Title: State 401k Investment Fund
Post by: tophdna on October 19, 2016, 09:36:45 AM
I am currently investing in a deferred compensation plan through my state (i'm a government employee). The plan is Blackrock LifePath Index 2050 fund. It's a typical target retirement index fund.

My question is, through Vanguard their target retirement index funds have a ticker that I can look up on the market. How come this BlackRock path target retirement index fund does not have a ticker? I have to go to the state's website to see how it is performing.

When I search for "Blackrock LifePath Index 2050" I get one fund symbol on morningstar's site, and one reference from a financial news website.  There's the "K fund" and "investor class", but I don't know if either one is the one used by your government retirement fund.  Might check if "LIPKX" has the same performance as the fund in your retirement plan.

Sometimes large retirement funds can obtain access to special lower-cost versions of funds that are not publicly traded mutual funds, so they don't have a ticker symbol. My own employer uses Vanguard's Target Retirement "Trust" funds, which have a much lower expense ratio, but you have to go to Vanguard's site to look up the price.
