Kriegsspiel - Let us know when you get here and we can plan something. You'll be pretty far north and JohnGalt is sort of westish. SavingMom and I are in the same general vicinity. I'll have to google everyone's locations and then we can find somewhere centrally located.

SavingMom, if it doesn't worry you (I promise, we aren't psychopaths), we can carpool.

I am off PGBT between DNT and 35E. I would love to have a meetup interfacing fans with skeptics :) I've just cancelled cable but am tied to $70 Internet. Any suggestions? I have made a one year plan to pay off all debt, followed by a three year plan to pay off our primary residence, followed by saving for a long term home when this one becomes a rental, followed by saving for financial freedom! Has anyone around Dallas been practicing baddassity? I know I have a bike and a trailer coming from family for Christmas! I also coupon now and that can be satisfying. Of course, I hear the voice of MM telling me im am idiot whenever I drive to a store to "save" money.

Okay, not sure how to do this. If you're interested in meeting up, please PM me with either your email address or cell phone number and we can communicate about details as a group. We're spread out geographically, so we'll need to identify a location that isn't too far for any one person.

Glad I'm not too late to get in on this!

In addition to a potential meet-up I'm also looking to move someplace a little cheaper in the coming months.

Anyone who knows of affordable rental property near Addison available in June- I'd love to connect with you!

We will have be a total of 2 of us or 4 looking, depending on what's offered.

Our house is mid Reno but if you can live looking at a half a kitchen we're happy to host. We could do a potluck. Expecting to put the house on the market in July.

Anyone got a referral for someone who can paint the exterior of the house and some interior paint?

I figure if no one starts setting a date, it'll never happen. So let's do this!

What are your thoughts on May 30th or June 6th? Hopefully at least with a Saturday (or Sunday), we can avoid the monstrous traffic during the week. No matter where we meet up, a few people will be driving pretty far.

Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: Philociraptor on May 01, 2015, 07:21:47 AM
I believe both those dates are wide open for me, not sure if my wife would be interested in meeting a bunch of other folks interested in FIRE, but you never know. Perhaps we could meet up at Mike Lewis Park or somewhere similar (midway between Dallas and Ft. Worth).
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: DeepEllumStache on May 01, 2015, 04:19:25 PM
So pot luck in Mike Lewis Park in Grand Prairie. Dates are still open for either on May 30 or June 6.

Lunch, late lunch, or dinner? Obviously it'll be getting hot, but since we're in Texas that's a given. Do they have covered picnic tables?
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: chasesfish on May 01, 2015, 07:55:47 PM
I'd be in for this - June 6th works for us, I'm out of town the weekend before
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: PathtoFIRE on May 02, 2015, 07:30:00 AM
Maybe it's too late but I'd like to vote for Reverchon Park, it's just off the Katy trail, close to Victory station and the green, orange, and TRE lines, it has lots of shade and tables, covered playground. If not this time, maybe the next meetup.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: DeepEllumStache on May 05, 2015, 03:50:08 PM
Does Reverchon have parking for those who can't take the DART/TRE?

Sounds like June 6th is our winning date!
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: chasesfish on May 05, 2015, 06:31:34 PM
Yes, both a few spots at the ball-field and plenty of street parking along the two cross streets.  I tried to go down there to check out parking along the Katy Trail, but haven't run it yet.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: PathtoFIRE on May 05, 2015, 07:48:23 PM
Yes, there are a few spots by the playground/tables, a long drive that people park along, and then quite a few spots behind the baseball diamond. I've never driven, and I've typically always gone on Saturday morning with the kids by bike, and it's not been crowded, but I can't say what it's like at other times on Saturdays.

Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: DeepEllumStache on May 15, 2015, 03:34:02 PM
Dallas Meetup:

Date: Saturday, June 6
Location: Mike Lewis Park or Reverchon Park
Time: 1 pm (unless someone wants to vote differently)

I personally vote for Reverchon, but that's because it's closer to me and I like the riding the DART option.

