Title: where would you put 5 grand
Post by: ACyclist on November 10, 2017, 11:01:44 AM
I have 5 grand sitting in my Roth, in cash.  I sold an REIT, because I was seeing pressure in that market segment.  It pulled back, so I am happy with my choice to sell.  I have been reading stuff on this site and want to avoid stock cherry picking, due to concentration and warnings on this site to not do that.

I was considering purchasing VTSMX, but the market is so high.  I am a nervous Nellie.  AHHH!

Help me, new friends.  What would you do?

I can't even touch my Roth for another ten years.

See http://awealthofcommonsense.com/2014/02/worlds-worst-market-timer/.

Then pick one of the Vanguard LifeStrategy Funds (https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Vanguard_LifeStrategy_Funds) or similar and check back in ~10 years.

Thank you.  I am checking those out.  They look more on the conservative side.  That I do like.

I'd flip a coin - if heads, low-fee S&P 500 index fund. If tails, low-fee total stock market index fund.

Over the long term there will always be a higher market.  The best time to jump into the market is yesterday. The second best time is today.

depending how big the stash is maybe VWO if i were thinking the US looked a bit pricey.

I pulled some out of the USA a couple of weeks ago and set it to work in emerging markets .

I'm drip feeding into europe ex UK.
In the next year or two I want to get back into the FTSE 250 in the UK but the fall out from brexit hasn't shook things up enough yet so I want to hear more squealing, negativity and the GBP dropping before i go back into that, for the moment EM's & EU look more attractive for growth & currency appreciation relative to me in the UK for the next few years so thats where i'm adding .

I do have about 70% of the stash in a traditional medium risk passive portfolio, the changes above are the first i've done in about 2 years with funds i "actively" manage .

If I had a buck for every thread asking "I know I shouldn't market time, but should I market time?"  I'd be FIREd by now.

The correct answer is a low-fee index fund, such as VTSMX.

You need a defined asset allocation plan. Then you should follow it.
