Title: Calgary, AB Meetup? Are there any on the horizon?
Post by: lifejoy on July 17, 2015, 02:28:54 PM
I just moved here two weeks ago... looking to make some friends and increase my network! Is there a meetup on the horizon? Should we create one? Looking forward to meeting you all!

Calgary is where I live but I am in Yellowknife for work, six weeks at the time. My next trip back home will be at the end of August for a couple of weeks but I am planning to drive to Vancouver Island to check out on our piece of land. If there were a meetup during my next turnaround, sometime between October 21 and November 4, I'd be up for it.

I'm in Calgary. Started reading MMM about a year ago, then my wife had a baby and things got crazy. But now I'm back and I've been reading and enjoying the blog more than ever.  I've got two other confirmed MMM reader friends in Calgary as well.  I won't speak for them officially but I may be able to convince them to come out for a meet up.
If we're going to stick with the suggested dates thus far, I'm good with that. Either an afternoon thing on the weekend of Oct 24-25 or an evening thing on Oct 21, 22, 28, 29.  Hopefully we have some nice autumn weather in the city so we can be outside.

Whereabouts in the city do people live? I'm in the SW/inner city.

I know this city is all about oil and gas money, but there HAS to be more of us out there reading MMM and trying to incorporate the concepts to our lives.

I am in the Beltline/Victoria Park just across from the Memorial Central Park Library. End of October sounds good!

Victoria Park could be a good spot for a picnic... I'm not sure how the weather will be at the end of October, though. It's my first winter here. Any suggestions? With so much time to prepare, I could definitely save up for a nice outing!

For what it is worth. This being said, I like living in Calgary, mind you, I'm there only 2 weeks out of every two month.

I am reasonably close to Calgary, and hubby works out of Leduc, so we are through quite often.  I would love to try to catch up with a few of you.  I am more of a chronic lurker, but would enjoy meeting some other like-minded people! :)

I'm in the Hillhurst area NW Calgary. A late October meet-up in the evening or weekend works well for me

Let's combine this post: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/meetups-and-social-events/calgary-mmms/ with the one we're in now.

We can finalize a firm date and time in early October.  Sunset is around 6:15pm late October so if we meet outside in the evening we should aim for someplace that is well lit. If we go for the weekend it won't matter.

Possible meeting spots that I've seen mentioned and/or would suggest due to centrality and accessibility by bike: Central Memorial Park, Prince's Island, Edworthy, Stanley Park, Riley Park, or, because I haven't checked it out yet, the new St. Patrick's Island.  If it happens to be blistering cold we can audible to a warm pub.

My response to this article: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/most-livable-cities-include-vancouver-toronto-calgary-in-top-5-1.3194833 - Do not read the comments unless you want brain overload from complainypants and general hatred.

Central Memorial Park is nice for a picnic, it vaguely reminds me of Paris, with the Boxwood restaurant right on the park, and there are tables and chairs around the old public library building. If it is cold or raining, there is a pub at the north-west corner of the park.

If it's good weather and we can meet in the park, is anyone interested in a potluck type picnic? It's my first fall/winter in Calgary, so maybe this suggestion is crazy! Someone let me know :D

It's a risky time but worth a try lol. We can wait closer to the date and decide if a picnic in the park is a good thing. I've been in Calgary for over 10 years and have learned that you can not depend on the weather.

I propose October 24 or 25, lunch picnic at Central Memorial Park, we bring our own food/drink, meeting in front of the Library Building. If the weather is not on our side, we can go for a pint in the nearby pub.

Looks like you guys have a possible meet up scheduled the week after my wife and I will be visiting Calgary.  If anyone is interested in a meet up with some out of towners, let me know.  We will be there Oct. 12-19th.  A meet up at a park or a short hike would be great.  We've met so many awesome people at meet ups and camp mustache and would be willing to meet some more.  Is anyone interested?

I don't know if I will make it into Calgary for the upcoming meet up, but if anyone is travelling West and wants to pit stop in Golden (or you are forced to stop due to highway closure) please PM me :)

We will be heading to Banff and lake louise but probably won't make it to Golden.  If we do we would like to meet up though.  But if anyone wanted to meet up in those areas or Calgary just let me know.

Saturday is supposed to be Cloudy, high of 6 degrees. Still plan to meet outside? I've got the kid all day but she likes playing outside. Ship and Anchor allows kids until 6pm I think...

I guess what I'm saying is that this weekend isn't the most convenient for me but if someone sets a time and place I will do my best to be there. If, however, we postpone, I'm fine with that as well.

I just got back to Calgary. I am still good for a get together Saturday at noon, Memorial park or anywhere else. I'm making a couple of quiches :)

I am so sorry - I really dropped the ball. I'm a manager in the retail world so my life has been... dominated by work. I was working that day and neglected to respond. I am so sorry. It's not like me to be rude in this way, so please know that I feel badly about it. At least it wasn't snowing and -10!

Ykphil, once you get set up on Gabriola, we should have another Vancouver Island/Gulf Islands MMM Meetup. I personally GUARANTEE that I will show up. The one we had in Cowichan Bay this past Summer was pretty great, and I may have made a couple of long term connections out of it.

