HSA investing commission
« on: February 05, 2016, 04:40:40 PM »
So through TD Ameritrade the best investing option I found was VTI. this is our first year, so still learning but I initially purchased 4 VTI charged $9.99 commission. (I concluded it cost $9.99/4).

Then 2 weeks later I purchased 3 more and it was the same commission. So if I am charged $9.99 ever time, how many shares is it worth me eating the commission fees?

I have the funds to invest this long term. Employer puts in $375 every quarter and we max the rest.

Thanks

neil

I think you have to manually enroll in commission-free ETFs to avoid the fees.  I don't have HSA Bank, but I have my IRA with TD.

Ted: To enroll in our commission-free ETFs, click "Enroll in commission-free ETFs today!" Read the Terms & Conditions and if you agree, check the box and click "Yes, please enroll me." You are now enrolled in the commission-free ETFs program.

TD Ameritrade will retroactively charge commission if holding periods are not met, which is probably why they make you go through this extra step of enrolling.  You might be able to contact customer service and get a refund.  I would not want to pay $10 to invest ~$350.

This is from 2010 on Bogleheads, but it confirms this should be possible: https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=61361

Yes, you have to manually enroll in the commission-free ETFs. I once forgot to enroll one of my accounts and was charged a commission. I contacted them and told them I thought I was enrolled and they refunded the fees to me.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
