Need your opinion on my investment strategy!
« on: July 18, 2014, 04:47:10 PM »
Here it goes:
I am 34 y.o., unmarried, no kids. Plan to retire no later than 40.

Investments:
401k - $183K (max out every year)
HSA - around $5K balance, but I do max out contributions as well
Vanguard - $182K (all in VTSAX)
Condo – worth about $200K (no mortgage)

I am wondering if I should do anything different with my investments. What I have above is simple, and I love that, but want to make sure I am not missing anything. I looked into IRAs, but my MAGI is too high to qualify for a deduction. Pretty much the only thing I could come up with is get married and have kids, so the taxes are lower :)

What do you think?

you are in a good spot right now.

if you want to be more agressive and take more risk, consider getting a mortgage on your house, taking the cash and investing it in shares (or investment property) to receive higher returns than the cost of the mortgage.

I would never, ever take out a loan and place it in a buy and hold portfolio of stocks. That's just asking for trouble.

The safest time to do that is after a very large drop in the market (say 30 percent plus drawdown) but even then I'd probably be too scared to do it. What if it turned out to be an 80 percent drawdown like the great depression?

Roth IRA depending on your income. Backdoor Roth IRA if it is too high for a Roth IRA.

This doesn't really show much of your strategy... It just shows what accounts you are using, which everyone should be using those accounts.

I failed to mention that I have a $100K HELOC that I am not using for anything. Thought about an investment property, but haven't made any moves.
I would not invest in any stock portfolio that has to be actively managed, just not my cup of tea.

What is your 401k invested in?

65% S&P500 Index fund, 30% balanced fund, 5% company stock

This doesn't really show much of your strategy... It just shows what accounts you are using, which everyone should be using those accounts.

"Allocation" would have been a better choice of words.

Thanks matchewed, I researched both, I qualify for Roth, and I am going to do it!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
