401K rollover dividend timing
« on: December 15, 2014, 02:28:35 PM »
So I retired a couple of weeks ago. (Yay, thanks MMM for the help!) I want to roll over my big-company 401K to an IRA with Schwab (local company) so I can manage it myself.  The current 401K includes dividend-paying mutual funds, with the x dates sometime in the last week of this year. Should I wait for these dates or go ahead and roll over now? I have heard that it doesn't matter, that the share price is adjusted to account for this, but I just don't understand that statement.

It doesn't matter. If the fund is $10 and they pay a $0.50 dividend, then the price will go down to $9.50 and most likely the $0.50 dividend will be reinvested into more shares. In the end there won't be any difference into the value of the account. Just go ahead and roll it over.
