Title: Where to start with investing
Post by: sixkids on January 15, 2017, 09:51:20 AM
I've got minimal available to invest, say $1,000 for right now that I can send soemewjere and add some every month. This site recommends a vanguard total stock fund. Is that a good one?  It's got a $3,000 minimum though and I'm not there yet. ISAA has some funds that I can start with $50, but I'm just not sure what I need to look for. It's more than a little confusing. If I've only got $1,000 at risk, I'm not too concerned, but I don't want to build it up only to find that I could have done much better ten years down the road with a couple hundred thousand in there, you know?
Is there a cliffs notes site I should look at, or is this just a hope and pray thing?
I've just submitted paper at work to start contributing 6% to my 401k with a target retirement fund of 2030.  6% will get me the max company match of 3.5%

You can put it in vti at vanguard. It's the etf version of vtsmx. Free trades. Also if that's all you have you should do a full case study. And show everything  ESP your 401k options.
