Anyone else trying to grow a mustache in Brooklyn / NYC?
« on: September 07, 2012, 12:40:00 PM »
I've been mildly frugal for most of my adult life, but let those muscles get flabby when we had 2 children - looking for local people trying to get to the next level to hang out and talk about how to really live on the cheap in one of the greatest, and most expensive, cities in the world.

I'm in Brooklyn. Was doing well at growing a well groomed mustache, shaved it all off and am trying again. I'd love to get together and hang out/chat.

C,

Let's give it a try! I'm open as far as schedule and location - what works well for you? I work a regular weekday job, with weekday hours, and live on the south end of Prospect Park. We could meet in a public place (is bringing our own coffee to a park frugal enough? :-) or you would be welcome to come over here - likely, my wife + 2 kids would be home.

The Brooklyn group has had two fantastic get togethers, it would be great if others wanted to join us.

I don't know if I even count as Mustachian with my 30K in student loan debt, and I'm in a very different place from you folks as a single kid-free woman in my late 30s, but I'm in Kensington and although I'm nowhere near the point of being able to save, I certainly don't spend much.

Hey pippingeek,

Actually my wife and I are the only ones with kids. The other two MMM forum members who attended are with a long term partner, but no kids - not sure you're SO out of place. If you're interested in joining our next meetup, send a private message to me, C, and moustachecat so we have your email.

BTW, we live very close to kensington.

West Village.

I'd love to hear about events in the city.

As my friend in college once said "You can live cheaper in New York City than any other place in the world." I agree. It's not expensive to live here. Well, you can spend as much as you like, but you don't have to.

I'm up in Westchester but would be happy to join in future NYC/Brooklyn events.

I need to send you guys to my brother.  He lives in Brooklyn and needs serious help with his stash (or lack of).   Maybe I can set something up on the DL.

I try to send him articles but he makes fun of me for being cheap.  I sent MMM's last blog article and he responded with this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70eU840lc38 (beware of bad language)

Worth watching this series when you have a chance - best TV series of all time.

Hello fellow mustachians!
I've just landed a job in Brooklyn, which I will start around September 1st. Looking forward to meeting you all when I get there! Meanwhile, I was wondering if I could ask for some advice on BK neighborhoods to consider when apartment hunting? I'm hoping for something in the $1300-1500 range. I'm not up for roommates any more but would consider a studio. Suggestions would be much appreciated - I won't be earning a huge salary by NYC standards so the rents make me wince!

Hey naners, I'd suggest looking at Sunset Park or Bay Ridge; you'll find plenty of options in that range. There will be fewer options in Carroll Gardens and Park Slope, but I have friends who have found (with lots of digging, some luck, and many broker's fees) junior one bedrooms under $1,500.

However, I'd also really urge you to reconsider living with roommates. It's so, so, so much more cost efficient; you'll pay less in rent, utilities, Internet, etc. I don't know if this is part of your thinking, but there is zero stigma about being an adult and living with roommates in NYC.

+1

My wife & I own our apartment, and had a roommate until our first child was born - at which time, she chose to move out. :-)

Thanks guys. I lived with roommates all through my 20's, so not worried about the stigma, but I do feel like I've done my time (and the last roommate situation was atrocious). But I'll give it some more thought!

Hey NY-ers, crazy idea but ERE NY-ers are having a meet up April 14th it looks like.  Would anyone here be interested in suggesting a joint MMM-ERE meet up?  It could be an acronym-stravaganza!

Not sure if anyone is still following this old thread, but there's talk of an NYC meetup here:
