Anyone in Dublin?
« on: December 30, 2014, 03:41:44 PM »
Hi,

Anyone here from Dublin, Ireland? Myself and a friend who got me into this blog are going to have a couple of drinks to discuss it sometime in January. If there are any other budding Mustachians around in Dublin it would be cool to meet up. Details to follow if anyone is around.

If I were young and single, Dublin would be a regular stop for me. I had a great vacation there recently. What a fun city! Erin go bragh!

Hi, I'm in Glasgow and too tight to come over and join yous! but keen to hear how you get on so do get in touch. Do you jump to and fro over the border to get the best bargains?

Wishing you a prosperous new year, R

I live near the border so it's easy to nip over for bargains, eg heating oil(delivered in a van), coal, and other stuff. Sterling exchange rate is a killer a lot of the time though. Cars are cheaper if you're a cash buyer, even with import tax and currency difference.

Hi,

I assumed I'd get an e-mail when someone replied here so didn't check - apologies.
I have just received a message from another user who has not posted here suggesting a meet up. With ausername, the user I've mentioned and a friend of mine and his brother who are interested there could be a quorum for a Dublin meet up I think! I'll try and organise and will post details back here if I can find a mutually suitable date. At the moment I'm thinking Wednesday Feb 4th but I'll confirm later.

I'd love an online resource where we could discuss some ireland-specific stuff, as our investment options are very different from those available in the US or even UK. Is anyone else interested?

Post any investment queries on here and I will try and help.
We like to keep it at fund / etf level, staying true to permanent portfolio & Boglehead investing principles.

Hello fellow Irish Mustachians,

I have just joined the forum and would be interested in sharing ideas from an Irish perspective.

Is there a separate thread for Ireland anywhere?

Keep me posted if there is another meet-up planned in Dublin!

Hi All,

I'm gonna try organise another Mustachian Meetup in Dublin, the first one went well in my opinion - just 5 of us but a very interesting discussion.
The proposed date is Tuesday December 8th, just waiting on the other people who went the last time to advise if they can make it - will post here if that changes.
We met in the Gingerman pub on Merrion Row last time - for now I would propose to meet there again from 7 that evening.

Colm.

Yeah, it's going ahead.
At least 4 of the 5 who attended the first time can make it and any others welcome.
We'll probably start from 6:30 in the Gingerman though I may be there even earlier, I'm not a believer in presenteeism at work.

Wow, talk about timing. Was just reading the comments of a post and thinking how cool it is for all the various mustachians around the US to have get-togethers but none in Ireland, turns out I needn't feel jealous.

Anyways, if there's another meet up I'd also be dead keen on heading along.

Thanks,
Terry

CONOR MCGREGOR!!

If I come to Dublin for a vacation could we possibly to an MMM meetup? A friend of mine spent a few days there and gave us rave reviews. Makes me want to see Dublin and the surrounding country.

Great to see an Irish 'wing' of MMM. Just joined the forum. I live in Louth but would be happy to travel to Dublin for a meetup. Hopefully we can use this forum to share ideas/tips/recommendations etc. Any get-togethers soon, please let me know.

Hi there,

With a little luck, you guys are still actively lurking around here and mustaching away. I've been blog binge-ing on the main website for the last three weeks and have started doing a little homework in how to get ahead here in Ireland. I'd be keen to share ideas and figure out what options are available to us.

Hi All,

I've only been checking this forum sporadically but it seems there are a few people who would be on for another Irish Mustachian meetup.
How about Tuesday 6th September in the Gingerman pub from 6 o clock? Open to alternative venue suggestions also.

It's been suggested that meeting in a pub is not very Mustachian - so as a compromise we're going to try find the place with the cheapest pint in Dublin city centre. Suggestions welcome and we'll decide the venue at least a few days in advance. Sep 6th still the proposed date.

I'm pretty sure there's a post on the website allowing a cheeky beverage once in a while. This is probably my outing for the month though so I'll just go with it. After all, there's no justification like self-justification!

But to get back on topic, this very problem has been looked at in the past: https://lovindublin.com/dublin/some-absolute-legend-made-this-list-of-the-cheapest-places-to-drink-in-dublin-by-the-day

It's a year old, but likely still valid.

Would Thursday September 8th suit instead? Myself and 2 friends would be able to attend then. O'Reillys on Tara Street is now the suggested venue, hoping they still do the €3.20 pints!

Hi Lads, good to meet you all in person there last week. It's nice to feel that while still technically a societal outlier, I'm not a complete oddball for living this way!  There were quite a few interesting things discussed so I hope someone took notes, there are a couple of bits I'd like to follow up on.

https://www.degiro.ie/ seems to be the cheapest execution-only stockbroker, Dutch-based, but relatively new so people are skeptical about them as a company. More established providers include https://www.rabodirect.ie/investments/default.aspx, https://www.td.com/ca/products-services/investing/td-direct-investing/trading-platforms/webbroker/, and http://www.davy.ie/. I've also just heard about https://rubicoin.com/ but they seem to only operate through an iPhone app. Dunno what that's all about. DeGiro does a fee comparison on their website, but an independent check on this is probably worthwhile

My current employer pension is in a 'balanced' portfolio from which the provider take 1.5% per annum. The same provider has a 'self-directed' pension as an option, so if there is a way to put the minimum amount into the standard pot to get the employer match and put the balance to the tax-free max (that's combined, IrishCol ;) ) into a lower cost one I can direct then that sounds like a better option. Anyone know of the mechanics of this? I'm all theoried out, I need some actionable tasks and the confidence to know I'm not somehow hamstringing myself!

There was also talk on electric bike kits, short rotation coppice willow, solar PV & solar heating, the amount of stuff you don't need for a baby, and some other bits and bobs I'm sure I'm forgetting.

My main struggle is figuring out the tax situation for the various investment options  - dividends, ETFs domiciled in various places, keeping tabs on monthly installments to cope with the 8-year nonsense. I'm sure all the information is available, I just can't get on top of it. Guidance will be gratefully received!

Until next time then...

Good to meet you too POD.
Thanks for the stockbroker list, I will look into DeGiro.
Just to let you know, we looked at the employee v employer contributions and are now of the opinion that the 20% is employee only. If you can find a link that shows otherwise please share but my defined contribution plan and one of the other guys' one both state that it is employee only.
Yeah the 8 year rule is a massive pain, I know Rabo to a tax aid which is handy though not always 100% reliable (if funds merge or something like that).

I can't remember if I (or someone else) already mentioned it or if you're aware of it but http://www.askaboutmoney.com/ is a very good website for Irish financial issues. First place I ever saw a discussion about the whether VHI was worth it or not (back in the days when VHI was the only private insurance available) and the actual financial reasonaing behind investing the same amount as it would cost for a standard plan and how likely it was that that would actually give you enough money to deal with any serious illness if it happened. It's not necessarily always very mustachian but some very savvy people there that might have good advice in relation to tax, pensions etc. Haven't spent much time there in the last couple of years but I assume it's still pretty good.

Further research - mainly an email to the guy that administers the company pension scheme - confirms that the 20% is employee only. I must have got confuzzled with the PRSAs or something. Anyway, I also learned that I can back-date my contributions to be as if I had maxed it out for the last couple of years and claim the tax relief on that too. So I drop a lump sum into my pension now, and get tax back in cash now. Also, I saw the performance graph for the pension and over the last 18 months it took a dive and then recovered to the starting point so I think I've got the best of both worlds with that one. Too good to be true? What am I missing!?

@Moonwaves, I've been keeping an eye on AAM lately, there's a lot of content all right, and many discussions get off topic pretty quick. It's difficult to figure out the best advice to follow though as lots of the contributors seem to know what they're on about but have polar opposite points of view: max out a pension scheme or avoid it altogether, definitely pay down the mortgage first or take advantage of the cheap credit, private health insurance is essential but also not to be touched as you often end up in the public sphere anyway.... my poor brain-hole!!

Who's got the details for the electric bike kits, I'd like to follow that line of enquiry up next?

LOL Glad I'm not the only one who ends up feeling like that. MMM often makes me feel that way, too, although perhaps there's slightly more consensus on some of the basics here, I suppose.

Greetings fellow Dubstachians, as expected a fine evening's discourse was had by all. I've a couple of notes and leads below but due to the notorious 'hitting-close-before-hitting-save' and 'stoopid-low-battery' situations, I'm definitely missing out on some info so please add, elaborate and otherwise comment. Mainly this is to serve as reference point for myself for when I get distracted by something shiny for a couple of weeks and forget what I was supposed to follow up on.

