[raises hand]

I am new to the MMM world (found the blog & forum via Frugal Dad last week). I'm intrigued by what I'm reading and think it'd be fun to get together with others in the Boston area...

Also interested!

Although it is not perfectly Mustachian, perhaps we should first plan to catch a drink at a local bar.  Cambridge Brewing Company in Cambridge is a favorite of mine (cambrew.com).  Once we are better acquainted, maybe we could host in-home.

So shall we pick a date? CBC sounds good to me...where it'll be easy for me to be Mustachian! (I'm 7 months pregnant so will be sticking to the water-like beverages on tap.) :)

Post by: velocistar237 on February 28, 2012, 06:33:35 AM
I like the idea of starting off with an easy, informal gathering, sooner rather than later to get the ball rolling. How about CBC this Saturday, 3/3, at 3pm until whenever? Later today, I'll PM my phone number to everyone who's responded to this thread. I will also post it over on the ERE forum.

Maybe later, bicycle or I can host a bigger gathering with Doodle poll scheduling and all that. If you can't make it this time, we can try to schedule around you for next time.

Five of us met for a couple of hours over beers, and it was a good time. Now is a fine time for another meet-up. I'll put together a plan in the next couple days. If you haven't already replied above, please put a post here to let me know you're interested. I'll give details by personal message.

Fellow Bostonians and New Englanders - My wife and I hope that you and yours are safe following yesterday's tragic events.

For those of us in the city, it was a startling revelation to see folks who should have been overjoyed - the marathoners and their families, as well as visitors celebrating Patriot's Day - were instead bewildered, heartbroken, and completely disoriented in a city that had just suffered a deep wound.

As a transplanted New Yorker and Washingtonian, I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of heroism and compassion that flowed from our community in a fashion similar to what we witnessed in NYC and DC those years ago. We saw that folks responded immediately - event participants, police, members of the national guard, EMTs - as the chaos ensued: running into the smoke instead of from it. And then we opened our veins and our doors to those who needed it, showing that we're a big town: not a faceless city.

Stay vigilant; stay safe.

I think I could host in Watertown.  I'm directly on the 70/70A bus route and about one very walkable mile from Watertown Square where there are other bus connections.  There is ample on-street parking in the area.  If there is an interest, I will start a 'when2meet' site with some dates and times for people to select from.

Hello tim_p.  I'm planning to provide some modest hors d'oeuvres and beverages and if people want to bring a small snack or drink, that would be great but not necessary.  But it's not going to be a lunch thing.

Hello bachi.  Please consider yourself 'signed up'.  (-:

Which brings me to a little pickle that I find myself in.  I don't have a way of knowing who you are if you didn't sign up with a distinctive MMM moniker name or haven't posted a reply here with a name that matches the one you used to sign up on the when2meet link.  So Nancy, Tim, Velocistar, PFGal, bachi and Tim - I know who you are.  Doing this for the first time, I did not think this part through so I'm going to need to ask the others of you to please PM me so I know who to send my location to.

In the meantime, anyone else who sees this and wants to join us, please sign up on http://www.when2meet.com/?1544646-xpywL and respond to this post or PM me.  I will send out my location to everyone next weekend by PM.

Looking forward to meeting you/seeing you again.

I saw that I just missed the last meet-up - how do people feel about picking a park and picnicking for the next one, now that the weather is improving? Maybe in May since you all got together just a few weeks ago?
Of course, in the US you can't drink in parks, so it couldn't be byob =(.

I would love to get information on the next meet-up. I have made some nice friends since moving to Arlington, but most of them think we're a little insane, especially for biking on Mass Ave or living with fewer bedrooms than we have children. I would love to chat about more Boston area frugal hacks - we're shocked at how expensive many things (like groceries) are here.

I hope everyone is enjoying our spring weather, and I hope to meet some of you soon.

As someone who can't bike due to disability, I'd vote for a picnic :) Maybe the Arboretum would be nice?

Or if someone has a yard and is willing to host us inside if it rains, that would be even better. Does anyone have a yard?

What about the weekend of June 14/15?  Can do it at our place if people don't mind blankets on the ground (or bringing their own folding chairs).  We haven't really gotten around to getting outdoor furniture yet.