Sorry about the Calgary snafu. :(

I contributed hugely to the fail. Sometimes I get nervous about meeting people. I'm so sorry!

Maybe I could help us try again? Be part of the solution, instead of part of the problem? :)

Lol, I don't think there was any single person that contributed to the failure.  It is just hard to get a group of strangers together.  We all have different schedules and different priorities in our own lives so finding time to fit in "others" is tricky.  I'm still interested in meeting other mustachians but February is going to be an absolute gongshow (I have to go out east to care for a family member and my work schedule got compressed into the time I'll have here in YYC) so I would have to bow out of anything that might happen in February.

My schedule changes monthly so I have NO idea what March will look like yet.

Ok I am going to schedule two meet ups anyways and hopefully everyone can make it out! I will message the people that also replied a while ago but haven't seen the recent feed.

Please come out! We are very friendly people and don't be shy. We need to be brave enough to build this community. I always find nature has a way of bonding people and making them feel comfortable. It's always easier to open up when you are exercising or in the outdoors.

Don't worry about the snow shoes guys! If you have ever been to nose hill park, you'll realize that you probably don't need any! Just bring your winter hiking shoes or boots and you should be good to go!

Don't back out on me now for not having snow shoes!! Haha. Its all good!

SOMETHING YOU GUYS MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT:
I have decided to start planning the first Annual Alberta mustache campout. It's going to be September long weekend this year at Jarvis Bay Provincial Park on Sylvan Lake. Great location between Calgary and Edmonton. Let's get the feeds coming!

I'm tucked away in Canmore but could see myself attending if my schedule lines up as well. Unfortunately the Saturdays that everyone else has off most likely won't work for me. Another time, another day! Perhaps Sylvan Lake (Also happy to carpool with anyone from the city who is carless)

Thanks for the invite to this get-together. I haven't been on the forum for about six months so it might be the right time to update my friends here...unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this get-together, as I am presently very...hmmm...busy...

At the end of last summer, my Yellowknife position was downgraded to part-time, so I took this as an opportunity to negotiate a remote-work arrangement with my employer...This was a blessing in disguise, as I was planning to quit by the end of 2016 anyway...but this newly-found freedom meant that I could basically be anywhere in the world while still earning a decent income, on the condition that I do a couple of hours of work every day and attend our quarterly board meeting in Yellowknife. With that in mind, I talked to my wife into realizing this dream of mine: to drive from Northern Canada to Patagonia via the Panamericana...so we quickly sold our Calgary place, moved a few things to a studio apartment we were renting after our renter left town, got rid of the car and almost all personal belongings and furniture, bought an older X-Terra, loaded our rooftop tent, packed a cooler, propane stove and a few other essentials, and left (cat included), with the goal of reaching Patagonia by December 2018...we are now in Mexico and our schedule was to cross from Panama to Columbia in March, but we fell in love with this culturally and geographically diverse country and decided to stick around at least for another year. Maybe more, who knows. Our plans are and have always been fluid, and the journey is more important than the destination.

We will be back to Calgary (and Yellowknife for a few weeks of work) in June to sell or rent our studio and put whatever we have left in storage. We should have done that in September but we were in a rush to leave before the snow...then we will take the road again in September. Stay tuned for updates!

I think we were very lucky. We had over 40 visits in three weeks which was encouraging, but no offer, and the responses were a bit disheartening..until we got one fairly decent offer which we countered. In the end, we settled for $10K less than asking price. We didn't make much profit, but we didn't lose anything...

And our agent went overboard to help us make the sale, even going as far as fixing creaking doors and other small repairs!

We might hold on to our East Village studio until the market rebounds, and rent it in the meantime.

Oh my goodness this sounds amazing!  Hubby and I were discussing something similar the other day - but we couldn't figure out who would want to take our kids for that long! ;)  I guess we will have to plan to take them, or wait until they leave home.

Are you documenting your journey in a blog or a journal here?  Would love to follow along.

Edit - and apologies for going off topic!

I don't know why I didn't see this post before! Just popped in to say I'm looking at buying some snow shoes, since it looks like there will be plenty of snow! It's supposed to warm back up by the end of the week, will be a perfect day for a trek I believe.

You're inspiring me to see if I can borrow or rent some snow shoes :)

Hi everyone.

Just wondering who will be joining us on Saturday for a snow shoe and/or walk? The weather is supposed to be above zero finally! and Sunny. I can bring my snow shoes and let someone borrow them and I can just wear my boots if they really want to snow shoe.

theres a place called rapid rent near heritage

I'm a 50/50 possibility. I would very much like to attend but being pregnant I have to go with the flow :/

I will update in this thread on Saturday morning when I have a better idea :)

Is this meetup still on? Last time I had a lot of fun with snowshoes, this time I don't think there will be any snow left if the weather forecast is correct. Saturday is supposed to be right balmy at 13 degrees!

Great, I was going to have to miss it anyway- this melt we are going through has brought some drainage issues to my attention. Home maintenance never ends!

New to the forum. Was wondering if a meetup is of interest to anyone? Would like to meet some like minded people.

Was also thinking of putting it out on R/FinancialIndependence subReddit.
