Opening an IRA before Jan 1, 2014
« on: December 21, 2013, 09:11:11 AM »
I'm helping a friend open an IRA. I know she can make contributions for 2013 until Tax day '14. However, does she need to open and establish the IRA before the end of the calendar year?

Thanks!

I just spoke with my CPA about this yesterday and was told that the account (IRA) may be opened in 2014, before April 15. Does not have to be done in 2013.

I believe you are correct. You can begin contributions for 2014 on January 1st. However, it's my understanding you can also continue to make contributions for 2013 until Tax day in April '14.That is, of course, if you haven't yet maxed out for 2013.

RK is right. There's just a window where you're now able to put in money for your 2014 Roth, and still able to contribute to the 2013 Roth.

Yep, this is what I did this year (put $5000 in my 2012 roth IRA in I think Feb of 2013).