How does everyone else vote on location and time?
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: PathtoFIRE on May 15, 2015, 04:42:36 PM
Time: perfect
Date: should be good
Location: I vote Reverchon, but would be fine with Mike Lewis if that means more ppl can come

On a side note, Uptown Ciclovia is tomorrow, May 17th. This would be a great event to have a meetup for next year. I don't think I'll actually make it to this years between DW's schedule and the weather.

Hi everyone - I live in Mesquite and would love to attend a meet-up. Mike Lewis park on 6/6 at 1pm seems OK to me.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: DeepEllumStache on May 30, 2015, 05:23:58 PM
So sounds like Mike Lewis at least for next Saturday. Obviously we need to bump this up...

Dallas Meetup:

Date: Saturday, June 6
Location: Mike Lewis Park
Time: 1 pm

Anyone more familiar with Mike Lewis Park want to set up a meeting place? We could technically run around yelling "Mustache!" in a Marco Polo type game but it's probably not very efficient.

Do we want to coordinate hamburger stuff for grilling? Or just bring food?

If the rain keeps up, we can float over to a nearby restaurant.

Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: Philociraptor on June 01, 2015, 09:47:38 AM
I'll be there. I've only been a couple times, but I know that there are some picnic tables near the back by the sand volleyball courts; I'll bring a ball and maybe a frisbee if I can find them. I plan on bringing a small cooler with adult beverages as well. As far as bbq vs. BYOF, I'm strongly averse to grilling on those built-ins that parks have, and my car won't fit my Weber, so I'll either eat before or bring some food.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: DeepEllumStache on June 01, 2015, 10:38:22 AM
Sounds good. Everyone bring food then.

Aim in the general direction of the picnic tables by the sand volleyball court.

There is parking back there too. I'll have a cooler with ice in it if anybody wants to bring beverages straight from the store and store them while we're out there. Wife will join me if we finish food prep by 12:30.

Was really looking forward to this, but I can't make it after all. Been trying to plan a trip down to Big Bend National Park for camping and biking, and this weekend (5th thru 7th) is the only one my buddies and I are able to coordinate.

Have fun, all! I'll see you at the next one. Hopefully there will be another meetup soon. Maybe there could be a mountain bike meetup at one of the many trails around Dallas?

Hey DFW'rs, let's do a meetup if you're free -

When: 9/19 at 7 pm
Where Jeng Chi (http://jengchirestaurant.com/) Restaurant in Richardson

Reply if you're in.

Can we get a rough count of who will be going? I can call the restaurant and let them know if we have a large group.

So far I see:

DeepEllumStache (Verified)
Thinkum +1 (Verified)
Blub +1 (Verified)
Philociraptor +1 (Verified)
ThinSlicer (Verified)
LDoon
chasesfish
PathtoFIRE (Verified)
clarkevii (Verified)
TexasBrit (Verified)
Rutes (Verified)
Uturn (Verified)

That is 11 people, so before I call to let them know about a big group, please verify that you'll be attending this Saturday.

Thanks!

It was really nice meeting everyone as well. It was unfortunate the restaurant couldn't simply slide some tables together. We had mentioned maybe doing another meetup at a park or something, then I had brought up the Aurora show in downtown Dallas. This might be a good venue to chill out on a nice autumn evening. http://dallasaurora.com/ (http://dallasaurora.com/)

The kiddie table was excellent. We definitely need to meet up more often.

I'm a fan of anything close to downtown :)

Depending on how early we meet up, there are a few streets that have free street parking in Deep Ellum for those that can't ride DART downtown.

No meet up spot or time quite yet. I'm trying to get a consensus and see where that leads to. 8PM sounds fine to me though. As for the place to meet up, we should pick a corner like Peal & Ross or something.

Plano here - I saw 6 or 7 others on the first pages. Question for them: what is the cheapest internet-only service you have found? Seems TWC and VZN are the only options here, and I pay TWC almost $60. It's fast (130+dl/23ul) but I'm ok reducing. Thanks!

