GDP MAP
« on: March 07, 2014, 03:39:31 AM »

A picture is worth a thousand words.
I am not sure if the map below is accurate, but if it is correct, it is amazing how only a handful of cities contribute so much to U.S. GDP.

It's BS. Where's Denver? Atlanta? Wouldn't Silicon Valley be larger? Where's the data source? Tracking t back it's just some reedit or who took some liberties with the data - http://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1y371s/us_gdp_split_in_half_oc_1770x1114/

This is one of those don't trust things from the internet. It can be questioned before offering it for others. :)

I had similar sentiments..hence my disclaimer. But whether it should be offered up for others if I am understanding you right , I don't see any harm in letting people see it and make there own judgments on it.

It's misinformation, and then lending credence to it by commenting on how amazing it is. The equivalent of posting the picture below and saying how amazing it is the guy on the ladder survived.

There may be no harm but there isn't value added either. What are we supposed to discuss? If the central point of the entire discussion is questionable what is the point then? :)

It's a geographical division of the GDP into two arbitrary sets of equal GDP. They could have chosen different cities, or split the country down a vertical line, or whatever, as long as there was 50% of the GDP in each set. Denver, Atlanta and Silicon Valley don't happen to be in the set containing the other major cities, simply because whoever performed the division chose for them not to be.

It's basically just a population density map.

50%+ of Americans live in a very small geographical area. Saying that those areas produce 50% of the GDP is sort of a trivial observation.

The harm is to yourself and your reputation. If someone repeatedly posts low-value content, we quickly learn that it's a waste of time to read their posts, and will start skipping over them. Since you're presumably posting at a message board with the hope that people will read your posts, it might make sense to be a bit more judicious in what you choose to share.

Although one benefit of threads like this is that the responses can also reveal the opposite: who are the insightful critical-thinkers who are worth paying more attention to? Unfortunately in this case I was already well-aware that matchewed and KingCoin are two of the forum's most-valuable assets, but relative-newbie warfreak2 gained some esteem-points in my mental catalog.

The interesting thing is that digging back to that reddit thread, the guy who made the map seems well-aware that it's pretty worthless, and it just got way more upvotes than it deserved for some reason.

One of my ongoing assumptions is that everybody has read every xkcd.

Actually, while doing the Google search to find that xkcd, I came upon a discussion of this exact map.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
