Title: Thoughts on upcoming Apple split
Post by: dizzy on July 31, 2020, 03:39:18 PM
Had my eye on Apple for a while now, it makes up a big ol chunk of my boyfriend's portfolio.
I've been super underwhelmed by my value portfolio and considering to redo some things.  Maybe 10-20% to growth and dividend outperformers.  My bf reminded me that while Apple's dividend is small compared to others it's pretty big for a growth stock, which often don't have a dividend at all.

Any resources for making a decision.  Today was bananas, and the stock was overvalued to begin with.  That being said, after every time Apple split before it doubled in a 24-48 months max.  Need will still be high with pandemic shutdown ongoing (schools by me are mostly closed through at least November) Wondering when the time might be to get in.  Love to hear other thoughts.  Before the split?  After?  What pricing do y'all like

Poor people going to dump their stimulus checks into it. Going to go to the moon. People actually working and making too much will stay conservative and get screwed like always. Big transfer of wealth from high earner worker bees to people having fun blowing stimulus on their Robin Hood account. I wish I was layed off so I didn't have to work at a high stress job and get free ride to actually enjoy my life.

Split is meaningless. If you like the company buy the stock. Hold for a long time.

Would you rather have a whole pie or a whole pie cut into 4 pieces? It's the same.

I guess my question was more about timing.  Like if people feel it's going to the moon now, or is, then will pull back, then will go crazy again after the split (for sure I think this will happen, new investors) but whether it's sustained or not.
Of course no one really knows but it helps me to discuss things with others and read a whole lot before any decision.

You are chasing pennies. I am assuming that you want to be an owner of this business for a long time.

You might get a lower price sometime soon, you might not. It's a gamble in the short term. Anyone who tells you they know what's coming short term is making things up. They don't.

The general view on this forum is to not time the market.  If my crystal ball ever starts working, I'll let you know.

Quit your high stress job and get one you like.  It's your choice to work it.  Work in another field.
Most people who are laid off right now are pretty damn stressed.  I know multiple families who have found themselves without heath insurance during a pandemic because COBRA costs are way too high, and they don't qualify to buy on the healthcare exchange.  I don't know the families, but our local foodbank is seeing it's highest ever demands- many many people are struggling to get food onto a table.  I don't think people who are laid off are universally "enjoying life."

Yeah, it would have been nice to get a government check, but I'm glad I wasn't in the position to need it.

Yes, because if anything the poor getting richer is the big problem facing America right now.