Our neighborhood only has VZ I believe. Not sure if TWC are available, but never liked them, too many bad stories from where I used to live in CA. We use VZ and got a 2yr deal of $42/month for 25MB or so. Internet only. VZ has been the best provider that I can remember, CA included. Once the contract is up, it is supposed to go up to about $65 or so. I will of course call and try to get it reduced, we'll see how that goes.

Thanks! I am overdue on making my calls.

Because I assume I'll always be on the provider changing carousel, I've never bought and used my own router, always paying that monthly fee.  Thoughts/advice?
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: Thinkum on March 21, 2016, 08:13:13 AM
While in CA, we had local monopolies, so there was very little choice and the providers knew it. In that case, it made sense and we bought our own router since they charged a monthly fee.

Since VZ has been really good thus far, if it does go up to $65, I might be able to get it down lower. Even if not, I/we will most likely just stick with them. I have noticed that internet only is more expensive in the Dallas area. VZ includes the wireless router with no additional monthly charge.

This is advice from a network security geek from an ISP:  I think it is always correct to be the one responsible for the security on your network.  I think it's a bad idea for the ISP to have full access to your network.  (I also think it's a bad idea from a liability standpoint on the ISP side.)  It's also a bad idea to have the ISP provide wireless.  The wireless secret is, more often than not, a non-random calculated secret that could be guessed with a little bit of effort.

You can always get a generic firewall that uses wired ethernet for the external interface.  Have them provide you with the lowest amount of services on the router -- connectivity only.  No wireless, no firewall.

I avoid Dallas like the plague. I had to drive from Saginaw to Love Field on Tuesday. It took 1 hr and 40 mins.  I was having flashbacks to when I lived in Seattle. I don't know how people do that every day. So many people cutting me off, not letting me in, no blinkers, heavy acceleration followed by slamming on the brakes. Fort Worth just feels like a really big small town to me. Granted, that I35 & 820 construction has been ridiculous. They built the Sears tower in less time than they've taken on those projects!

Wylie here, we just moved out to the suburbs from an apartment in Dallas. Being a Mustachian in Dallas is kind of amusing observing people as they bury themselves in debt for Mercedes, McMansions and overpriced dinners at trendy restaurants (Uptown "30K millionaires")...

We would definitely be interested in a get together with other DFW members!

Plano here - I saw 6 or 7 others on the first pages. Question for them: what is the cheapest internet-only service you have found? Seems TWC and VZN are the only options here, and I pay TWC almost $60. It's fast (130+dl/23ul) but I'm ok reducing. Thanks!

My wife and I had the TWC $15/month plan for 2 years and we loved it, even streamed HD Netflix (not 4K). The download speed is 3mbps. The trick to being able to stream video on a "slow" connection without buffering issues is to set up your network so that bandwidth priority goes to your streaming devices. This is called QoS (quality of service).

The way we have it set up is we bought a router (never lease a modem or router from your internet company, it's a waste of money) that we could install aftermarket software DD-WRT on. The QoS settings dictate that our playstation and TV streaming devices have priority when they need it and all other devices share something like 5% of bandwidth in that case. That way when your phone starts updating Facebook or pinging an email server, it doesn't hog up all the bandwidth and cause your video to lag. During the times when you're not streaming video, all devices will get the bandwidth they need.

We're now on the $35 TWC plan for 50mbps and the only reason we upgraded is so that we could stream Netflix in 4K. It works perfectly.

I vote for A.

Jeng Chi is a favorite spot of mine since the last meetup there. It is reasonable and it is big place that should be slow on a Saturday afternoon. We won't be rushed out.

My only other suggestion for location would be a bar like place for brews such as Fox and the Hound (Campbell and 75) or even Flying Saucer on the Lake in Garland.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: Thinkum on July 16, 2016, 02:58:03 PM
I too vote A, lunch is a better bet. I also echo what Clarkevii said about perhaps a brewpub. A good place I just discovered today is Intrinsic BBQ and Brewery in downtown Garland. Laid back area, nice venue, great food and drink, at a reasonable price.
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?
Post by: clarkevii on July 16, 2016, 03:59:41 PM
Intrinsic is a solid choice. Craft brews and you can also buy 32oz beers for about $7... So not too bad on value :) I've been there and they have a nice courtyard. The place has a has a good vibe.

