Uniquestockgifts - anyone familiar?
« on: May 17, 2021, 06:03:09 PM »
When my son was born my coworkers pitched in and bought him a Disney share with a framed replica stock certificate that has his name on it.

I received the replica and instructions that I am registered as the custodian with Disney. I assume if he wants to sell it some day that it is a nightmare and expensive to do. In the mean time I will get a 1099 and checks for dividends along with shareholder info directly from Disney?

Anyone know how this works? Is this transferable to a brokerage somehow?

It looks like Disney's support website is here: https://disney.computershare.com/ What makes you want to move the shares?  I think having a visual reminder of the investment to hang on the wall is a fun idea.  I would think cashing the dividends with your son to spend would be a cool way to physically introduce him to investing and inspire him to save.  Nebulous concepts of we own part of a company don't always stick, but getting a quarterly ice cream with dividends might.  I've considered something similar for my nieces an nephews, wanting to introduce them to investing w/o having to awkwardly ask family for social security numbers to open an account and all that.

I found this on the above site:

How do I move my shares held at Computershare to my brokerage account?

Contact your broker and request your shares be sent to them through the Depository Trust Company's Direct Registration Profile System. You will need to supply your broker with a copy of your latest account statement or advice along with the following information:

Computershare's DTC number: 7807
Your Computershare holder account number (this is listed on your statement or advice and begins with the letter 'C').
Registration (name and address) of your Computershare account (this is also listed on your statement or advice).
The Social Security Number (SSN) or Tax-Payer Identification Number (TIN) associated with your shareholder account.
The number of Disney shares you wish to move from your Computershare account to your brokerage account.

Thanks Yachi!

The certificate is awesome, and I look forward to the day that he asks me what it is. The dividends will be cool too, I like the idea of him cashing it and using it for a treat.

I don't really need to move or sell it for any reason, just wondering if a brokerage would charge a crazy fee to move the share. Would be too bad if it costs $$ to sell a $$$ share.

All in all it is a great gift that will hopefully spark some good conversations later.

It is strange the company does not address this issue in their FAQs. It’s the first thing a gift recipient will ask, after “is this a real share or a decoration?”

In any case, it’s encouragement to hold long term, like people did when transactions were all paper based.

Huh, I was wondering if this was going to be about the stock gift cards that folks on South Korea are apparently exchanging on dates catching on here in the USA. No idea how prevalent this actually is, always a risk when reading US journalism about the different and strange sounding customs of other countries.
