OMGWTFBBQ it keeps going up.

I actually increased stock allocation earlier this week, but again not because I thought it was a particularly good time to, but my long term plans have included increasing stock AA because I have two annuitized incomes in my not-too-distant future and have two years in cash.

So glad I sold everything back in 2014!.. When is a good re-entry point?

April 12th 2017 right after The Great Thorstach made this post.

Fear is back, VIX above 15, XIV breaking down. SPY to follow, earnings will be a reality check.

Sacred words from T-------h.

First thing I heard when I woke up this morning at 4am (west coast) was Bob Pisani saying that the VIX was only around 12.  I thought I was hearing angels and finished the prayer, "...earnings with be a reality check.  Amen."

Then I went back to sleep because we all know at 29,000 the Top Is In.

Definitely want to hold off for a bit.  This market has nowhere to go but down.  Way down.  Way down in the hole.

That just made me remember all those radio commercials advertising "End of America 2011" which were just 2 hour, non-fast-forwardable pitches to buy into a newsletter that touted gold.  It was a Porter Stansberry thing.  Talk about wrong, criminally wrong.

I knew a guy who fell for that pitch and also the Stansberry "I will show you how to walk into any bank and walk out with pure, real silver!" gimmick.  The deal was that you went in with like $1000 in cash and asked to have it all converted to rolls of 50 cent pieces.  The deal was that because so few half dollars are circulated regularly there was some possibility that some of the old rolls hanging around had real silver pieces in them from the days before they converted to cheaper metals.

The guy did this and was so excited that he found 4 actual silver half dollars in his rolls.  The problem was he now had $998 dollars in loose change that he needed to either re-deposit or spend.  He hadn't gotten around do doing that and had the money in paper bags in his car, ever meaning to get to the bank on some day that they allowed "piggy bank deposits" which was not every day.

Dumb.  Looking for the scam, looking for the gimmick and "stock market trade secrets" are a sure way to lose your money.

Iíve coin roll hunted before, it is too much work for what you usually find.  One advantage of American currency though is you can see the copper on rim of the coins and a solid silver coin stands out like a sore thumb, it does make it fairly quick to go through the rolls, but itís still a bunch of work re-rolling everything and returning whatís only worth face value.  Iím in Canada and its a bigger pain to coin roll hunt because both the silver and non silver coins look the same from the rim, so you have to go through everything way more thoroughly.  Iíve found its easier to just ask bank branches if they have anything old put aside, and sometimes I get lucky and find a collection thatís already sorted out from the common stuff.

Exactly, and since the guy was driving around with it in his car there was a high likelihood it could get stolen completely which means it is a huge loser move.

It could be a hobby if you were very good at getting the rest of the money back into the bank and closing the loop promptly, but compared to the gain he would have received by getting some VTSAX it is a losing proposition.

I would also bet that the guy never converted the found silver coins into that $10-20 because when you do find a real silver old coin the urge is to keep it.  Either that, or he hadn't gotten around to getting those to the silver merchant quite yet.  Lots of running around for a few bucks.

All told how much did he get paid per hour for all the extra time he spent?  Did he even make minimum wage when you consider the time he spent on dealing with the leftover change?  I bet he could have found some non-gimmicky side hustle that would have paid better less bad.

He was always a guy looking for an angle and I never really trusted him.  Pretty cheap dude, in a bad way.

He would set up a cash box in the work lunch room looking for donations to send his kid to theater camp and try to sell Snapple out of the lunch room fridge to scrape a few nickels from his co-workers.  This was a highly compensated engineer and it was pretty unbecoming.  I can confirm he is not poor, he drove a rebuilt classic car for fun (the 50 cent pieces were on the passenger side front floor board under my feet when we went to lunch one day).  Lunch happened because he liked to do a "this month I pay with a 2:1 coupon at a crummy sandwich shop, next month you take me someplace actually nice" game with his co-workers.

Sigh.  I hope he is happy.  I think some folks like to do that stuff because it makes them feel like they are getting something out of it, even if just a few self-applied ego points for feeling oh, so clever.

Thatís funny, reminds me of a guy I used to work with some years ago.  He was a financial train-wreck, he was maybe 30, had kids with 3 different ex-girlfriends, was always broke and working entry level jobs and had terrible personal and financial habits.  One day he finished up some long rant to me about how hard his life is, and I straight up said to him ďDude, at least your life will never be boringĒ.

But since it always goes up you should really use as much leverage as you can to maximize your returns! Max out any student loans you can take, maybe max out a few 0% interest for the first year credit cards? Aim for at least a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio. Not sure what could go wrong with this plan... https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5934
