VSGAX or VINIX - help me decide for 401k
« on: October 04, 2019, 02:07:07 PM »
Hello

I have the following being offered [mentioning just Vanguards]
VANGUARD BALANCED INDEX []
VANGUARD GROWTH INDEX [VIGAX/6.39/0.05]
VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX [VINIX/9.84/0.04%]
VANGUARD MID CAP INDEX []
VANGUARD REIT INDEX []
VANGUARD SHORT TERM INV.-GRADE []
VANGUARD SMALL CAP GROWTH INDX [VSGAX/13.48/0.07]
VANGUARD SMALL CAP INDEX []

I have added [ticker symbol/returns since inception/expense ratios] above.

I still have 10+ years to retire and my age is 39. May be FI in next 10-12 years.

Can you please suggest me where to put my money? It looks like VSGAX is very good with 13.48 return since inception and good 0.07 (although more than the rest.)

What do you want your asset allocation to be?

You can make a total market index:
80% Intitutional Index
10% mid cap
10% small cap

If you were wanting to add some bonds, the balance index is approx 60/40.

I was thinking more on the lines of MMM and just invest in one index fund.

But I am confused which one to pic, wish I has VTSAX as the choice

If you want one fund that's pretty much much the same as VTSAX go with VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX. If you want to approximate VTSAX with the options you have go with 80% VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX, 5% VANGUARD MID CAP INDEX, 15% VANGUARD SMALL CAP INDEX. As you can see, VTSAX is about 80% VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX, so that's why going 100% VANGUARD INSTITUTIONAL INDEX will still be very close to VTSAX. Just stick it in the Institutional index then.

If you want to replicate VTSAX then do what I stated above.
