Post by: directionseeker on March 31, 2013, 06:58:35 AM
Hi Singaporeans,

I found some information about index fund (actually they are called Exchange Traded Fund) based in Singapore. Below are the link:

SPDRŽ Straits Times Index ETF : http://www.spdrs.com.sg/etf/fund/fund_detail_STTF.html

Nikko AM Singapore STI ETF: http://www.nikkoam.com.sg/nikko-am-singapore-sti-etf/fundprofile

I also found a blog post written by Mr Tan Kin Lian talking about his recommendation to people to invest in index fund. You can read that post at http://tankinlian.blogspot.sg/2012/10/invest-in-sti-etf.html.

Hope this information can helps you guys!

Hi directionseeker! I remember reading a long time ago that a majority of the Singaporean population is invested in the stock market. Are index funds/ETFs really popular over there or do people prefer to invest in other vehicles?

Hi,

I don't have the actual number to back me up but I think what you read is almost correct. People around me either invest in stock or buying regular fund through financial planner here.

I also just came to realize there is an investment vehicle called index fund after I read MMM blog. How about you people in Philippine? What kind of investment you interested and invested in?

Haha, I discovered index funds/ETFs through MMM too.  They haven't launched locally yet, but hopefully within the year (http://www.philstar.com/business/2013/03/31/925157/etf-rules-get-partial-nod-sec). When that happens, and I verify that the management fees are cheaper, I'll stop my UITF (unit investment trust fund) investments and start on an ETF or two.

Investing isn't really popular locally, due to a mix of factors (longterm economic stress, educational limitations, investment scams, etc).  So we have something like 500,000 participants, out of a population of 100 million (http://business.inquirer.net/66811/more-filipinos-drawn-to-stock-market). 0.5%. Although with the current stock market boom (something like 20+ successive all time highs in 2013 alone), people are finally starting to pay serious attention to investing.

The Philippines also recently got upgraded to investment grade for the first time in history. (http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?section=TopStory&title=Philippines-secures-investment-grade-rating-from-Fitch&id=67879) That was just last week.

So I'm optimistic, but we definitely have a long way to go before catching up to SG.

There is Vanguard branch here in Singapore but they only serve corporate client so normal people like us is out.

Currently I am still paying off my student loan and I hope I can start my investment by end of this year.

Philippine sounds like a good opportunity, pioneer normally gains the most. Anyway, good luck!
