Also look into what they mean by ESG, because there is no single standardized definition.
The vanguard ESG funds exclude companies that:
Produce alcohol, tobacco, adult entertainment, or nuclear power.
Produce civilian firearms, controversial weapons, or conventional weapons.
Do not meet certain diversity criteria.
Operate gambling facilities or produce Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO).
Violate certain standards defined by the Index provider's ESG controversies assessment.
Are involved with fossil fuels such as thermal coal, oil, or gas.
I like promoting diversity, and moving away from coal.
But I don't have any problems with beer, porn, gambling, GMOs, or nuclear power.
I avoid these funds not because of i predict poor returns, but because they don't really line up with what I find to be ethically or socially good.