ETA: Here's the most recent photo I have of the backyard, following our mid-April storm.  Or we can do it at Horn Pond, as I suggested above, with ours as a rain backup.

Thanks for the reminder re Father's Day - my family is postponing it this year so I forgot.  (We move around certain holidays when needed.)  The 14th then?  Sorry PFgal, I'm booked up on commitments, so unfortunately I wouldn't be able to host a different weekend until around August, though perhaps someone else can.  Or we could meet mid-week after work in the Commons perhaps?

Great, let's plan for the 14th then!

Just to clarify, the picture was actually from our backyard, not Horn Pond.  The two options were:
1. Horn Pond (rain out option our place, close to Horn Pond)
2. Our place

I'll PM everyone by this evening, and maybe get email addresses so we can take the conversation there to pick the best time (noon?) and place.

Have we decided on the time for our meetup?  The last I remembered was noon.  Is this correct?

Im very excited to meet people from the blog and share ideas!  Most of my friends/family either make and have lots of money and spend accordingly, or are in tons of debt and still go out to eat regularly.  I just found out one of my closest friends is $16,000 dollars in debt while making around 70,000/year!  We had just gone out to breakfast, which I had carefully adjusted my budget for, and I was shocked later to hear of her situation.

Can't wait to meet some like minded people.

Yes, I'm emailing out later today/tomorrow with more details.  Sorry for the delay!  I meant to do so this weekend but I got caught up with some other projects.

I had a request for earlier (due to a wedding) and a request for later (due to soccer), so I'm going to suggest we scoot it back to 11:30AM to try to accommodate both sides, but I'll put it in the email so that everyone can discuss it out there if they have additional comments.  I'm pretty flexible that day, so I can get there early and stay late to meet everyone.

Of course!  No formal catered affair with a head count here!  I envision this as being particularly low key...eat (BYOL), relax, chat, and those who want to stay longer can walk around the pond or go to the playground section with kids, or we can go partway around to a spot where there's more space for frisbee, etc.  You have my number, so you can always call or text me to see status too.

I've been keeping tabs on the weather and it looks like rain is threatening for our meetup tomorrow.  Rain location is my place.  We do have a very nice backyard if we guess wrong and it turns out nice, although no outdoor furniture (table/seating) be warned.  Will everyone get an email via MMM PM system if I sent out the location (with address, if needed) on Saturday morning around 9:30/10ish, or should we decide today?  I'll email to the same smaller set (about 12) I sent it to about a week and a half ago, so if you didn't get that, and want the update, make sure to let me know.

What's your risk tolerance for rain?  :)

How does kayaking or playing lawn games, followed by watching Raiders of the Lost Arc outside at North Point Park in Cambridge Wed Aug. 13th sound?

EF is hosting movie nights on Wednesdays in Boston.  I went last night to see Princess Bride and we had a great time.  Kayaking and lawn games start at 5:30.  Movie starts at 8ish, after it’s dark.  They have blankets if you don’t want to bring your own, and you can bring a picnic dinner.  I’m happy to give a quick 2 minute kayaking lesson if you want – I used to do whitewater kayaking.  More info: https://www.facebook.com/events/251265771749011/

Unfortunately, the EF event is held weather permitting, and it doesn't seem like our weather is cooperating today.  :(  Even if it stops raining (and my weather widget seems pretty convinced it'll keep on) the ground will be pretty wet for sitting on for a movie, so I think they'll cancel it even if they haven't yet.  Bummer, I was really looking forward to it!

I agree, it's been too long!  I hosted earlier this year, but my place is in a total state of disarray as I prepare to sell this spring.  Furniture is all in a pile in the center of the living room and dining room and the walls are stripped of wallpaper and need to be patched and painted.

Would love to join a meetup!  I'd have people over again, but I'm not too central so I'll defer to a more central location suggestion.

On other notes - does anyone want (an unopened box of) tinsel?  Fake candle lights for windows?  I'm in the throes of decluttering, and I'm pretty sure if we set it out the cat will eat the tinsel (it was from my single days).  If anyone wants any kitchen items (wine glasses to rolling pin) let me know as well...