The only reason why I didn't mention it is because it isn't directly off a highway. I know some people come out from Fort Worth side and both Jeng Chi and Intrinisic are in my backyard.... So I'll punt my opinion to the travelers.

Long time MMM reader living in N Fort Worth... Wish I would have looked for this a long time ago (been here for 6 years now)... but alas, I must move to the promised land, yes, that land approx 15 miles south of Longmont, CO, where I can live in the wise ones shadow.  JK, but seriously, I am moving to Denver area and wish I could have met some of you people before this, I'll be gone by the end of March.  You guys all take care and keep the FIRE dream alive!

Dude, good for you. DFW sucks for recreational activities unless you like going to malls and restaurants all the time. Getting a house in the mountains west of Denver/Boulder is our FI/RE plan.

So 1 vote for 3/25, 1 for 4/15, 2 votes for either, and 1 vote to FIRE in Colorado.

I probably should have also asked for location preferences. We're in east Dallas

I'd love to have a DFW meetup on the Ft. Worth side of town.  Perhaps at one of the many amazing parks out here in the vastness of mid-cities suburbia.  Any interests?  There are a few options with some shade and near the cotton belt trail bike path.  Perhaps Northfield park or McPherson Park?  Many very nice public space options in Grapevine/Southlake/Keller area as well.  The green space behind Keller Town Hall is great for hiking and biking.

*Internet fist bump to the Lakewood-based NAEByrd85*

Alrighty Mustachians, I feel the urge to organize people again.

If we're going to be meeting up at a brewery or something indoors, August is a workable timeframe (the Saturdays are the 12th, 19th, and 26th). If we want to do anything outside, let's meet up at 8 am or save it for the fall when it isn't disgustingly hot (early October?)

Is there a good mid-cities brewery you'd recommend chasesfish (or anyone else)?

For the sake of planning, here's the places we've been or have been recommended -

Dallas and East - the center of the world according to anyone from Dallas:
Dallas: Margaret Hunt Bridge/Trinity Groves (walking around, some kid friendly options, semi-outdoor/indoor), Henk's/Half Price Books visit (German food, 75 and Hwy 12, pure indoor)
Garland: Intrinsic BBQ and Brewery (BBQ, indoor)

North - don't miss your exit or you end up in Oklahoma:
Richardson: Jeng Chi (Chinese food, indoor)

Mid-cities - somewhere in between and closer to the airport:
Grapevine: green space behind Keller Town Hall (outdoor biking/hiking), Northfield or McPherson Park (biking/hiking)

Fort Worth and West - better than Dallas according to anyone from Fort Worth
<needs suggestions>

Feel free to add to this list.

I'll be moving (with my wife) to Dallas in 2 months.  Any recommendations on good, affordable and safe locales in the area?  I'm open to anywhere really (I've looked at /considered Plano, Carrollton, and Oak Lawn).  I'd also like somewhere that is close to grocery stores and as bike-able as possible.  For groceries, that means Aldi and Asian grocery stores (H-Mart comes to mind).

Eventually, I hope to meet some of the folks here.

I would recommend locating near the DART rail.  As for as bike-able as possible, this is highly dependent on work location.  Richardson is ranked high for bikers.  It is pretty hard to find somewhere that is not in biking distance to a grocery store.  Plano has some good Asian markets near 75 and Legacy.

http://www.bikedfw.org/dfw-area-bike-trails.html (http://www.bikedfw.org/dfw-area-bike-trails.html)

These are pretty generic criteria.  You might add some more criteria (general work location) and start a new thread.

-Edit-
I just saw your FIRE countdown, so I guess work isn't an issue.

Most importantly, where will you work?  That's the #1 determining factor for me in where to live.  Life's too short to sit in rush hour traffic
Title: Re: Anyone in Dallas?

Thanks for the tips.  I'll look into Richardson.

