Vanguard question, I helped my husband transfer his USAA IRA to Vanguard. The transfer is complete but it is still invested in the USAA Target 2050 Mutual Fund, apparently Vanguard has the ability to allow us to continue investing in this fund. But that's not what I want, I want to split the current investment into a ratio of several low fee index funds. I can't seem to figure out how to do this. Do I need to sell the shares to the settlement fund first?

Sorry I can't help with the tax implications, but congrats on moving away from USAA. They are great for insurance, but their investments are expensive! When my wife opened her IRA with Vanguard it was a little tricky figuring out how to accomplish the allocation we wanted on the site, but a couple phone calls to them cleared up all our questions. I would encourage you to give Vanguard a call; what we couldn't figure out after some time on the internet only took a five minute phone call. I would imagine it will take a couple days for them to sell the mutual fund shares, move the money to your brokerage account, and then buy into the new funds.

I'd recommend calling Vanguard and speaking with a professional. I've found they've never steered me in the wrong direction (i.e. tax wise or trying to market their products to me).

On your rollover form, there should have been a box to check to sell existing securities before the transfer. Anyways, you can certainly sell the mutual fund at Vanguard, but they will charge you a fee I imagine.

Thanks guys. My husband and called and they confirmed, just need to sell the shares first!

Yep sell first. I moved from USAA to Vanguard a couple years ago. Glad I did. USAA is great for insurance, but not investments.