Be great to see people and get out of the house for more than work+commute, but I am not so great about identifying low or no cost winter activities.  My ideas involve things like ice skating on the Common (not Frog Pond) which is pretty impossible now with the snow...

It's almost free entertainment time in the city - all the outdoor movies, concerts and plays you could want!  (I just looked and it doesn't appear that the schedules are up yet, but I anticipate they'll start around mid-June or mid-July, depending on the event.)

Until then, how about an MMM gathering?

Monday, June 1 dinner picnic after work in the Common or Park?  We had batted this idea about in the fall but I don't think it ever happened.

Are you suggesting more frequent gatherings? Cause that would be neat. The Summer after the Winter.

If so, we could generally drop the scheduling polls for the summer, and if someone can't make it to a few in a row, they could organize something themselves and use a poll.

I'm game for a dinner picnic.

I can't do June 1st, so you folks have fun with that.
But I would like to propose hosting a BBQ in my "drive-yard" on a weeknight in July (maybe a Wednesday or Thursday)?  My house is conveniently located 20 minutes walk from Harvard, Porter, or Inman Square's.  I have space for 10 people easy.  Does that sound compelling?

I can do any time after 5-ish, so 5:30 works for me.   "Common" definitely means Boston Common (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Boston+Common/@42.3550293,-71.0656252,17z).  I assumed "Park" to mean Norman B. Leventhal Park (http://www.normanbleventhalpark.org/index.html), a popular picnic area in Downtown Boston (CommonCents, please correct if I assumed incorrectly).

Between those choices, I'd rather meet on the Common, so we have the option to play frisbee or do other sports.

Sorry, I used the wrong term.  I meant Public Gardens versus Boston Common.  Both basically same location, just one offers more Frisbee options and the other more flower viewing options.  Common it is.

More frequent Boston events sounds awesome.

If some of the future dates are organized anytime on Saturdays, this may work best for those who commute from outside of Boston to attend.

Thanks for organizing this!

The prior two were on weekends, so I was angling for a midweek change up, thinking it might be easier for commuters.  More frequent events at different times will likely solve that problem.

On a very random note, any bakers coming to the June 1 event?  I have some sourdough starter that I can bring to share out if anyone wants to try it out.

Not interested in sourdough at the moment.   But, you remind me:

Anyone interested in kefir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kefir) grains?  They turn milk a low-lactose, mildly fuzzy drink.  Let me know now/soon, so I have time to grow enough to share.

Aehm, yes! But I won't make it to the meetup in Boston - I live close to Worcester and have a 3mo old baby.
Any chance I could pick up some grains? I'll be in Boston June 9th. Thanks!

Hey guys,

I'm relatively new to Boston and just stumbled on this thread.  Is it cool if I tag along?  I usually work until 6pm, but I can swing by the common shortly after work.  Where in the common are you planning on meeting?

Thanks!

Someone suggested another meetup on June 13. That's LGBT Pride in Boston, so if you do that, plan accordingly!

Now, as for 6/1, they're predicting rain. Does anyone have an indoor venue to suggest as an alternative, or should we just schedule it for another day?

Ugh, the rain derailed my Sunday gardening plans (although my decluttering efforts were fruitful instead).  I'm game for a reschedule rather than try to picnic in the rain.

Is the 13th set or can we r/s it?  We scheduled a meetup on the LGTB parade last year as I recall.

Instead of cancelling, can we find an indoor space to meet?

Some indoor spaces:
Boston Public Library
One of the many food courts around: City Place, Quincy Market, South Station, Museum of Science, Cambridgeside Galleria, Prudential Center(?)
A building atrium
A hotel lobby
Some area on an open-campus college, like MIT or Harvard, don't know about BU or Emerson

I'm not familiar with the library, so I suggest City Place (https://www.google.com/maps/place/City+Place/@42.3523882,-71.0658836,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89e37a76600ef77f:0xcf073e562a5f6c24?hl=en). It's just south of the Common, with an alleyway entrance across the street from the burial grounds.

CommonCents, what do you think?
Title: Re: Boston
Post by: CommonCents on June 01, 2015, 07:46:16 AM
I think I should have brought my dinner with me after all!

