Question Re: Moving 401k funds

Hi All,

My DH just let me look at his company 401k plan.  It is horrible, ALL of the funds are Goldman Sachs and have ridiculous fees.  He has a rollover account at Vanguard from an old employer plan, is it possible to move funds periodically from his current employer 401k to his Vanguard account?  Or can that only be done on an inactive 401k? 

The good news is that he has only been in that plan for 3 years, so its not a huge amount of money and they do matching, but I am not sure of the percent.  The lowest fee I can find is 1.53%, so I am looking at putting most of the money in that one and reducing that exposure in the Vanguard account.

Some employers let you do an in-service rollover. My wife's 401k seems to allow this for $95. It's not worth it for her since the funds are cheap and the only expensive fees are a fix amount each quarter. But something like this would be worth it in your case. Check with the employer and see if it's an option.
