it takes to get specifically to Kingston. Or stuck going round and round  on some roundabout or other.

After some people left, we had a discussion about the next meeting. Late November, maybe December, maybe January... so I have changed the poll, removed all the votes, and everyone who wants to come can vote again, for the new dates.

It was suggested that we could have the next meeting at the waterfall (there is evidently a waterfall on the river) in Queanbeyan. Of course, other suggestions are welcome, and might depend on the date chosen.

I really enjoyed meeting everyone - was well worth the drive. I had a moment of panic when I realised I had to walk up to a table of strangers and say "Hi I'm happy!"with a straight face and hope it was the right table. Lucky there was only 1 potential group at the place, and Deborah rescued me from having to say my opening line.

I learnt lots from everyone…hope to make it to the next one.

Thanks everyone for yesterday. We had a great turn out and we discussed some interesting topics.

I thought it interesting that we collectively thought that, assuming you owned your own home, around $35-40K annual spend was about right for a reasonably mustachian Canberran couple to live on. That probably sounds spendy to our American counterparts, but COL is quite high here in Australia, especially in "capital" territory where dual incomes over 150K+ are quite the norm.

I hope I didn't excite people too much with visions of a beautiful waterfall riverside venue in Queanbeyan for our next gathering. It can be quite nice, but being Queanbeyan we may be sharing it with some of the more seedy characters for which the place is famous, which I don't mind at all but is something to be aware of. There is a BBQ area with a table there, which I might have to stake a claim on an hour or so before we meet if that's what we end up doing.

Haha, I know what you mean. When I was in the states I regularly told people it was my dream to retire one day in Hawaii. All the Americans said "but the cost of living is so high!", to which I could only reply with "I'm from Canberra, Australia...".

I thought I was quite on the right track with a budget "not including travel" of around $15,000 a year. I know that will change in the future and get more expensive, but for now it's great to get my financial foundations set before I have to worry about increases in prices.

I'm ok with a lot of different times for meetings, but probably nothing in the 6 weeks between the start of December and midway through January. Venue location sounds good, but if we're looking for public bbq's and worried we may need to reserve one, there are plenty of different locations around Canberra. Tuggeranong, arboretum, plenty of parks. I think we will be ok.

Astatine - is that Halal grocer in Kippax? I couldn't remember where exactly it was. I have a pretty spendy grocery budget so it's always good to know where to get good deals.

I was relieved to hear that my budget of $40,000 (including domestic travel and fancy hobbies) wasn't too out of the ordinary. Hey what does everyone think of having a mustachian case study next time? One of us could bring our budget.

For the next meet up I'm pretty flexible at the moment, since it's so far in advance. Any outside thing would be good, the weather should be great at that time.

I have no problem with seedy, unless its the garrulous and intrusive type of seedy that might necessitate us evacuating.

One thing I'd like to discuss next meeting (if anyone else has an interest?) is insurance for various things. We're probably over-insured for stuff like income protection but I'm wary of prematurely dropping any of my insurances as I'm unlikely to ever be able to re-insure anything other than private health cover, house and car. Damn pre-existing conditions.

Does anyone else's income protection come from their superannuation? Apparently I've been paying for this for years and just discovered it the other day.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: happy on September 22, 2014, 06:35:29 AM
No, I don't have income protection insurance.  Never have. Too expensive,  and I keep a healthy balance of sick leave/LSL.

But I did discover that I had been unknowingly paying for life insurance through my super…for over 25 years, doh! Seems like its not uncommon for super funds to dabble in insurance.  Once I figured out my kids were old enough to look after themselves, and were actually better off financially if I die prematurely (since I wouldn't have to pay for my retirement), I cancelled both my life insurance policies.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: Ozstache on September 22, 2014, 04:58:27 PM
Sunsuper, with whom I set up a new super account to roll my ETP from retiring from my job this year, tried their hardest to set me up with life/income protection insurance but I fobbed it off. Like happy, once you've reached the point of no FI return there is absolutely no point in paying out any more money on life insurance just to benefit an already-healthy future estate.

Like MMM, I keep my insurances to a minimum and risk manage those things that are normally insured that I don't. House and contents set to realistic values (not the ridiculous values the insurance company calculations would have you believe) and maxed out excesses. Vehicle insurances (2) set to market value and maxed out excesses again. I self insure for health and dental. Total insurances for me is around $1100 pa with the house being half of that.

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on September 22, 2014, 05:51:02 PM
It really depends on your level of tolerance, and your situation. People without the ability to self-insure probably need some level of insurance, depending on their situation. With a stash, you have the ability to self-insure. It is also worth looking into what you are automatically insured for. For instance, many years ago the express bus from Melbourne to Sydney smashed into the back of my car while I was waiting at a green light for an ambulance that was already halfway across the intersection. I had whiplash for 3 years, which reduced the amount I could work to about half time. TAC would usually have paid the difference between my earnings over those 3 years and my salary (it didn't because of my personal circumstances). Income protection probably wouldn't have paid anything.