It's ok.  State transportation building?  I'm not sure of the hours, but there's a small food court downstairs where we could sit and chat, plus it's still close to Park Street for those on the red/green lines.  My office (I work for the state) holds public meetings in the rooms upstairs.  ETA: Google says hours till 8PM.  10 Park Plaza

I'd be happy to hang out in a hotel lobby, but I admit I'd feel odd having an indoor picnic at one.  I'd nix the Boston Library (a beautiful place though) because we probably shouldn't bring food or significant conversation there.

Anyone know an open building on Suffolk campus?  That's right downtown.

Go ahead and make the call. I'm fine with the State Transportation Building if you are. It's a bit late, but if you or someone else commits to meeting, I'll come. I also didn't bring dinner from home, but if it's in a food court, I'm fine with ordering something. Or, feel free to postpone, and next time, we'll plan a rain location.

If no one else responds yes (in which case I'll meet up) and you're really ok rescheduling - with a rain location, then I'd appreciate that.  I had a really emotional week last week, both ups and downs.  I'm worn out by everything.

I metioned up above that I'd like to host a outdoor grilling meet up at my place in Somerville not far from Havard Square.  Any interest in that this summer?

Also, Friday 7/24 is a good free event.  It's the Somerville Urban Campout.  Where you pitch a tent in Lincoln park and make smores/play games.

Sounds like at least several people would be interested in June 13th for reschedule.  There seems to be some preference for early afternoons as well.

Proposal: Saturday June 13th at 1pm MMM Boston area Meetup

velocistar237, would this work OK for you, or a better time on June 13th?  How about Able was I ERE?  If you can come, please post / re-post your interest.

Not from Boston myself, so not sure where we'd meet.  I'd be open to any location that day personally.  Indoor may provide a weather contingency.

That works for me. MIT's campus would work well if you don't mind hunting for parking, and there are plenty of indoor alternates there. Further out would be better for driving and parking, something like the park at Assembly Square. Or, you could team up with Thomas below if it works for him, though 1pm might not be the best time for a cookout. I'll think some more about it.

trobertson, a cookout in Somerville sounds great. Thanks for offering to host!

MIT would be a good location for a potluck- there are picnic tables in shade in front of the Student Center with green space for Frisbee (Kresge oval). We wouldn't have access to barbecue pits and wouldn't be able to drink alcohol without a permit, but  there are plenty of indoor spaces as well (open tables in Stata Center/Lobby 7/Student Center).

June 13th 1pm potluck sounds good to me.  I saw MIT/Assembly square thrown out as meeting points.  I also saw people liked the BBQ idea.  If it makes it easy, I'm happy to host on the 13th if people want to come this way (union square somerville).  I have parking for around 3-4 cars if need be.

When (if) you email me indicate if you would prefer MIT or my house at near Union/Inman.

I apologize for hijacking the thread, but I have a quick question that I feel a bunch of Massachusetts Mustacheans would be able to answer better than anyone. I don't want to derail the thread so if you could send me a message, I'd really appreciate it!

Does anyone know what the software job market is like in Boston? SO is heading to graduate school in a few weeks, and I'd like to avoid 5+ years of long distance. I've seen a lot of job postings, but I know there's a LOT of new grads coming out of MIT, Harvard, Boston College, Tufts, et cetera. I'm guessing there's huge competition for a lot of these jobs?

I can live pretty happily on a small budget, so even with the increased COL I'm not too concerned with getting a high salary, just a steady job where I can gain experience. I have 1 year of experience in .NET/c#, as well as a BS in math/minor in cs with good GPA (3.75).

Thanks guys! If all goes well, maybe I can come to the next meetup ;)

Yes, the software job market is hot in Boston.  For more opinions, see this thread from earlier this year: Tech workers in the Boston area (http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ask-a-mustachian/tech-workers-in-the-boston-area/).

On salary, don't sell yourself short---be sure to research (Glassdoor, etc) for the appropriate salary.  Boston is one of the highest paid markets for software engineers.

I'm so excited, I'm getting my first dog!!! Yay! But with a dog comes the need for dog supplies.

