and regarding volatility, you're worried that the time out of the market while the check is traveling will cause you to miss out on gains?
Have you talked to the admin folks with your current company 401k about this? You could ask them to contact your prior plan admin and try to get the rollover done directly that way.

This seems like pretty standard practice in my experience. It's more complicated for them to figure out how to do a direct transfer with every other 401(k) provider than it is to just send you a check, so that's what they'll do. Yeah you could miss out on gains for a couple of weeks, but on the scale of decades it really doesn't matter.

Please tell me you meant "buying high and selling low." :-)

Oh, good idea. I really hadn't thought about rolling it over to my current 401k company; I was just going to roll it over to IRA and Roth IRA accounts I currently have at Vanguard.

Not worried about missing on a few weeks' growth so much as the possibility of accidentally buying low and selling high

What about 'accidentally' getting a favorable result. Are you worried about that too? In the time frame we're talking about, it's a flip of the coin for all intents and purposes. Dunno about you, but my crystal ball is not working right now, so if I were in your shoes I would just get the rollover done, since you know for sure that you'll feel better when it's taken care of.
