Hi, I'll be moving to Tucson next month and would appreciate any tips & advice you can offer.

About me: Late twenties, I'll be earning 60k, office is downtown. I'm coming from the Bay Area and cannot believe how affordable the rent is. Do you suggest an apartment or renting a small house?

Hey, I came from the Bay Area also.

If you don't have strong objections to noise from neighbors, I recommend apartments for the shared walls if they cut down on electricity usage. For example, last summer I only used my AC a couple times and that was for my elderly dog. Otherwise, my place stays comfy since I'm surrounded by others who use a lot of AC. If you find a place with solar, I guess it wouldn't matter too much.
More importantly I find close neighbors a good way to meet people in a new place. They greatly increase the random but semi-regular crossing of paths.

One of the things I like about the desert is the slow growth rate of plants. So if you do get a house with a yard, it will require a lot less time to maintain compared to wild green things in the Bay Area.

If you like to walk and/or bike, I recommend looking for places near the bike avenues and/or paths along the rivers.
