Traditional IRA options
« on: January 24, 2016, 04:00:49 PM »
My first post.  I apologize if this has been covered but after a search of the forums I haven't found anything that covers this question specifically.

Basically I started a traditional IRA about 9 months ago...before finding this site and forums.

I opened the IRA on the roboadvisor WiseBanyan.  Was this foolish?  Should I have gone with a Vanguard Index fund like VTI?      If so, would it be an easy or difficult process to transfer to Vanguard?

Thanks for your help.  I love reading this site and forum!

Congrats! To answer your question, you cannot get any cheaper than VTI. Go for it.

You can easily roll over your IRA to Vanguard. Check out this page:

Whenever you transfer an account, your old firm doesn't want to see you go - they won't be much help.  The transfer needs to start on Vanguard's side, with forms that confirm you have permission to make the transfer.  That said, transferring an IRA is really common and it should go smoothly - call Vanguard's 800 number if the online forms leave you with doubts.
