Nobody else in our lifetimes has made investing so easy for the average person. I'll take the market average all day long thanks to Jack. May there be many more who follow his ethics.

That's a really good write up.  I had no idea about all of the heart trouble.  Making it to 89 after multiple heart attacks and 3 pacemakers is crazy!  What a guy!

SEC should close the market tomorrow. I just finished his last book, “Stay the Course”. He was still working so hard for the individual investor.

He's the reason I'm FIRE'd.  And I'd be a lot richer still if I'd gone whole hog on Index Funds rather than farting around with regular stocks.  Even when those stocks included Berkshire, Google, Apple, etc.

What a truly awesome guy in the corrupt world of finance. He saved Americans hundreds of billions of dollars, truly a man of the people. He deserves the American Medal of Freedom for what he has saved investors. Glad he maintained his great mind and wit through all his years, he was still putting out prolific articles as recently as last month.

Truly a great man, an intelligent man, but most of all a kind and compassionate man to care so much about so many. I am so grateful for his efforts in helping us common folk.

He was a great man and helped so many people achieve financial success and security. I read that he he gave half his salary to charity.

I'm not one to worship others. But I find Bogle's humility in his investing philosophy, which has been inspiring to many, to be admirable. Especially in an age where many love to brag on one's own "investments" and the culture of Wall St.

For Mr. Bogle to even shift Wall St and other brokerages towards indexing, he's done a massive service for many. Thanks John!

I feel like we just lost a modern day Robin Hood - he redistributed so much wealth while facing a lifetime of challenges, in his career and also from a health perspective. What a legend.

Bogleheads is back up with a 14 page thread on the topic.

Sad day....  I know I should not be surprised but not one person that I work with even knows who he is (was).  I mentioned his passing to several people and just got weird looks.

Iím not too surprised by that. Most people, even if they invest through their 401k, donít actually pay attention to the details of what they are buying let alone the person who created the type of fund they are using. Itís insane how people will throw money at an investment without actually understanding it. I guess itís better that they are investing rather than not saving for the future. The problem with that is being ignorant makes them easy targets for fund companies and money ďmanagersĒ who will funnel their money into high fee funds.

I was sad to see Bogle pass, but he had a good run. I appreciated his clear and concise thinking on investing. He really helped me cut through a lot of the bullshit that most financial services companies push. I also appreciated his sense of humor, his humility, his sense of enough, and everything he did to improve the chances of success for small investors and the average joe trying to save for retirement. I think he left the world a better place than he found it.

I believe one of my favorite quotes about him was, "Bogle could have made billions, instead he made a difference."