Life Insurance - why with no dependents? But with dependents there is a case, and superannuation is cheaper because it is pre-tax.

Income Protection - if you have a stash, you might not want it. A work mate was out bicycling on a dirt path with his son, fell down an embankment and broke his neck - he didn't have much put away, and income protection saved his lifestyle.

I'm slack with house and contents insurance, vehicle insurance and NRMA membership, in that I almost certainly could/should get less (with more excess), and shop around for a better deal - but I haven't. I think I've had claims against each policy at some stage (not sure about the vehicle policy). Last year I got back a lifetime's worth of NRMA membership payments when I had a problem in outback NSW.

Re Insurance.

I have life insurance and TPD insurance through super. As a sole breadwinner with dependents, I'm very happy to keep these.

My husband has recently started receiving a pension on his TPD insurance which has certainly been welcome. If we weren't as financially well off as we are, losing his income would have been very painful.

I haven't looked at car and household insurances for a while so that might be something worth investigating further. I do know the landlord insurance I'm paying on my rental properties has crept up over the years and is now ridiculously high. I need to seek quotes from elsewhere.

Medical - Until now we haven't bothered with private health insurance, preferring to self-insure. But my husband's medical expenses are starting to pile up, and we may well be in the income bracket where we get slugged with Medicare surcharge so it might be cheaper to get private healthcare.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: agent_clone on September 23, 2014, 06:08:47 AM
I have life, TPD, and income protection insurance via my super. Life and TPD are by default (i.e. 1 unit of each are essentially required), income protection is something that I need at the moment as I don't yet have enough saved in the case of longer term injury.

Otherwise I have comprehensive car and home and contents insurance.  I will probably get private health insurance before the end of this financial year to avoid the lifetime health cover loading, at this point it will probably be the cheapest to meet my needs, but I haven't yet done the research.

I am so excited that I just have to tell you Canberra folks that I've just finished my final assignment for the Master's degree I've been slaving over since the beginning of the year. It's really great to have it out of the way before my Ayers Rock motorbike trip next week and (assuming I pass of course) to finally complete the formal qualification that I have been avoiding for decades. That's one more thing to tick off my bucket list!

BTW, I hope I didn't come across as too scarred from my study experience when we met last week - I was up to my ears in assignments at the time. Upon reflection, the whole year of study was really worth all the effort. Hope you enjoy the rest of your Master's too MsRichLife!

Excellent - you'll really enjoy the wind in your hair  on the trip now. Have a great time.

I smiled inwardly at your so-called negativity…what struck me is I see the same sort of  stuff happening in the health system.  I had been toying with a uni job, but just looking at the job descriptions I'd just be swapping to another set of buzzwords, jargon and politically correct process. Sigh.

Did a recce of the Queanbeyan "waterfall" area today and discovered that the BBQ area I was thinking of did not have any shelter nearby. As it was sunny enough when we last met and we are now getting into the warmer months, I don't think this will be acceptable for our group.

An alternative I came across today while walking my dogs is in my own suburb of Jerrabomberra, near the community centre. As pictured, there are (free) BBQs, covered shelter, plenty of free parking and a pleasant outlook of a duck pond. This area is about 250 m from the Jerra shopping centre, where public toilets and a Woolies can be found.

Unless someone comes up with a better alternative, I propose we meet there around 11:00 on the 29th then have a chat over a relaxing BYO BBQ lunch. If everyone brings whatever meat/other they want to BBQ and a salad or snack plate each I reckon we'll be set. For the super-mustachians amongst us, you can even catch and cook your own duck if you like! <jk> I can go down there an hour or so beforehand and secure the area. I may be habouring two beagles.

Is that OK with everyone?

Yes, 11 am was the time we agreed. I'll get there a little earlier to secure the table.

I suggest everyone brings something to throw on the BBQ, a few drinks, a plate/cutlery/cup for themselves and a small salad/fruit/snack to share between us. I'll bring something to clean the BBQ with, paper towel, oil, BBQ utensils, a few table cloths, serviettes, and some basic condiments (salt/pepper and tomato/hot sauce) for all to use.

Nice to meet you T.I.M.U :)
I really enjoyed myself and thought it all went off well. The more leisurely pace of a barbie was good: since I have a fair drive from a purely selfish point of view its more worthwhile to spend a few hours at a meet-up.

Couldn't help myself: had to calculate my fuel bill to attend: approx 500km return trip, at 5l/100km (probably less on the open road, thats my usual mileage) at $1.30l,  comes to around $30. For a day out with mustachians - you're worth it.

I had a fantastic free bbq a few weeks ago at the National Arboretum, just down from where the "Wide Brown Land" monument is. Although that might not be the best for the mustachians that ride out to these things (you'll have to work for that food)!

