Thoughts on this Vanguard ETF Portfolio?
« on: June 10, 2015, 12:59:25 PM »
Hi guys,

Looking to hold this mix in a combination of roth and taxable. 22 yr old

60% VTI
30% VXUS
10% VNQ

Is it really this simple or am I missing something? My research led me to something like this. I know everybody has different preferences but for someone who just wants to rebalance every once in a while and not do much else, how does this look? The REIT will stay in the roth.

This is all you really need and you can't go wrong with a simple portfolio like this. Some will suggest to add bonds, but personally, I wouldn't. If you do, just add BND and hold in your Roth IRA.

This is one example of a reasonable portfolio.

I see nothing wrong with the asset allocation of this portfolio.

Like GGNoob suggested, you are eliminating bonds altogether which many would suggest to include. Bonds have historically provided a near-negative correlation to equity returns which would theoretically provide you with a lower-risk portfolio with equal returns to that of an all-equity/REITs portfolio.

However, given current market conditions and your investment time horizon, it is reasonable to avoid bond exposure altogether.

Ensure you have the risk tolerance required for this portfolio, as you will experience significant declines during a down market. All of which is to be expected given a long-term goal.

Is there a reason to not just do 100% VTI?

To get more international exposure.

I'm not enamored with international, but 30% or less is reasonable.  Vanguard is recommending up to 40% of stocks in international, but I don't plan to do that.  I also use bonds, but at 22 it isn't necessary.  Overall, good portfolio.
