Hello -

I'm in Edmonton and my travel is largely confined to the local transit system, but I just wanted to say that it's nice to see some fellow Albertans kicking about the forums.

Hope the meetup(s) are fun for all involved!

Regards,

There's an Edmonton thread if you are interested in a Meetup here. 3 of us met up last time. It's always nice to have conversations with like minded people.

I'm tucked away in Canmore but could see myself attending if my schedule lines up as well. Unfortunately the Saturdays that everyone else has off most likely won't work for me. Another time, another day! Perhaps Sylvan Lake (Also happy to carpool with anyone from the city who is carless)

Thanks for the invite to this get-together. I haven't been on the forum for about six months so it might be the right time to update my friends here...unfortunately, I will not be able to attend this get-together, as I am presently very...hmmm...busy...

At the end of last summer, my Yellowknife position was downgraded to part-time, so I took this as an opportunity to negotiate a remote-work arrangement with my employer...This was a blessing in disguise, as I was planning to quit by the end of 2016 anyway...but this newly-found freedom meant that I could basically be anywhere in the world while still earning a decent income, on the condition that I do a couple of hours of work every day and attend our quarterly board meeting in Yellowknife. With that in mind, I talked to my wife into realizing this dream of mine: to drive from Northern Canada to Patagonia via the Panamericana...so we quickly sold our Calgary place, moved a few things to a studio apartment we were renting after our renter left town, got rid of the car and almost all personal belongings and furniture, bought an older X-Terra, loaded our rooftop tent, packed a cooler, propane stove and a few other essentials, and left (cat included), with the goal of reaching Patagonia by December 2018...we are now in Mexico and our schedule was to cross from Panama to Columbia in March, but we fell in love with this culturally and geographically diverse country and decided to stick around at least for another year. Maybe more, who knows. Our plans are and have always been fluid, and the journey is more important than the destination.

We will be back to Calgary (and Yellowknife for a few weeks of work) in June to sell or rent our studio and put whatever we have left in storage. We should have done that in September but we were in a rush to leave before the snow...then we will take the road again in September. Stay tuned for updates!

How much of a pain was selling your place in this market? I'm considering selling mine.

I think we were very lucky. We had over 40 visits in three weeks which was encouraging, but no offer, and the responses were a bit disheartening..until we got one fairly decent offer which we countered. In the end, we settled for $10K less than asking price. We didn't make much profit, but we didn't lose anything...

And our agent went overboard to help us make the sale, even going as far as fixing creaking doors and other small repairs!

We might hold on to our East Village studio until the market rebounds, and rent it in the meantime.

Oh my goodness this sounds amazing!  Hubby and I were discussing something similar the other day - but we couldn't figure out who would want to take our kids for that long! ;)  I guess we will have to plan to take them, or wait until they leave home.

Are you documenting your journey in a blog or a journal here?  Would love to follow along.

Edit - and apologies for going off topic!

Don't worry about the snow shoes guys! If you have ever been to nose hill park, you'll realize that you probably don't need any! Just bring your winter hiking shoes or boots and you should be good to go!

Don't back out on me now for not having snow shoes!! Haha. Its all good!

SOMETHING YOU GUYS MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT:
I have decided to start planning the first Annual Alberta mustache campout. It's going to be September long weekend this year at Jarvis Bay Provincial Park on Sylvan Lake. Great location between Calgary and Edmonton. Let's get the feeds coming!

I don't know why I didn't see this post before! Just popped in to say I'm looking at buying some snow shoes, since it looks like there will be plenty of snow! It's supposed to warm back up by the end of the week, will be a perfect day for a trek I believe.

You're inspiring me to see if I can borrow or rent some snow shoes :)

Hi everyone.

Just wondering who will be joining us on Saturday for a snow shoe and/or walk? The weather is supposed to be above zero finally! and Sunny. I can bring my snow shoes and let someone borrow them and I can just wear my boots if they really want to snow shoe.

theres a place called rapid rent near heritage

I'm a 50/50 possibility. I would very much like to attend but being pregnant I have to go with the flow :/

I will update in this thread on Saturday morning when I have a better idea :)

Is this meetup still on? Last time I had a lot of fun with snowshoes, this time I don't think there will be any snow left if the weather forecast is correct. Saturday is supposed to be right balmy at 13 degrees!

Great, I was going to have to miss it anyway- this melt we are going through has brought some drainage issues to my attention. Home maintenance never ends!

New to the forum. Was wondering if a meetup is of interest to anyone? Would like to meet some like minded people.

Was also thinking of putting it out on R/FinancialIndependence subReddit.
