Title: Roth IRA & Retirement... could use suggestions.
Post by: Diotima245 on July 31, 2019, 04:59:29 AM
So my ROTH IRA has been neglected for around 4 years as I had no income coming in after separating from the military. I'm trying to get it back on track and now that I'm working again I can think about investing in retirement.

Apart from my 401k as I said I have a 401k. I've begun liquidizing most of the "safe" or fixed income growth funds I had as it was anemic growth. Here is where I'm leaning towards let me know if this looks good? Before that some background on me. I am 37 years old, single, no student loans... I used the Post 9/11 GI bill after separating at 32 to obtain a engineering degree. I have steady income coming in now finally. That said I need to think about retirement because my current employer does not offer a pension plan. So I'll have roughly $50k~ once all my sell orders go through. My savings is sitting at around $90k~. My yearly income before taxes is $72k.

I really just want growth at this point.. does this plan look decent?

I have a very similar asset allocation (50% VTSAX / 25% VTIAX / 15% VBTLX / 10% VGSLX), which is roughly following the Rick Ferri Core Four portfolio (https://portfoliocharts.com/portfolio/rick-ferri-core-four/).

One thing I will say is that you don't need to be overly controlling of your asset allocation on a per account basis. You only need to care about the overall picture: how your Roth IRA + 401k + any other accounts combined makes up your portfolio.

I'm glad. I'm also dumping a Dodge & Cox and distributing that in the same ratio I elaborated in original post. I have around $7800 in Annally Capital (NLV) but it is sitting at ($1800)~ in the hole... but the dividends are nice I guess? I'm thinking of holding onto it... I invested in all this random stuff out of sheer ignorance.
