Title: Need 401K Advice
Post by: altrautman on February 15, 2017, 10:24:15 AM
Hey everyone.  So I'm needing some advice on what to do with my 401K and another investment account that I have.  First, I have a 401K from my old job that is managed through Ubiquity.com.  I am now self-employed, and I'm thinking about rolling that 401K into a Vanguard IRA and/or purchasing some VTSMX.  My question is, what is the best way to do this and how do I do it?  I'm pretty green when it comes to investing.  I also have some money in a personal investment account with Wealthfront.  I have it set up so they manage everything for me, but I'm wondering if this money would work better for me if I put it in an index fund too?  Any advice is appreciated!

What is the 401k invested in right now?

Ideally you should spends a few months reading about investing and write an IPS that fits your particular needs. If that's not something you want to do, then just throwing everything into VTSMX is fine as long as you don't jump ship when you hear about some hot new investment. High fees and jumping in and out of investments half cocked are the worst things you can do for long term investing.

Vanguard also has nice simple target date funds that balance international, domestic stocks and bonds based on estimated time to retirement. Might be a good holding place while you decide if you want more control or further diversification.

Or you can build a similar portfolio yourself with just 3 indexes. That way you can control the ratios if you want more control. It only takes a few extra clicks to add in the two additional indexes.