Just trying to get the ball rolling...

Although I will say. Guys, it's Canberra. Name a place outdoors and its probably going to be free, beautiful, and oddly underutilised by the rest of the town!

Post by: DrowsyBee on January 19, 2015, 03:41:06 AM
I couldn't give you a definite answer.

There are two bbq hot plates next to each other, and three tables/benches. Surrounding it there are adequate places for a picnic (we had an infant with us so had a picnic blanket out and all).

When we arrived there was a family there (who just wouldn't budge out of the perfect spot in the shade!), and about three more families passed us wanting our great location out of the sun in the hour that we were there. It's a great spot, but if it's 35C+ outside, take a picnic blanket because there's a bunch of trees surrounding the bbq area to sit under!

Depending on the location in the arboretum, it might be very windy

I sometimes go to the kids playground near the visitors centre on top of the hill, and the wind speed is double to triple the bureau's published windspeed from the airport.

I do like that spot at the Arboretum - it's in the Himalayan cedar forest IRRC. However, I will need to be in the shade after about 10am - I burn super easily and tend to wilt a bit in the heat. (I'm really not designed for Canberra summers!)

There's also Black Mountain Peninsula for central-ish picnic spots, or possibly Weston Park (haven't been there for ages, tho, so I'm not sure how practical the picnic spots are there). Or Glebe Park, although parking may be yukky on a Saturday due to proximity to the Canberra Centre.

I've had 2 weekends in a row where I've been knocked around by an arthritis flare up, and followed by a migraine or hints of a migrain first day back at work, or hints of a migraine. Very annoying, so I might end up resting this weekend. :/ Ah well.

Believe it or not, there is a bus that takes you to the Arboretum - 981 on the weekends - and it has 3 stops in the Arboretum itself - one of which it the Himalaya Cedar car park!
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on January 30, 2015, 01:13:58 AM
If it is raining (according to Google, this is a 0%-3% chance), we will meet at the Himalayan Cedars car park and work out where to go. We can probably get food at the Arboretum cafe, and the undercover area looks large enough for us. Since they encourage picnics (according to their web site) this must be something they cater for.

Yes I am interested. Just to mention  there's a Sydney meet up posted for 27th June  sat arvo, at a little park near Central station, (which I haven't fully decided about, but would like to go to if I can manage it).

Where are you detrimental12? We had a meetup at the Erindale Library last year in the middle of winter. I think at least one of the northern libraries has a meeting room we could use for free. Our meetups have been in Erindale, Quenbeyan, the Arboretum, and Kingston foreshore so far, so Belconnen, Gungalin and the city would be good. I don't know coffee shops in those areas unfortunately (apart from Ricardo's).

Civic library has a room with after hours access that we could have for free as we are unincorporated and have a learning outcome (of course we would have to check that it was available). Gungahlin has lots of rooms - see http://www.library.act.gov.au/library_services/room_hire

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on August 10, 2015, 09:03:41 AM
It appears that those who were coming this weekend cannot make it the following weekend, so I will book the Erindale Library seminar room for 1:30 - 3:45pm this Saturday - I checked today and it is free, so I will put the appropriate paperwork in tomorrow.

The library is close to the bus stop, and on the weekends, the inter-town bus (900) to Tuggeranong stops at Erindale Centre, so it goes every 15 minutes and comes directly from Civic and Belconnen. There is also a car park right outside the library. To get to the room, you need to enter the library, and it is at the other end (diagonally) from the entrance - as far from the entrance as it is possible to go!

The bus stop is being worked on at the moment (I've seen the works but not what is happening), and it is along one side of the shopping centre. To get to the library from the bus stop, go along the wall to the major car park (if you came from the city you will continue along the wall), and along that side of the shopping centre, along the shops (TAB and others), and the library is behind the shops behind the Woolworths petrol station.

I'm glad everyone wants to have a meetup - that is excellent. I have changed the poll, so everyone can vote for any dates in December/January that suit. I'll probably need to include February, but we will see. With several staunch meetup goers not available on the 13th, I assumed it was not worth including.

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: agent_clone on January 19, 2016, 01:47:14 AM
Personally for ADSL I would be more worried about location (i.e. distance to the exchange) than provider if you want speed/are able to get ADSL at all... Most of Tuggeranong has crap internet as an FYI.  Gungahlin and Molonglo Valley areas have NBN, Queanbeyan is soon to have NBN.  A fair chunk of the northern suburbs have an additional option of VDSL from Transact which is a more expensive option.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question for prices/performance, but I will say that iiNet (so iiNet and Internode) and Optus made deals with Netflix so the content is unmetered.  You could also try over here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/92

Edit:

There are links to the broadband quality/speeds that the government did here. https://www.mybroadband.communications.gov.au/reports.aspx

OK - it will be Ozstache lake on 31st January - as you can see in  reply 113 and 121 in this thread. What about 12noon? There are free bbqs and under cover tables. People do fish in the lake if you want to bring your fishing gear, but I'd be surprised if they found anything other than carp.

