Title: New Fidelity Full View
Post by: dragoncar on August 21, 2018, 03:55:25 PM
So I just logged into my Fidelity Full View ... it's kinda like Mint/PC but I've been using it for like a decade so it has (had) a LOT of my data and I never switched to anything else.

Well I guess Fidelity has acquired Emoney Advisors and they revamped the Full View.  But it wants me to relink ALL of my accounts.  This is like 50 accounts.  And it's slow as hell and not working.

Has anyone finished this process?  Is it worth it?  Was your old data saved?  I might as well switch to something like Personal Capital if it's going to be a pain in the ass

Ok, I completed linking the accounts since the site started running faster.

DO NOT LIKE

Sure, it's all web 2.0 now (not like that's super slick these days), but it lost most of the functionality I wanted.  I don't even like the slick animations and scaled fonts that fill my screen.  I prefer information dense.

1)  All my old transactions were deleted.  Huh, it would have been nice for them to give me a heads up this was happening so I could export it to run reports.

2)  You can still run certain reports, but only on "all accounts" or "one account" -- you used to be able to put different accounts into categories and run the reports on categories

3)  No option to exclude an account from net worth.  For example, I don't like to use home value-loan value in my net worth, but use a separate "home equity" account to keep things more sane.  Not an option any more.

4)  Holdings summary and reports are kinda shitty.

I don't recommend messing with this.  I'll probably switch to a competitor.

My account didn't make it from the old Full View to the new Full View for some reason.  I kinda liked the old Full View, but maybe the new one isn't ready for prime time.

It's not that it's terrible, per se, it's just I have no reason to use it over Personal Capital or Mint.  It doesn't do anything better and all my old data was deleted.  My wife uses PC and I like the app for mobile checking, which I still don't think this has.

One thing I DO LIKE is integration with Interactive Brokers.  Previously, and at Personal Capital, I had to manually update the account each time because I had to enter a secure code in response to a challenge.  Interactive Brokers has the best security of any retail brokerage I've seen.

But IB does had the ability to provide permanent access tokens, and Fidelity now has support for that.  Which is nice, but I still think I'll end up using PC more often.  I just set up PC and it took literally 3 minutes, whereas Fidelity took like 30.  This is most likely due to the background fetch capability at PC (it doesn't wait to fully import each account after I enter my credentials, it lets me keep doing stuff while it verifies everything in the background).  Fidelity was painful because, not only did account verification halt forward progress, the fetch itself was extremely slow.

I know there's not much interest in this thread, but I'll just leave it for posterity.  Call it my own personal review of this feature in case anyone googles it in the future.

I've been with Fidelity forever and it's my main brokerage.  I had no idea what full view is.  I think I'm sort of getting what it is, but have no use for it.  I have my own spread sheet for my investments.  Under my control.  Nobody screws with it.  It's on flash drives, so there's no stored data on my machine.

There are a number of services like it, basically aggregates all the data from all your accounts.  Kinda like an online-only version of the old Quicken or Microsoft Money.  In fact, before I used full view I did use Microsoft money and have that data on my hard drive going back another ten years.

I do have all my old statements saved, so the data is there.  However, it was nice to be able to search for a 10+ year old transaction.  I could do things like “how much did I spend at Costco each year from 2006-2018?” And basically just search for Costco over all accounts and all time periods, export to CSV and run the numbers with a little excel magic.  This also worked for like “how much did I spend on home improvement” but I didn’t do that because I never kept my data very clean.  If fidelity classified bed bag and beyond as home improvement I didn’t correct it because I didn’t want to spend hours each month massaging data.

At this point I’ll just use it to track my net worth without having to enter everything manually into excel

I personally never liked "full view" and never could get it to work.  YMMV

I don’t tend to like things I can’t get to work either

For the record, I will say that Fidelity Full View officially Blows Goats.  For one, it doesn't remember the old Full View.  That should have been an easy import.   Then there was a problem with 3rd party cookies.  Then it doesn't have a real estate function (which the prior version had), and finally some accounts it was unable to import properly.

This thing is not ready for prime time.  Sayonara.

I hear ya.

But it does have a real estate function.  It's there in the "organizer" tab, where you can "add property" -> real estate.  It doesn't have Zillow, which the last one had, but who cares since you'd be insane to accept zillow's value

I'm glad I found this thread before I bothered re-adding all my accounts.  I really only used FV to get Fidelity to do the asset-class breakout across the 10 or so accounts I had in there.  I would then export that into my spreadsheet, which was a nice workflow (gruntwork automated, but still customizable at the end).  Guess I will have to find another solution.

Zillow (actually Smartzip) would at least show you the trends, which was the main thing I was interested in.  But yeah, it wasn't a total deal breaker.  The inability to properly access non-Fidelity accounts, is however.