The way this works is, I'll meet the dog, and if we get along, I'll take her home with me that day. That means I can't buy a lot of what I need in advance, because if I don't adopt her, the dog I end up with might be a different size. I'm going to borrow a crate from my parents for a couple days and then order one online, but where should I get everything else: collar, id tags, leash, food, treats, a few toys..... any suggestions for a chain or a store local to the Somerville area? I know I'll have to lay out some money, and I'm ok with that (I've budgeted for it, of course,) but I don't want to overspend if I can help it.

Thanks!

(I might not be at this weekend's meetup - I'll be busy with dog prep!)

Hey all, do you want a great deal on an apartment in Davis Square? Or maybe you know someone who does? I'm moving to the suburbs and I'm looking for someone to take over my lease! I'm giving notice to my landlord on Monday - if no one shows interest before then, they'll be raising the rent a lot. Here are the basics, and I can definitely send photos if you're interested and you can come visit.

Large (700+ square feet) 1 bedroom
Corner unit - lots of windows
3rd floor, elevator, nice views
EIK with window
Laundry in Basement
3-4 minute walk to the T and Davis Square (https://goo.gl/maps/f41gHtUtwqM2)
Locked storage unit in basement
Only $1575 including heat!
Move in Dec 20 or later

Please spread the word! If anyone is interested, please email chocolateraindrops44@gmail.com

Hi, NestEggChick.

When I moved in August, I used these folks:

http://www.dnvanlines.com/

I found them to be extremely competent with helping me plan the move, and the young men who executed all the work were sweet, helpful, eager to do a good job, and just plain wonderful to work with.  I did not shop around and get lots of prices, however.  Once I spoke to the staff initially, I knew I wanted to work with them and didn't look any further.

Hope that helps.

I could use some help from mustachian-minded local folks. Sadly, I only have 1 pair of pants that fits, and that's just not enough. Does anyone have recommendations for a place to get inexpensive jeans? I'd like them to last a few seasons, but they don't need to be super sturdy - I'm sure I'll be a different size in a few years, anyway (which is why I only have the 1 pair right now.) I'm looking for low rise skinny jeans, probably a size 6 or 8. Thanks!

Thanks!

There is a Goodwill in Davis Square Somerville accessible by red line T. They have sales all the time like $1 for any item of clothing, but their regular prices are cheap anyway. I got a $1 pair of jeans there that I have been wearing daily ever since. They have a ton of womens' jeans in all sizes. The pair I bought were longs, which are hard to find in retail stores. Be prepared to spend some time hunting. The clothing is not sorted by size.

Did you end up using Ringplus and what is your experience? 275 minutes of sprint is quite a good deal for free. If you have internet at home, then you can probably use a separate VOIP for minutes and even SMS.

I use republic wireless, which also uses sprint when not on VOIP, and have not had any issue, so I imagine ringplus would be fine since it's also VOIP + sprint. I evaluated this option but thought that the ads might be distracting.

The group meets monthly, but arranges meet ups via the Google Group linked above.

I did sign up to be a member of the group. I'm new to forums and a total technophobe, so I'm not sure what happens next. Does my application need approval? Will I get an email?
Thanks!

Yes, the group is very active - - meetups about once / month. The Google group is used almost exclusively for coordinating the meetups.

Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to Boston (1 year) and recently found out about https://groups.google.com/d/forum/boston-mustachians. I'd love to meet up with some of you. How can I apply to join?

Hi, I've been lurking the forums for a while now and want to get more involved/meet up with like-minded individuals. I'm from west of the city, but can I also join this group?

Hey there, wondering how to apply or access the Google Groups for MMM meet-up in and around Boston?  The link a couple ppl posted on here gives you an error message.  Would love to make time to meet some MMMers IRL at an upcoming event. Thx!

The Google Group is still active. If the group link (https://groups.google.com/g/boston-mustachians) doesn't work for you, you can email the list owners:

boston-mustachians+owner <at> googlegroups <dot> com

Sorry for the late notice, but there is a meetup tomorrow, June 19, at noon at Duggar Park in Medford. We're meeting at the picnic tables next to the playground.

Google Groups changed their settings at some point, possibly over a year ago, and the new default value made the group not visible. Sorry about that. It's fixed now. I also added the group owner email to the top post of this thread in case you'd rather ask to join via email.