We had a great time at the meetup today. The wind was rather brisk, so after half an hour (in case anyone arrived a bit later) we adjourned to the OzStache abode, and had a good discussion about things Mustachian.

I guess the next meetup will be in about 2 months - so the end of March or beginning of April. Does anyone have any particular dates for this, or suggested meetup locations? I guess an indoor venue might be best.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: DrowsyBee on January 31, 2016, 01:17:23 AM
Especially at that time of year, yes, indoor will be best. I wish I could have been there today, but as I said before, the partner that I was so excited to have over for the whole year is going back tomorrow for a few months between visas.

I'll definitely be at the next one if it is in April. The last weekend in March is Easter, so there might be less people in Canberra. So the weekend of the 2nd/3rd, 9th/10th would probably be best, although I know Celebrate Gungahlin will be on the 2nd, which I will be at!

We have been given Training Room 1 at the Gungahlin Library from 1pm to 4pm on 23rd. They have training rooms and community rooms which are both small, and conference rooms which are much bigger. The Training rooms have kitchen facilities, so we can bring tea and coffee type stuff (it is not supplied). I have not asked for permission to have hot food but anyone can bring cold food. The Gungahlin Library customer service desk will open it up for me. I mentioned Mr Money Mustache in the booking, so if I arrive late you should be able to get in. There are groups in the rooms before 1pm. The library closes at 4pm, so I expect we will be chased out slightly prior to that. I guess, if we are still chatting, we could go to one of the cafes in the area.

I have never been there, and I hope parking there is free. I was going to choose Belconnen, but I couldn't see any free parking when I was in the area.

We sit around and talk about whatever we feel like - generally investing, saving and frugality - for instance, Ozstache has been known to talk about the improvements he is doing to his house to make it cheaper to run, including his solar system, and BigChrisB about investments.

There is actually an occasional Sydney meetup - but they have been having it using some other app, so it doesn't come up in the forums. See the Sydney meetup thread, http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/sydney-meetup/msg1139677/#new - now I have looked at it, there is a meetup on Saturday there as well - http://www.meetup.com/Sydney-Mustachians/events/232165080/

You would be welcome to ours - I would like to meet you in the flesh - but I suggest that it might be easier for you to meet the Sydney people.

I'm closer to Sydney but haven't been to their meet ups - due to a combination of dates/ times just not suiting - including this meet up clashing, and I've already met the Canberra guys and feel pretty comfortable with that group. As we have never met there before, I suppose people need to know where the Gungahlin Library is

Corner of Hibberson and Gozzard streets, Gungahlin ACT

This is the most northern part of Canberra. Canberra is divided into six towns - Gungahlin, Belconnen, Tuggeranong, Woden, Weston and Civic. Each town has a number of suburbs. Some town centres are the same name as the town, others are not. Gungahlin is. You may find you are following signs to "town centre" once you are already in Gungahlin. As I live in the south, we have usually met in Civic or Tuggeranong rather than the north, or across the border in Queanbeyan.

I had a really good time today - thanks for coming everyone! We should schedule another meedup in late September/ early October.

Was Gungahlin library a preferred winter location? I'm not sure if everyone saw the kitchenette - it was definitely superior to the one at Erindale Centre.

FYI for any Canberrans, Gungahlin has some great resources that a lot of people don't know exist. The Access Canberra shopfront is empty all the time if you don't wanna waste time!

Hi, welcome to the forum. Maybe you could make a few posts, tell people a bit about yourself?

I prefer only meeting up with people I know a bit about and have got to know a little on the forum first.

As it happens, we should be organising another meetup. At the last one, we agreed to meetup in September so we could bid farewell to MsRichLife before she disappears into the wilds of the north. This poses a bit of a dilemma because that means it needs to be either of the next two weekends if I am organising it - 10th or 17th September.

Will anyone be available for those weekends?

It looks like time for another of our Canberra meetups (I started with Fabulous, Famous and then realised I couldn't think of an F word for Meetup, ah well). I have changed the poll (I presume that no-one wants to meet this weekend - especially as there is an election on).

I think it is getting warm enough that we could have a meetup at the Arboretum. If anyone has a different suggestion, I am happy to hear it. It should be early enough that the BBQ won't be having hoards of Christmas party groups at it.

Thanks for organising, deborah. I'm happy with the Arboretum as long as there is good shade (one of my meds makes me very sun sensitive plus I don't cope well with heat).

Last time we were at the Himalayan Cedar Forest barbeque and picnic area (which has its own car park which is free - the bus also stops at this car park). It is reasonably shady - there is a platform (with views) which is not shady, but there are shady areas.

