Post by: bthewalls on August 15, 2020, 05:22:22 PM
Curious to see what returns most are getting Annually?

For those that dabble beyond indexes especially

I use a pretty rough method of tracking my average returns since 2008, so this isn’t exact. As of July 2019 it was around 8%, as of July of this year that had dropped down to a little over 7%.

Back in 2014 my average was 13% per year and in 2016 it was 6%. So, the average can bounce around quite a bit based on one year’s volatility.

Edit: I only use indexes, but my split between stocks/conservative investments has changed over the years. I also shifted a pretty decent chunk into European/emerging markets indexes several years ago.

I use fun indexes so I bounce like crazy.  It is not for the faint of heart.

My favorite is giving me an average of 34% and giving me YTD 45% right now.

For the last few years I've had a range of -9% for the year to 80%.

My worst year was back in the early 2000s where I made -80%, that was fun.  Stupid tech bubble :).

The past 5 years I have averaged about 40% return per year, which shockingly is not as good as someone who bought into Tesla or Apple.

Is that return on your entire portfolio?  Not just the funny play money?  Geez I’d love to just get 10% a year for the next 10 years and I’d sell the rental property now. Rentals are the only way I can consistently average ~15% ROI.

My vanguard portfolio is around 6 to 8 percent for the last 10 years...

That is pretty much the return on our entire portfolio the past 5 years, which have been really good years.   We have the bulk of our money in index funds but I trade several hundred thousand and have generated outrageous returns (260% in 2017) I guess due to sheer dumb luck.   In the really funny play money Robinhood account (which I have a thread on here) I have made 1250% in the past two years, starting with $2500 and currently at $34,200.   That one is just for fun, and the money is earmarked for something silly like a trip to Antarctica if I meet the 10 year goal of $250,000 (10,000% gain).

I ave an 80/20 allocation (stocks vs bonds) in vanguard index funds with a 10% annualized return since starting in 2009.

I think Tesla has done super well.  I got the yield off of shorter term plays like biotech, which can rocket 200% overnight.  But look at Tesla, it is going bonkers today.

This is the first year that I am tracking individual performance. I was in a target retirement date fund with my new employer that included 10% bonds. After the COVID-19 stock market crash, I didn't want to be in 10% bonds during the recovery, so I switched to 100% equities.

My first deposit into my retirement account with my new employer was September 10, 2019. I'm up 28.67% in that account. I also bought 100 shares of Southwest Airlines (LUV) at the bottom (23.05) in the middle of May 2020.

Combined, my return is 33.37% over the past 11.5 months. It looks like the S & P 500 is up 14% during the same time. The LUV stock was my first individual stock purchase in about 10 years and I nailed it. I probably won't do it again. However, I do modify my asset allocation in my retirement account 3-4 times/year and I will probably continue to do that.

I retired 3 years ago.  I am 90% individual stocks.  I haven't owned an ETF or metal fund in over 13 years.  My 13 Year CAGR is currently 23%.

YTD: 26.93%
1Yr: 39.4%

I posted some information almost three years ago and I was yelled at, told I was arrogant, told me I would revert to the mean etc...

Not very supportive, but not unexpected on this website.

I'm currently 14 years ahead of plan since I retired 3 years ago.

I'm very blessed and I guess lucky from what others tell me.

Surely these large returns have to revert Back  to average 7 to 10 % at some point....how over priced are the mains stocks really? I.e. larger sp500 companies....

Well, Tesla is trading for PE1000.   Mildly overpriced maybe.

I have no idea. Every year I’m wealthier than the previous one, so I must be doing something right, even though that is very little.

Yeah, I don't track this. Why bother? If the market's down, c'est la vie. If it's up, c'est la vie.

I have better things to do.

Because of Zoom today I’m up 100% for the year in my trading account, and 80% in my retirement accounts. I think I did 80% in 2019, down 40% in 2018 (yikes), and up 110% in 2017. Every year before that was me learning and experimenting.
