If I rolled a 401k into an ira, can I make more ira contributions to that account or should I open a different account to keep them separate?

You can still make your $5500 to that account. They're both in your name, right?

Yes sorry. All in my name. I can start adding to an existing ira even if it's a rollover then? Didn't know if it had to be kept separate just because it was originally a 401k

Nope, you can add to it in exactly the same way that you could add to an entirely new IRA if you opened one tomorrow.