We've had no trouble recognising each other in the past - there will hopefully only be a couple of groups there. And we won't look like a family. I think there will be about six or seven of us, but there are sometimes people who haven't said they're coming. And some people bring SOs, friends, children (both young and adult) or a dog occasionally. And this time we have about four (including you) who are your sort of age or a bit older.

Things went well at the arboretum today. The sun shone (but not too hard), people came from near and far, we had a table in the shade, everyone arrived, and found one another, and I think we all had a good time (although it did get a bit cold). I really enjoyed myself. There was a halloween party where everyone seemed to have cat's ears, but they were friendly and nice to us. We even talked about Mustachian stuff. It was really nice to meet everyone. We will probably meet next in February. Probably the library, since that has air conditioning.

Agreed, it was nice to see some new folks ( some of whom live even further away than me) and the familiar faces of the longer term members. I loved the venue - maybe another one there sometime. I had a big time dose of hay fever, there must have been some pollen about, but otherwise a really nice day.

Yes, it was good to catch up with everyone IRL and match people up with their on-line persona.

It also would have been good to stay longer, but I had to get home for other commitments. I think I spent 7 hours behind the wheel for a 2 hour lunch, but at least I was driving in daylight! (What I saved on lunch I spent on fuel lol)

Thanks to everyone for being friendly and accepting, pretty good for such a diverse group, and to Deborah for organising and (Astatine for the popcorn?)

Following!

We're likely to be in Sydney (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/journals/where-in-the-world-is-arebelspy/msg1315149/#msg1315149) in a few months.  I don't know if we'll be able to make it down to Canberra or not, but want to follow when the meetups are in case we can make it down.  :D
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on November 23, 2016, 09:20:54 PM
So Arebelspy is possibly coming to our neck of the woods. It was suggested (probably by me and there was some enthusiasm), that we could have an all day, or even a weekend event:

The Gungahlin Library has rooms that are available free to us because we are a non-incorporated group with a learning outcome - they even have their own kitchen, but we would have to ask specially if we wanted hot food. These rooms are available both on Saturday (when the library is open) and Sunday (when it is shut) because the rooms have a separate entry to the library.

We could have sessions, with a leader - for instance on solar panels, investment, property (there are people who have come to the Canberra meetups who could lead each of those sessions, if we twisted their arm) - so please suggest sessions you want, or could lead. I think this could be reasonably laid back, with a list of sessions, that everyone votes for, and the one with the most votes goes to the top of the list, and we come to them in order of interest. If we want time to just chat, we can do that at any stage.

There are BBQs in the area, so we could easily have one at around dinner time, and keep everything cool in the refrigerator in the library room. And we could have a cold lunch.

I have put suggested dates up the top in the poll, please nominate.

Post by: deborah on November 26, 2016, 03:47:31 AM
Sorry to those who had already replied - I had to change the poll as it didn't actually ask what I wanted to know. I had to delete the votes that had already happened. Please fill it out again if you already had.

from what I can see, Arebelspy won't be coming to our neck of the woods until March. Since this is the case, do we want to go ahead with a one day event in February, or do we want to do it when he is around?

The other question is if we do put off the one or two day event, do we want a normal event in February as well?
Title: Re: Canberra

I think it would be best to put the bigger event off til Joe comes in March. I'd be up for a regular meet up in Feb if there is interest.

Title: Re: Canberra

Well, ARS isn't coming. And I think I am partly to blame. However, I have learnt that when you make a suggestion, ARS does the opposite.

He was coming back to Australia in January, and wanted to see the outback. I told him that January was pretty hot in the outback, and suggested Tasmania OR New Zealand, instead. He agreed, and told me he would come here at the end of February and be around Canberra and Sydney for March. (Secretly, I think he's keener on seeing Sydney than Canberra.)

THEN, he saw a RV relocation to go to Perth from Melbourne, so they went back to Castlemaine in January (not NZ or Tassie), and went to Perth in the first full week of February. Maybe I wasn't explicit about just where outback Australia was. They were then going to NZ and back to Sydney and Canberra for March. This sounded a bit of a stretch to me.

THEN they realised that things were too tight, so they are staying in WA for a week, departing for NZ and then back to northern climes for the rest of the year.

I think he now realises that things ARE a bit hot in January, and driving through the second wettest day that part of WA has had in recorded history probably wasn't on his bucket list. But it's the sort of experience that people remember in later years.

So, getting back to our next meetup, when would you like it to be?
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: happy on February 15, 2017, 06:03:06 AM
Well I'm jealous the Perth Girls got to meet ARS and family and we didn't, but then being footloose and fancy free is what retirement is all about. I reckon sooner or later They'll make it to Sydney and we can either lure him down to Canberra or trek up to Sydney to meet up.

I did say I was available this coming weekend but now I'm not. So late Feb, or March?

