Title: Unit trusts
Post by: catan on October 24, 2016, 08:40:55 PM
Newbie at investing here and am seeking some advice re investments.

Last year, per advice of a financial advisor re long term investing, I invested extra cash of about US$26K into two unit trusts. I had no idea where to start or what questions to ask. The subscription fees were 1.75% and 2.25%, pay monthly dividends of about US$45 each. The management fee is 1.0%pa and 1.25% pa. These investments are in HKD in Hong Kong.

I'm moving to the US within a few months so have been revisiting my finances and investments. I've been learning about Vanguard and low-cost index funds and have opened an account with Vanguard. I am wondering whether I should sell the above unit trusts, convert the currency to USD, and invest in Vanguard instead? If I sold now it would be at a small loss market value is about $24K now, and there is also a 1% switching fee. Now I understand these fees are high. Should I sell now? Wait? Any insight would be appreciated.
