Title: What investments did you buy today?
Post by: Ottawa on May 22, 2015, 12:29:42 PM
We typically go shopping, every other Friday, for Exchange Traded Funds!  I thought people might want somewhere to share what they buy and maybe a little about why etc.

Today I decided to buy:

22 May 2015 - 150 shares of ZRE at $19.99 each (REITs).  These are for the TFSA account.  Our REIT allotment is 5% of portfolio.
2 June 2015 - (a few dividend scraps to clean up...so...) 3 XEF, 5 ZRE, 2 VSC

I'll update this post as more ETFs are purchased.

Acronyms

TFSA = Tax Free Savings Account
ZRE = Canada Reit ETF
XEF = EAFE ETF
VSC = Short Bond ETF

Portfolio Allocation & Percentages

Today I finished the last steps of simplifying our portfolio. We are going to be holding US REITs in my IRAs and Emerging Markets in my wife's IRAs. The rest of our investments are held in our work retirement plans. Yesterday I took care of 3 out of 4 IRAs. Today I am buying about $4700 worth of VGSIX (Vanguard REIT Index Fund Investor Shares).

My wife's 401k contribution should also hit her account today. So we'll also be buying VTSAX (Total US Stock), VIMAX (Mid-Cap Index), VSMAX (Small-Cap Index), and VWILX (International Growth).

Yesterday I noticed about $100 sitting in cash in the taxable Schwab account.  The market was down, so I picked up that amount of SWPPX, their S&P 500 index fund.  If I don't check, cash has a habit of building up in these accounts, even with most dividends automatically reinvested.

I purchased the 3ETF's reccomended by canadiancouchpotato.com VAB, VCN (Canadian stocks), VXC (International including US, except Canada) .... Right now I am hesitating on wether I should allocate 5% towards Reit (XRE) or if it's simply useless.

This Friday I will go shopping (auto investment plan).  I am going to take some "C", "I", and "S" fund shares off the shelf and put it in my cart.  (I am in the Government TSP). I'll take my wife's IRA to the market and pick up some SWTSX (Schwab Total Market).  Then I will take my taxable vanguard account for a spin to the "mall" and grab me some more VTI.  I love shopping! SPEND SPEND SPEND...Errr.. I mean INVEST INVEST INVEST.

Nothing.  Like most days.  About 1 trade a week is a lot to me even when you are using an active management strategy.

Multiple purchases per week need not connote trading...Our IPS calls for the continued investment of cash when available. ;)

$50 invested into my Betterment account today and bought 10 different ETFs: VTI, VTV, VOE, VBR, VEA, VWO, MUB, LQD, BNDX, VWOB. My wife and I each have a monthly spending/shopping budget and I started investing some of mine at Betterment.

100 shares of CU - their proclivity to regularly raise their dividend, plus the recent pull back in share price was enough to make me dip my toe in.

100 shares of MFC - future higher interest rate environment should give the share price a boost - and yes, pays a decent dividend.

No accident that these are both Canadian companies - as a Canuck myself, I really appreciate the favourable tax treatment of Canadian dividends in my taxable account. My U.S. holdings reside in my RRSP accounts, as they should... :)

You know nothing, Jon Snow! ;) You are north of the wall, for sure, seeing as Boston is Winterfell! Carry on.
