Speculative stocks - Do ya?
« on: April 22, 2015, 08:20:01 AM »
In addition to our 401k's and soon to be Vanguard IRA's, I have a some $$ (a small enough amount that if I lost it all it would not be an issue) in an eTrade account I opened many years ago that I use to buy speculative stocks - to try to score a 10 bagger ;).  It keeps me interested in the market which helps to keep me on top of our finances.  Does anyone else dabble in speculative stocks for fun, has anyone made a huge score with a speculative stock?  A good trade I made in the last year was GLUU.  I am currently in Zynga, Sprint and Micron.

I love to, by small values. It's more entertainment money than investing. Though I turned $500 into $2000 on GMCR. I have a few startups I'm watching now I might go for.

I buy thousands of small stocks every couple weeks to speculate in through VB and VBR. They've done really well for me overall.

I do but I don't risk more than 1% of my portfolio. If the stock moves against me, I sell out. If it goes it my favor, I'll move my stop to break even. If it continues to go up, I'll buy more but never risk more than what I've already made in the stock. I'll keep buying as long as I'm making money. When the stock stops moving up, I'll sell out. So I initially risk very little but eventually could own a big chunk if it does well enough.

Yes, have a few hundred in speculating. Wouldn't go above 1% NW but the gambling is fun (until I get burned.)

Of course.. its is fun. It's better than the casino.

I have a 1% theory. That is if you buy 1% speculative stock and it actually ten bags then it will be 10% of your portfolio. However if it takes it in the shorts and you lose half value you can pull out and lose only 0.5% of your portfolio.

My rule. I only get to do 1% a year period. No losing 50% of my ten bag fund and then buying another 1%

I also buy more of what you might consider speculative stocks.. but they aren't likely ten bag candidates. They are much safer.

I do it every day. It is my side gig.  Hopefully, it will become a full time gig that I actually love to do and spend most of spare time on.  This will be my job after FIRE.
