Title: Trading stock/money between accounts
Post by: unitsinc on November 12, 2013, 06:25:29 AM
Hi all,

I've got a company stock purchase plan that gives me 15% off the price of our company stock up to 8k a year. I always max this because it is essentially free money, but I don't like having such a large chunk of money in one stock.

This account(as well as my 401k) is automatically set up in Fidelity. My question is, is there any way to transfer that stock to Vanguard without having to sell it(and be taxed) and just get it into an index fund?

It is possible to transfer stocks from one institution to another. However, if you want to "get it into an index fund," you're still going to have to sell the stock prior, either via Vanguard or Fidelity. It would probably be much easier to sell the stock via Fidelity and transfer the cash to Vanguard.