A little bit of history.

Marty998 started a Sydney meetup thread. Some of us tried to get that going, and even tried to have a couple of meetups in between the two places. None of this worked out, although Ozstache and I managed to meet Marty998 in Bowral one day (after the Canberra meetups started). Eventually, I started the Canberra thread, and we got a Canberra meetup going.  Even after that, we tried a couple of times to get a meetup in between the two places. Now there is a Sydney meetup happening, and they appear to be very active.

I would be happy to go to a halfway meetup. Although I have organised almost all the Canberra meetups, there is also no reason why someone else can organise a meetup on this thread, or on another one (I think using this thread or the Sydney thread would be better, as people know about them), for Canberra or somewhere midway between Sydney and Canberra. It is a meetup for MMM people - not for Deborah! And I will happily come along.

However, since the Sydney people have managed to get meetups happening and have a wonderful meeting schedule, I certainly don't want to destroy it (I just wish I could manage to get to it) by organising meetups very close to Sydney!

It is a long drive, I've done it before, but I'm thinking of combining it with a visit to the National Gallery for the Versailles exhibition. That way I can stay overnight, and get two experiences for the price of one! (Well one is free anyway lol)

Anyone is welcome! The Arboretum has a picnic area at the Himalayan Cedar Forest which is rather nice, and where we meet - free parking (the main Arboretum car park is not free), bus stop, bbqs and space age toilets as well as incredible views across Canberra.

HOWEVER

I have just looked, and they are opening 4 new gardens on 2nd April - from 12 - 3, so it may not be the best place to meet or we could meet at 11am to avoid the crowds and get a picnic table and bbq. I suspect the crowds will be at the main car park and around that vicinity, so we may be away from all the hoopla.

So what do you think?
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: LonerMatt on March 25, 2017, 12:07:34 AM
1. Yes, dusty, YESSSSSSSSSSS

2. 11 works for me, but there's also a raft of other options (Talopea Park, foreshore, Regatta Point, etc). I kind of feel we just need to say 'we'll be in (place) from x-y, please come when you are free all'.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: happy on March 25, 2017, 04:27:57 AM
I'm hoping to come, but might be a non-starter depending. My old folks are needing attention again and I'm not sure if I'll need to be in Sydney.
11am is OK with me, I'll just make an earlier start. Any location is OK, as long as its not too hard to find for an out-of-towner ( yes, I know thats almost anywhere in Canberra, all those roads just go round in circles, but I've managed so far)..

I plan to be at the Arboretum from 11am, so if people arrive when they arrive, that is OK. If rain is predicted on the day, I will send a message out before 9am to meet at an alternative venue, since the undercover parts of the Arboretum will probably be full. Any suggestions about what the alternative could be would be gratefully received.

Hey guys, went walking to Mount Gingera yesterday and fell down on the way back down Stockyard Spur (which is an insane walk, by the way). I'm really trying to rest up today since I ride my bike from Kingston to Kambah to work and it's the only option I have.

I might make it over but I doubt it, we'll see if the buses are forgiving.

Just joined.  Soooo did the meetup go ahead?  Im keen for Canberra meetups but work away a bit at present which could be challenging.
Sounds like a small group in Canberra? not really keen to travel halfway to Sydney.

We had a small select group at the meetup. It was very enjoyable. The sun shone, the company was good - what more can you ask?

As many people missed out, how soon would you like the next meet up?

Well, there is a BBQ at Haig Park - near where Masson St meets Moore St. Haig Park (for those who don't know) is a very long and narrow park that separates the city from the north. Braddon ends at Haig Park, but the BBQs are on the west side of Northbourne Ave rather than the East side. The BBQ is a little hard to spot, as it is surrounded by bushes, but it is immediately north of the carpark. Or we could go to one of the places in Lonsdale St Braddon, but they might be shut on Easter Monday.
Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on April 14, 2017, 08:47:23 PM
Or we could go to Glebe Park - which is even closer to the city (actually in the city) - and it has bbqs too although I'm not sure where. It is a nicer park.

I'm happy with your Judgment Deborah.  I don't know Canberra that well but will be visiting my Sister in Scullin.  From my limited experience - compared to Sydney - everywhere in Canberra is only 15 minutes away.

Hi everyone!

I'm pretty new to this, but appreciate any help you might have, I'm struggling with my garden in the winter and I'm getting lazy with the bike. But knowing there are some locals around, is a huge help. A lot of people know about the blog, and we have been swapping advice, so there might be a few more mustachians out this way than the forum is showing.

From reading the thread, looks like the meetup hasn't happened yet? I'd be keen to come along if there is another one organised soon, the picnic/bbq idea is nice.
Title: Re: Canberra

Hello all. I have just had a BRILLIANT idea. We can have our next meetup at a library, and I can bring my screen printing gear. I have loaded down the PNG that MMM has put on his T-shirt - see http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/shirts/. Everyone can bring their t-shirt Or whatever else - BBQ Apron?), and we can all end the meetup with MMM T-shirts (if you want them).

