Roth 403(b) rollover to Roth IRA - Silly Question
« on: December 29, 2016, 06:05:02 PM »
This may be a silly question but bear with me, as I rarely see information regarding roth 403(b)s

My SO has a small amount ($5000ish) stashed in a Roth 403(b) with Fidelity that was saved with a former employer.  Since then, we have been maxing her Roth IRA through Vanguard each year (in addition to savings in traditional 403(b)s).   For ease of keeping track of things, I was considering rolling over the Roth 403(b) to her Roth IRA.  Is there any reason not to do this?  The Fidelity expense ratios are reasonable (though not as competitive as Vangard for comparable index funds).  Am I missing any obvious advantage to letting that money sit with Fidelity for the next few decades?

Both Fidelity and Vanguard have great fund options (low expense index funds).  Fidelity is slightly more challenging since they have a mix of lower and higher cost mutual funds available.  Consolidating lets you reach admiral class shares a bit earlier (lower expense) at Vanguard, and keeps things easier to see.  A bigger risk with the $5,000 is that it just gets forgotten.

For Roth accounts, the only reason to keep it in the old account would be if the Fidelity 403(b) gives access to institutional class index funds, with a lower expense ratio than you can get in an IRA. However for $5,000 the amount of potential savings here would be minimal and there's value in simplifying things by consolidating accounts where possible.

That is what I figured.  I like the simplicity of consolidation (and not worrying about forgetting about it in the future).  The institutional class target retirement funds at Fidelity are super cheap, but the three-fund portfolio I would be forming in Vanguard in Admiral share flavor would still be cheaper.

Looks like consolidation it is.  Thanks for the advice!
