‘Run with the bulls.’ Don’t worry about the S&P 500 until it reaches 6,250, says SocGen - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/run-with-the-bulls-dont-worry-about-frothy-markets-until-s-p-500-hits-6-250-says-socgen-f56ef02a?mod=home-page

All I needed was the headline, but they threw in some colorful charts and lots of words too...

Uh oh!   You’d better check the article again!

“A previous version of this article gave an incorrect S&P 500 target level in the headline. The story has been corrected.“

I’m such a retail.  I’ve been waiting all year to reinvest dividends for reasons and of course now I feel urgency to finally pull the trigger because the top is in

I know it’s time in market but I can’t help my subconscious market timing

I'm having the opposite problem (but still a strong case of market timing-itis): Forgot to reinvest some dividends in my individual stocks brokerage account and now I can't make myself pull the trigger with prices continuing to go up.

In taxable account, some folks prefer to have fewer lots to manage or to pull cash from accumulated dividends as-needed vs. having to sell shares if they need to pull funds from the account.

Yeah in theory I use dividend reinvestment to do some rebalancing.  I also was waiting mostly because cash was paying 5% and the market seemed high so… shows what I know!

2 1/2 years into FIRE I'm still a little surprised when I check the S&P 500 and realize the market is actually open and it's not Saturday or after hours.

Reminds me of that tweet from MMM from a while back that went something like “as an early retiree, I don’t always know what day of the week it is, but when I do, I enjoy finding out that it’s Monday”

Oh don't worry I rolled all my old 401k's into a single IRA and that was completed this morning. Even though the roll was all within Fidelity, they sold everything to $1.3m cash and I had to go in an allocate to funds today..

In other words I sold "low" and bought at the very peak!

So today is the very top for years to come!..:)

I was tempted to do something very rash.. like keep the cash and hope the market dropped tomorrow. As that would have been playing with market timing with about 38% of my portfolio I resisted the urge, even though we KNOW the top is in.

It "only" cost me about $6000.. Ouch!

Why they couldn't simply have transferred the same Fidelity assets between the 401k's and the IRA, I have no idea.

Its funny how losing $6k hurts so much but the $140k I gained through taking early retirement packages does not generate the same positive emotion!

Well I went ahead and sold some stocks I was holding on margin and rebought in cash (no taxable account).  In the meantime the price dropped a few cents.  So you could say I’m an excellent market timer.  I think my gain more than makes up for your loss, even though they are in no way comparable numerically.  More in the way of late night feelings

Yup, whats more I didn't actually lose anything.. I just didn't make the $6k with the market rising. Humans are a funny bunch!