What do you think?

When do we want to do this? As usual, I have changed the poll...

Title: Re: Canberra
Post by: deborah on November 19, 2017, 10:14:54 PM
From Parks ACT...

Telopea Park is an eight hectare park in Barton with picnic and playground areas, cycle and pedestrian paths, public toilets and barbecues. It features an informal mix of mature exotic and native trees, and is a popular venue for family picnics.

Created in 1922, Telopea Park takes its name from the floral emblem of New South Wales. Its informal evergreen/deciduous landscape character and mature trees make it a strong attraction to pedestrians and cyclists from nearby residences, the Kingston and Manuka shopping centers and suburbs further away.

Facilities and activities

    Toilets
    Electric/gas BBQs
    Playground
    Drinking water
    Picnic shelter
    Picnic tables
    Dogs on leash
    Cycling

From the map, there is a Y into Telopea park more or less opposite Currie Cres. There appears to be a playground on the left side and a BBQ on the right side, and possibly the toilets are there. Meeting at the BBQ sounds like a plan. If anyone can verify any of this, I would be happy. But it looks like there is shade and amenities.

MEET THERE AT 10am on 9th December.

I went past Telopia park today so I dropped in and took a few photos of the BBQ area we are planning on using. Plenty of shade and free parking. Didn't see any toilets but I am sure they'll be close by. I will be walking my dogs there on Sunday so will confirm the toilet situation, if Astatine doesn't do so beforehand.
Title: Re: Canberra

The toilets are over the little drainage creek in the middle of the park, but more or less opposite the playground.

Hello Canberrans!

My family and I live in the States, but my husband grew up in Darwin and his family's now all in Canberra -- we try to go back every 2-3 years for an extended visit. We will be heading out and doing a home exchange in Griffiths from mid-June to mid-Aug this year, so would love to get on the radar for any meetups during that time... We have 2 children (aged 4 and 8), and it'd be great to find free/cheap ideas for entertaining them as well.

Still a ways off from departure date, but feel free to connect and I'll keep an eye out for activities closer to the time!

Canberra’s a good place for free activities (just moved there myself this month). I recommend looking up TripAdvisor reviews for things to do in Canberra. Art gallery, war memorial, museum etc are all free and there are seemingly plenty of good picnic spots by lakes. Bicycle friendly too, if you bring tredlies.

Welcome!

Canberra has lots of freebie things to do and see. There is also the National Arboretum (which has a great playground for kids), the National Botanic Gardens, lots of walks, parks with good playgrounds and nearby national parks (might be a fee to visit those, it's been a while since I've gone).

Not free but cheap - I will always recommend to Americans (having an American partner myself) a drive down to the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Not free, but a lovely place where you can see lots of native australian flora and fauna. If you pack a picnic, there are free and well maintained bbqs to use. Just please don't feed the Kangaroos and Emus.

I forget how much it costs but I think its around $10-15 per car?

P.S. If you like space stuff, quite close by the to Tidbinbilla is the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex. Its free. It'll have a lot of stuff about the moon landing because the images of the first moonlanding were relayed through the satellite at honeysuckle creek.

So we have 3 votes for Sat 3 March. Should we lock it in? @deborah @happy @Ozstache @LonerMatt @bigchrisb (and anyone else who I've left out of that list)

We could try Telopea Park again at 10am as long as we're in the shade, hopefully won't be too hot. Whaddya reckon?

I'm happy.  Same place is easy for me, a different place is a part of exploring Canberra (one wonders why one would want to do that, but there you go) @Ozstache @deborah @LonerMatt @bigchrisb

Sounds Good!

@happy and anyone else traveling from interstate (except OzStache who isn't coming from the North) may wish to go down Majura Parkway rather than negotiating Northbourne Avenue and its extensive tram works. In fact, I would use it instead of Northbourhe Avenue every time.

I think so - I Googled the park mentioned and it popped up south of the city. Then, will look for a group which doesn't look like family.....

I'll put an event reminder up on the Mustachians Australia group on Facebook for this next meetup, just in case any interested local doesn't frequent the forums here.

Here's the location photo that I posted up:

Definitely this Saturday.

It was 10am last time, and I can't see any specific time for this one, so unless @Ozstache has put a different time on facebook, we will go with 10am.

IF THERE IS A TIME ON FACEBOOK, we will go with that time. Sound reasonable?

I got here a bit early to grab a table. I got the same one as last time. It has a colour bond shelter, right next a gas bbq, and halfway between the playground and the toilets. It’s next to a little white bridge going over the storm water drain. (in Telopea Park).

