Vanguard 401(k) Question
« on: January 21, 2017, 03:06:09 AM »
My employer recently switched to Vanguard for our 401(k) program. The money has been there for a couple of months now, but I noticed one of the informational tabs on the "dashboard" page you are presented with after logging in still hasn't been populated with any data. The "Review my performance" tab has a "Balance over time" section that has been blank since I have been able to access the page. It says "No performance data is available at this time. Please check back later."

For anyone else that has Vanguard for your 401(k), when did this section actually become populated? I would think after a couple of months of contributions, there would be enough data to populate that section.

Nemesis.

Is vanguard actually managing your 401(k) or are their funds just available?
Have you actually selected funds or is the money just in a sweep fund?

Vanguard manages the 401(k).  If you have a 401(k) with them, it's a separate log in page than what you would use for a taxable or IRA account, but it is still Vanguard's website.

Edited for clarity.

Vanguard's running your 401k!? Lucky you. And you must have a great company or HR department.

Unfortunately, I don't think the peeps here are going to give you the 100% answer here. I definitely recommend picking up the phone and giving Vanguard a ring. They are super helpful and will be the ones to know.

Stoked to hear you are checking on this stuff. Shows you're really in it!

We totally lucked out on the switch. I was super pumped when HR told us they were planning on moving the plan from Principal to Vanguard. Principal's funds were way more expensive. Their S&P 500 fund had an expense ration of 0.30%. Our new plan with Vanguard offers VINIX for the S&P 500 and it only charges 0.04%. You also see the dividend payment and how many additional shares you bought with Vanguard. When we were with Principal, I never saw any dividend payments.

I just figured I would check here. I know I have seen other people post here about their 401(k) plans that are managed by Vanguard, so I thought somebody here might know. I'll probably just go bug Vanguard. Maybe it's broken and I found a bug with their site :D

Thanks Ryland! I check all my financial accounts once a day. I find that checking everything daily helps keep me on track. I don't spend as frivolously if I have a clear idea of what my money is doing or where it is going. I essentially ignored my finances for years and wasn't making any progress. Once I made them a priority, and looked at them objectively, I finally made progress.
