Opened account with Vanguard - transferring money
« on: September 29, 2016, 03:12:56 PM »
Based on the suggestions in my other thread, I decided to open a brokerage account with Vanguard and want to transfer most of the cash into that account. Significant portion of my funds are currently at Citibank which has a limit of USD 2,000 per day to transfer money out of their account. If I increase the amount, Citi wants to charge me some wire transfer fees, which I do not really want to pay. What are my options to transfer a large amount, for example, USD 250,000 at once to Vanguard? If I instruct Vanguard to debt my Citi account, does Vanguard charge any fees for incoming funds? Tried calling their customer service, but couldn't get through :(

Vanguard does not charge fees for incoming funds.

Vanguard can probably ACH pull that amount from your Citi account if you give them your TRN and account numbers.  You'll probably want to call Citi and ask if they would accept or reject that ACH pull request.  My guess is that they would accept it, and if they decline it there should not be a charge, but you should double check.

Another option is to mail Vanguard an old fashioned paper check.  You can overnight a check to them via Fedex or UPS; the instructions are on the Vanguard website or in the Vanguard new account form that you fill out.

Thanks. I was really surprised that Citi has such a low limit. I will try ACH pull and will see what happens. I do not really want to pay unnecessary fees for such a simple transaction.