Great meetup yesterday! For those asking what the military aircraft were we heard, the first was a 3-ship F/A-18 fighter jet flyover and the second was a C-17 transport aircraft for the Chief of Defence Force parade at ADFA. See http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/fa18-hornet-flypast-over-canberra-for-adfa-chief-of-defence-force-parade-20180302-h0wxxh.html (http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/fa18-hornet-flypast-over-canberra-for-adfa-chief-of-defence-force-parade-20180302-h0wxxh.html)

If it's like today, outside would be perfect! But who knows what May will be like (I haven't turned on my heater yet and it's past ANZAC day o.O).

I can't do 6 May. I have to go to a small child's birthday party plus it's the pumpkin festival in Collector. The other days are free for me atm.

I went to the library yesterday. The room there is supposedly only for the college now - not for worthy others, but they are checking up on it, and on rooms available in other libraries. They are supposed to be getting back to me. Given the date, let's make it next week (25th May), and we could go to a cafe (any suggestions?) if no library is available.

Hmm if public library space is only available for the college I would be very cranky and have something to say about that...even the college website says the library is a "joint use facility". Surely there isn't a high demand from the school on a weekend?

I seem to be the first one to query the current situation. The librarian is working towards fixing it so the room is available on weekends, but they haven’t sorted it out with the college yet. She rang me back today. Other factors that make this difficult at the moment include that she is expecting to go on maternity leave any day, and I need to visit my parents for the coming week - but I’ll be back for Saturday.

And I’ve just discovered that we have a public holiday on Monday 28th!

Anyway, we could meet at the Arboretum main building. There’s a cafe there (don’t confuse it for the restaurant), and we could meet in the large area in front of the cafe. If it’s a really nice day, we could go to the Himalayan Forest where we have met before, otherwise go to the cafe itself. Does that sound ok?

I'll look into the Belco libraries if I remember (sorry, brain is mostly full of reno planning).

An alternative could be going to one of the many clubs across the city? I'm not sure what their policies are for BYO food though - I'll do some googling. Between DH and I, we're a member of 4 or 5 clubs across the city, and I'm ok with joining another one/renewing lapsed membership*.

*Hanging out in clubs is useful when it's too hot to be at home in summer, or if I need good filtered air-con when my lungs aren't coping with bushfire smoke etc.

The rain caused damage, which was inspected, and they found suspected asbestos (pretty sure it was sheet) that had been damaged, so it’s closed until further notice.

We are a small, unincorporated group with a learning outcome, so library room hire is free.

I do like the idea of a club (although I’m not a member of any). In the early days we did go to cafes for lunch, so we don’t have to go somewhere that’s free - it’s just a combination of my frugal tendencies and the fact that, at various times different people have had different food requirements.

Hey guys,

So not formally a meetup but I'll be having an art show at my apartment December 8th. You're all invited but if you are interested in details without commitment PM me your email address and I'll send you an invitation. It'd be great to get the chance to say hello and goodbye again, as by Christmas time we'll be gone from Canberra for at least 2 years (though maybe not any more than that).

Cool reasons to come hang at my place and talk shit:

1. Deborah is nice as and probably has many cool photos of her trip
2. I'm baking cookies and brownies and they're pretty rad
3. It is literally covered in art that you can look at OR ignore (it's your choice)
4. All of my furniture is super cheap so while it's not the best we can revel in the bargains
5. I'm considered not the worst sort by most
6. Free tea (what? how MMM is that. hack the system, bank the profits.)
7. Laughs!

I have to be in the inner north by 11am. I’m ok with outside if there’s no significant bushfire smoke or dust but would prefer an indoor location (arboretum does have the indoor visitors area). But, given I’ll be leaving early, you should probs go with a majority view, not just me.

Hi,  I'm new to this forum.  Please message me if you plan a meet up, I'm keen to meet other mustachians :)

I was listening to a 2 frugal dudes podcast about meet up groups, so I'm happy that one in Canberra exists.

I hope to see you in the near future, cheers, Adam.

Hi everyone. I’m also new to this forum. My wife and I have been madly reading everything mustachion for about 4 months now and slowly been developing our frugality muscle along with a healthy attitude of badassity. We live in Canberra and would like to meetup with others travelling the mustachion journey.

I’m now home from our trip, and it’s time for another meetup. When would people like it to be?

Just letting everyone interested in Canberra meetups that the Choose FI'ers are having one this weekend outside the Capital Brewing Co Brewery on Sunday 20 Oct 19 between 2:30pm and 4:30pm and have extended the invitation to our group. Looks like they have 5 going already. I've got family visiting this weekend so I'll probably be a no show.

Thanks for posting. Unfortunately I'm booked up that day, otherwise would have considered going just to mingle with the crowd. I've already seen it, so I'm not too sad about missing the film.

That's a shame. I'm planning on going so it would have been good to catch up!

Oops. All ACT suburbs sound the same to me!