Food is a great way to save on money, as all the best stuff isn't processed and therefore cheaper. Especially if you haul it out of your own container garden/raised bed allotment/rolling acreage. If your primary focus is to save money, then grow things that are expensive to buy, like herbs and salads (lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers etc). With a greenhouse/polytunnel you can grow more exotic things, and extend the growing season for native things. I get regularly inspired by this https://www.amazon.com/New-Complete-Book-Self-Sufficiency-Realists/dp/0751364428. But I then couple that with the meticulous accounting of Charles Dowding (http://www.charlesdowding.co.uk/) who doesn't waste time with incorrect common knowledge, such as digging over a bed in the first place. I also read this blog (https://oldworldgardenfarms.com/) but need to adjust the location-specific information. Actually, occasionally I get irritated by this one, but I think that's mostly because I get jealous of what they've got and how they did it. They don't refer to FI directly, but are living that way anyway by growing almost all their own food, pursuing a simpler and happier existence, and having just downsized to a comfortable house on the same land. Lots of DIY, recipes, ideas and philosophy. But it also makes me feel inadequate as a human. Oh well, I can hardly blame them for that part!!

Related to the above, http://cabinpeople.com/ was mentioned, including their YouTubes starting here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OGUP_302bY . Also for further investigation is to be done on  http://croninsyard.com/facilities-pods/

One of my other favourite blogs is http://www.1500days.com/. Admittedly, they do START with half a million in the bank, but I find the writing very real and easy to relate to. The 1500 Days to Freedom are up, they achieved their goal, but are keeping the blog going anyway.

I was diverted from trying to electrify a fold-up bike to squeeze onto the trams, as at commuter o'clock I'd have small hope of fitting in there. The investigation continues.

Likely in the next 2-5 years one of the diesel cars will become electric, especially with our Dear Leaders planning on increasing the tax on that fuel. I may tie this in with installing solar PV; I'll need to do some GreenMohawkian calcs to fine-tune the details.

I need to follow up with Revenue on the medical claims I didn't know I was entitled to.

There was a mention also of a place in BallySomewhere which sells off display models of electrical appliances. Unfortunately, this is around the point I was showing off my GoogleForms on my phone to input data for car mileage and utilities usage and forgot to save the notes thus far. Can someone else chip in here?

My plans for actually trying to buy funds/shares etc have now been pushed out from this year to at least 5 years or more from now. The pension is maxxed out and instead we will push any surplus money into the mortgage, and investing in 'real' things such as refurbing the house including a rentable-outable space, roof insulation, windows, solar PV, an electric car, rainwater harvesting (http://www.sturdyproducts.ie/products/rainwater-harvesting-system/rainwater-harvesting-system/hydro-store-rainwater-harvesting-system), and whatever else I can think of to make our living as sustainable as possible. Actually, there could be closer to a decade of money and effort going in to that list so I might just forget about stocks etc for a long time.

The next decision I have to make is whether to continue cruising in my current employment, where the money is OK but the work not that interesting and opportunities for progress unclear, or to retrain with an industry cert, probably take a pay-cut for a year or two while I learn the ropes but hopefully with a view to doing something I'm more interested in and with a big organisation with scope for advancement.

I have concerns around the ethics of the companies we could be invested in in a generic fund. Yes, we get to maximise our money because other people are stupid with theirs, but I still don't necessarily want to support the marketing campaigns of oil/tobacco/processed foods companies to sell to those silly people. The whole point is to improve the world and reduce waste, so I'd rather be involved with businesses hat promote that. So the (financial) returns aren't as good, but the real world returns would be, and we can sleep easier knowing we're not exploiting the uninitiated. To do that we probably need to hand-pick the companies we like rather than buy an ETF which is a lot more work but there we are.

OK, soap-box rant over, and that last paragraph is mostly academic anyway while we put all the other bits mentioned above into practice. Until next time....

Hello irish mustachians!
We're Emma (from Scotland) and Robert (from Romania).
Hope to see some irish people  at the Financial Independence Week Europe (FIWE) in Timisoara which we're organising in September.
Apply as long as there are spaces left.
It's going to be a non-commercial fun event to meet like-minded people, eat some local food, dring some local alcohol and most importantly: talk, talk, talk :)

All details here: http://whatlifecouldbe.eu/fiwe/

Cheers
