Rollover 401k into something. Need options.
« on: February 28, 2017, 07:18:45 AM »
My wife, who is currently a stay at home mom, has a 401k from her former employer in a Principal account. What are my options for rolling this over into a Vanguard account and which one(s) should I choose? We aren't actively contributing to the account right now. Thanks!

A traditional IRA rollover would continue to defer taxes on the money. Simply call Vanguard and tell them you have a 401k you want to roll into a traditional IRA, and they'll get you going.

I like the option of choosing the Vanguard target retirement fund that ties to your planned retirement year...

For what that's worth...

Regarding the movement of the money, I think you want to do a direct transfer. (I'd ask Vanguard how to do that... but here's a link to a page that'll start your learning: https://personal.vanguard.com/us/help/FAQRetirementIRAContent.jsp#j )
