Where to invest Roth IRA Brokerage
« on: March 31, 2023, 05:56:03 PM »
Recently moved money around and I have 453.83 in my Roth IRA Brokerage. The majority of my holdings is in a Traditional IRA Brokerage. Not sure what to do with the $453.83. Any ideas until I have enough in there for a VTSAX buy in? Thank you!

You could buy ~2.22 shares of VTI.

Do you have an actual brokerage account or some type of employer supplied Roth?  If an actual brokerage you are not limited to VTSAX.

Just search for any Total market or S&P 500 ETF and pick the one with the lowest share price so you can buy the most shares with the $453.83 since most brokers won't let you buy fractional shares of ETFs.

It's not giving me many options. They all have a larger buy in.

VBTLX   Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VBTLX)   $3,000
VTSAX   Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX)   $3,000
VFIAX   Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX)   $3,000
VTIVX   Vanguard Target Retirement 2045 Fund (VTIVX)   $1,000
VTINX   Vanguard Target Retirement Income Fund (VTINX)   $1,000

Please clarify what "it" is.  E.g., what brokerage are you using (common ones are Fidelity, Schwab, Vanguard, etc.)?  What type of screen are you on (e.g., mutual funds only, or all possible investment options, or...)?

Vanguard
Roth IRA Brokerage
Instead of "Buy Vanguard Funds" (or similar wording that does not include "ETF") try selecting "Trade Vanguard ETFs" (or similar wording that includes "ETF").  That may help the suggestions about VTI make more sense.

Under the total amount in your Roth IRA should be the world "transact" with some dots next to it.  Click the dots, and the 4th menu option is "Trade Vanguard ETFs (and non-Vanguard ETFs)" - select that.

VTI (same as VTSAX)
BND (same as VBTLX)

On Google rather than Vanguard's site, you can search for "vanguard total bond ETF" to find BND.

Search or get a quote for the ticker SPTM.  That is the S&P 1500 Composite Stock Market ETF and comparable to the Vanguard Total Market fund and it's current share price is $50.43 so you can use more of your available dollars than if you bought VTI which is $204.10 per share if you are going to add small amounts in the future.

That used to be the case, but one may buy partial shares of VTI now.

Wouldn't that depend on what broker the OP is using?  I'm at TDA and AFAIK I can't buy fractional ETF shares other than for dividend reinvestment.

Yes, it depends.

The link posted in the quote goes to a Vanguard site, and that is where 2023Dreaming has the subject account:
