Schwab's ETF portfolio tool
« on: March 09, 2014, 02:20:53 PM »
Does anyone use Schwab's ETF portfolio tool? You enter an amount, how aggressive you want to be, and it recommends no commission low fee funds.  for example, I selected 10k, Aggressive, and it recommended

4957 in SCHX
1976 in SCHA
490 in SCHE
1993 in SCHF

Is there anything wrong with these types of ETFs and investing this way?

No, that looks totally reasonable! Just to restate that in plain language, what it's suggesting is an allocation like:

50% US large-cap equity
20% US small-cap equity
20% foreign developed markets equity
5% emerging markets equity

That's a decent strategy. (The details of asset allocation are really just that---details. The important thing is that you're saving lots of money and investing it in diversified index funds!)

If you want more information on asset allocation, you should check out this Bogleheads page: http://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Asset_allocation (There are some example portfolios toward the bottom.)
