What to do with savings account
« on: July 26, 2016, 06:44:46 AM »
So, I have too much money in my savings account(s). $70k. Why so much? I just got married about 2 months ago and we both have been saving for a while. Both have decent investment accounts. But both had fairly sizable emergency funds. Easy, put it in a vanguard ETF. Whichever is the one that tracks the whole market more or less.

Ok, but I would like to have 6 months maximal expenses around in case somehow my wife and I both lose our job. So, $18k there.

Still not an interesting question. But, we want to buy a house within 3 years. So now the question is, do I risk it in the market with such a short time period? Short term CD? Loan shark it?

So yeah. What do the mustachians think?

Well, how much are you planning to put down for the house? If you and/or your wife lose your jobs, are you comfortable putting off buying the house for a little while longer or is it a "must buy now" kind of situation? How long will it take you to save another $70K?

(Oh and for what it's worth I'm keeping my "down payment money" in a Vanguard bond fund.)

Looking to put down 20%, so between $40k and $60k depending on the area we end up in.

--Semi-unrelated info. I'm the trailing spouse even though I make 4x what she does. I can work remotely or get a new high paying job in about 10 days whenever and her career is extremely important to her but low paying. So we will be moving in 2 years more than likely to an upgraded job for her.

Good point on how long it would take to put together another 70k. Probably a year to 18 months now that we both have good jobs and reliable transport. I actually hadn't thought about that. Seems like a better idea to invest this now.

yeah, I'd invest all but your emergency amount (18k) and build up your down payment again over the next 2-3 years.
