Need help with my XIRR
« on: May 18, 2015, 06:34:59 AM »
I thought I understood this excel function but over and over again I cannot get it to report a meaningful value. I'm attaching a spreadsheet with my attempt.

It has an initial value of my investment at 1/1/15, a bunch of buys, and the final value today. I know that there is a ROI there, but it keeps coming up zero. Maybe I'm missing something with the negatives and positives?

I've attached the spreadsheet - if anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated.

Put your initial amount as negative, as though you were buying that much on that day. So in your amounts column, you'll have

($36,537.90)
($200.00)
...
$50,093.04

When I opened the csv file, the negative values were in column E, and the dates in column B, so do this:

=XIRR(E3:E89,B3:B89)

I got a result of 9.773%.