Yep, I'll be FIRE/semi-FIRE for a while (going to try it out for a year at least if not longer), so I'm ultra flexible with area.  We picked Dallas area because its larger size (more amenities, larger airport), decent COL, and has lots of things that we like to do close by - I especially love all of the Asian food choices.

Our current plan is that come mid-October about, we'll to live out of an AirBNB for a few weeks while we find a place to rent.  I know it's a big place and my criteria doesn't narrow down things much but really a general idea of areas to avoid would be helpful.

Not sure if you are still looking for options. I live in Oak Lawn and didn't have a car for a year (rambling side story as to why I did purchase a lovely used one).  DART in the area is nice, but if you won't be working I'm not sure the cost off-set of rent in this 'hood would be worth while. Happy to help with other questions.

Also wanted to add: check out a neighborhood in Dallas called "Little Forest Hills".  It's an affordable place to live but also a very artsy and laid back community. It's an older neighborhood with beautiful old trees and old homes. It's a unique place.

Oooh.  This is the first I've heard about this.

Have you been to this event before?  What's it like?

My SO is busy that morning, so if I go I'd be attending by myself.  If it's a pleasant, laid-back, chill event, I'd consider going by myself.  If it's a bit of a chaotic clusterfuck, I might just save the money and hassle.  I can always go riding some other time.

I'd be open to chilling at the public party though if there is significant interest.

Hi, replying because I like meetups. Don't know if I can attend on the 4th, though. I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather (finally)!

I was doing Royse City to North Dallas and had to move closer.  There is no way I could do Rockwall to Fort Worth.

I'll be in Dallas for work 9th to the 14th. I get in around 2 PM on Sunday and have the whole afternoon/evening free if anyone is around?

Also happy to meet up for drinks/dinner near Addison any night Mon-Thurs.......I'm normal in person, I swear ;)

Sunday evening works for me and is easier to reach the Addison area than a weekday.

Any Addison knowledgable people have suggestions on locations?

@DeepEllumStache, that's awesome! If it helps, I'm willing to Uber within reason, or if anyone has a car =p

Really looking forward to meeting some of you.

Fan of Sunday here as well, Addison is quite a hike from south Grand Prairie and I spend 90-120 minutes at the gym M/T/Th/F.

I work in Addison and would be available to do a happy hour type thing after work. Sunday, probably not...wouldn't really want to drive over here and football, ya know. As for suggestions of places, whether I go or not...

Chuy's (free nacho bar thingy for HH, just buy cheap margaritas)
Houlihan's
Torchy's
Flying Saucer
Blue Mesa
Pluckers

Following - I work in/near Addison, next week's work calendar is a bit of a train wreck but will see what I can do.  Wednesday/Thursday are more promising.

I should be available on Sunday evening, after 5pm, and would vote for Flying Saucer although the other mentions work too (I believe Chuy's free queso bar is just weekdays, at least that's the case for the one on Knox). Also can drive/carpool with anyone if needed between uptown/park cities and Addison.

Sounds like a plan for Team Sunday. Flying Saucer, do we want to do 5pm or 6?

PtF - Himself and I would be up for a carpool.

Hey guys. I am thinking about popping the ? soon and I thought I'd come here for Dallas-specific advice. Does anyone have a Ring Guy that is the absolute best? Keep in mind that we'll be keeping the ring modest. I already had that convo with her, and we're on the same page. So, I'd need a dealer or retailer that's not going to ignore what I'm saying or try to upsell me into something I don't want. If you're curious for more details about our situation, I posted it in the recent engagement ring thread:

Sorry, I'm allergic to marriage, so no ring guy to recommend, but good luck with the proposal! Just dont do it publicly which puts her on the spot. :)

I read your thread.  If you are going to involve your significant other in the search, do you want to go ahead and ask her how much she's comfortable with you spending?

I bought used for just over $500 in 2003.  Wife and I are still happily married.  She practiced as a veterinarian and a bigger/gaudier ring would have gotten in the way of her work.   I agree with the threads of buy used or buy on the low end from Costco.
