Questions:

1) Why is a borrower using an online platform instead of the local bank? Why won't the bank lend them money?

Answer to #1:  Almost always equity related, they put less into the deal and are willing to pay a higher rate.  Second answer:  The local lending market doesn't trust the investor's reputation, so he/she turns to strangers.
