investing book recommendations
« on: February 08, 2015, 11:54:27 AM »
Hi all,

My husband and I are somewhat new mustachians, and are currently formulating our plan for FI in the next 10 years.  Our current financial plan involves throwing as much money at my 6.5% interest student loans (about 50% of our take home pay) until they are gone (about 1 year left!!) After that, we're going to start putting that same amount of money (around $3,000/month) into investments.  We do have a 401 K worth about $150,000 and a mortgage we are also paying off.

Our investment plan before used to be "put it into the 401 K and see what happens." Right now we're actually not contributing to 401 K at all, as we're putting every extra dime into paying off the loans.

I don't know anything about investing money, and think if I was better educated, I would be able to choose more wisely.  It's hard to participate in these discussions on MMM forum without some baseline knowledge.  I've gotten GREAT advise on these forums in the past, and would like some book recommendations on where to start educating myself so I can make good investment decisions when we do start investing our money again, so we can be on our way to FI!

BTW, I have looked at the book recommendations on the blog, but there are so many there it is overwhelming.  Not sure which ones fit my needs right now.

Thanks!!!

If you get a match from your employer, make sure you contribute enough to get it. Not doing that is just letting free money slip away.

You should read this book...The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing

I just finished reading this book myself.  I feel like it's given me a really good handle on investing basics.  Very much recommended!

I actually really disliked The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing. I thought it was a dumbed down version of A Random Walk Down Wall Street, which is absolutely the first book a beginner should read, as I explain on my blog.

And I mean dumbed down as in totally unnecessarily dumbed down. A Random Walk Down Wall Street is already written in clear non-jargon and is meant for someone with no background. The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing literally adds nothing to this but takes away a lot of the nuance.
